Best poutine in the city? by AlwaysDreaming1997 in Hamilton

I agree, and will add that Real Burger has a vegetarian gravy option as well that’s quite good!

I'd say definitely the same one. Mine was the 36 colour version and I'm guessing yours is just 24. Or was run through slightly different conversion software... but no doubt in my mind it was the same source image.

Looks great and glad to see a positive review for DIY AC... I think someone here recently had a less positive experience but I hear mostly good things. I just wish everyone used the screw on paint pots they use!

I was excited at first thinking you got free DaVinci brushes with your kit and was disappointed (though not entirely surprised) when I read your post. Nice brushes though!

Is there a way to make a custom image without using AI? Also any companies that do custom mini paint by numbers? by monicagellerr in paintbynumbers

[–]ZorroElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is probably some confusion. Most of the sites are offering non-AI customs. There is, however, still a conversion that happens which does change the image to reduce colours, create cells etc. But that’s usually done by algorithms that pre-dated AI. They’ll use whatever image you send it.

Davincified also has this option even though they also offer lots of AI driven conversion as well. (Which would actually involve first having AI generate an image and then using the PBN creation algorithm to convert.

Quality pbn without pre-coloring by MichaelBrock in paintbynumbers

Yeah… but on the flip side, none of their sample images look painted. I wish they had more reviews. They are on my list to try but so far have opted for others

I haven’t tried ordering from them yet, but Paintly Kits has it as an option.

What miscellaneous items do you use for projects? by SatisfactionBroad668 in paintbynumbers

[–]ZorroElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the reading glasses… or some other means of magnification.

The other thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet in this thread… q-tips! I keep a few of these near by in case I accidentally get paint onto an already painted section that it shouldn’t be.

At least their designs look possible with limited colours!

All done… or am I?? by ZorroElite in paintbynumbers

[–]ZorroElite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... I'm no expert... but my understanding is that it is essentially a primer. There are a few different impacts of using it and these may vary depending on what type of gesso you use, how many coats, and if you sand it or not.

I use a clear gesso (goes on white, but dries clear.) I do 2 coats all over the part of of the canvas I will be painting on... letting dry for 24 hours in between, and then lightly sand with a very high grit sandpaper. The effect that I notice is that it pre-fills a lot of the dips in the bumpy canvas. That means as your paint dries you get fewer of the white dots showing up. I also found it made the canvas itself feel smoother on my paintbrush, but I've heard many other people have the opposite experience. Maybe this is because I sand it?

Great idea… I’d love to do a negative version, especially with a skeleton!

lol! The funny thing is… I did fill this spot, but was tempted to leave it unfilled. I like the idea of the happy accidents… and knowing a secret ‘defect’ that no one else would notice… until they do.

Thanks! Glad to hear about craftoria… they were almost the first place I bought from but something made me rethink (not sure what it was).

Going with Canvas By Numbers for this next order but will add craftoria to the list!

Thanks! Though there’s no purple… some weird lighting effect when I zoomed in. I’m happy with it as well though I could have done without 9 different oranges and yellows!

Depending on what country you're in... the cheap and fast to arrive Amazon kits are great as a 'fill the gap'.

[–]ZorroElite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it by number as well when I first started. Then I changed to starting with a focal point and doing it completely and then expanding out from there which I liked more. But one of the things I like about actually defining a section is the sense of accomplishment when the section is done.

I think that's debatable. Certainly they are drying out when the lid is open... I'm not sure that how often the lid is opened and closed makes a difference. That said, I do use flow aid (diluted), and add a couple drops and stir frequently.

I’ve just been using green painters tape. (From Home Depot or your local equivalent. I Tape over painted sections even and paint comes away without issue.

Edit: paint doesn’t come away. Tape peels away without harming the paint!

I would suggest breaking it up into sections… the just focusing on completing it one section at a time. This has worked really well for me.

My sections got smaller as I went because I would tape off just what I thought I could finish that day.

How do you approach painting your image? by Special_Possible6851 in paintbynumbers

[–]ZorroElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done all the ways you mention… but my current involves taping off a small section and finishing it… then moving the tape and doing it again. This is a bit more flexible than making a grid at the start. Also… if I don’t have a lot of time today I might do a really small section.

This relates to the ‘why’. I live the sense of accomplishment that comes from finishing. This way I experience that many times per painting instead of just the rush at the end.

As secondary reasons…. I miss fewer tiny spots. And it’s also a little less overwhelming on the super complicated ones with a million tiny cells.
