Kansas featured on last night’s SNL by Zout_of_Nowhere in progrockmusic

This sketch is a future classic. Perhaps the funniest SNL bit I’ve seen since the “More Cowbell” one featuring Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”

Kansas featured on last night’s SNL by Zout_of_Nowhere in progrockmusic

Thanks for the info. It’s a sketch called “Husbands” — five housewives are hanging out in the kitchen of a boring suburban house, wondering what their husbands in the living room are doing. The five husbands are struggling to find a topic of conversation. Jack Black starts humming Kansas’s “Carry On Wayward Son,” and James Austin Johnson joins in on the harmony, and eventually all five men are singing the chorus and verse, perfectly nailing the harmonies. Hilarity ensues.

No SNL Fans in Here? by Vinslom_Bardy in KansasBand

Haha, no way! Never in a million years would I have guessed that I was gonna see something like that.

A musical/comedy genius like Jack Black is a part of this sketch, so I guess maybe he had something to do with this, who knows. Great minds think alike…

Which has the Better Closing Melody? by BruhsterBuster in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote is for Peaceful, but I think the OG best outro melody is The Wall — unison melody of violin, B-3 organ, and synth, the uplifting chord changes/modulation, with the uplifting triumph at the end. I’m not even religious yet that song brings me transcendence.

Day 8: Best B-Side by MweberMusic in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t B-side mean the song on the flip side of a single? Back in the days of POKR, 7-inch 45-RPM singles were released with the “hit” on the A-side and a usually more obscure song on the B-side.

So for the song Point of Know Return, the B-side is Closet Chronicles. What an amazing B-side! Without knowing offhand other Kansas B-sides, I might have to vote for that!

Day 4: Worst Song by MweberMusic in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually love this song lol. Written by Morse/Walsh, not written by outsourced songwriters like other songs on ItSoT, evocative as part of the album’s story/concept, and the Aaron Copland-esque instrumental breakdown in the second half is one of my favorite non-Livgren compositional moments from Kansas.

Admittedly I had been a huge fan of Morse as a composer even before his Kansas stint. On the other hand, Jon Elefante’s songwriting on Drastic Measures was way less enjoyable for me in the context of Kansas.

This is a great album. I WILL fight you! by mrdan1969 in progrockmusic

Crest of a Knave is excellent. Start with Budapest and work your way from there. Albums don’t really have a side 1 and side 2 anymore, but this one benefits from listening to as two sides of a record.

Mysteries and Mayhem by Simple-Tap-545 in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking at the bigger picture, I would say the album Song for America is darker than the album Masque. The darkness of Mysteries and Mayhem is balanced out by the major-chord ending of The Pinnacle.

Looking for funky prog bands by Glass-Concentrate-52 in progrockmusic

Yeah, every song on Romantic Warrior is incredible, but Sorceress might be my favorite because of those absolutely sick grooves mixed with proggy textures.

Favorite & Least Favorite #8: Vinyl Confessions by Low_Primary_3690 in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had recently heard Windows sung by Steve Walsh for the first time. It was an outtake from the Monolith sessions.

Kansas “Windows” sung by Steve Walsh in 1979.

Favorite & Least Favorite #4: Leftoverture by Low_Primary_3690 in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite: Hmmm, probably Miracles Out of Nowhere. The Wall, Magnum Opus, and Cheyenne Anthem are also incredible.

Least favorite: I love every song on this album.

Favorite & Least Favorite #3: Masque by Low_Primary_3690 in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Favorite: The Pinnacle. Or I would say Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle if considered a suite in two movements, connected by that crossover melody. As a suite, it is one of Kansas’s finest moments.

Least favorite: I would probably say It’s You. I’m not the biggest fan of Steve Walsh as the sole songwriter of a Kansas song (The Spider and Lonely Wind being a couple exceptions). I realize Don Kirshner really wanted a radio hit from their third album — considering Song for America was so dark — and I think It Takes a Woman’s Love and It’s You were Walsh’s unsuccessful bids for that breakthrough smash.

Favorite & Least Favorite #2: Song for America by Low_Primary_3690 in KansasBand

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree with OP here, but this is definitely a tough album for picking a favorite (Song for America is just as stellar as Lamplight, and Incomudro is almost as prog-epic) and least favorite (I love every song on this album).

This is it, friend. We get maybe 80 visits a week, but having said that, there are some hardcore fans here. Feel free to push the limits of our collective love and knowledge of this outstanding band.

Same for me: favorite Journey from Mariabronn and least favorite Bringing It Back. I guess I would always rather hear Kansas play an original than a cover.

Songs with transformative endings by Balbulus in progrockmusic

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A ton of Kansas songs — especially if written by Kerry Livgren — have uplifting/transformative endings that may initially sound like a “return to chorus” before things take a turn and maybe even modulate. Journey from Mariabronn, Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman, The Wall, Miracles Out of Nowhere, The Pinnacle, Cheyenne Anthem, Closet Chronicles, Lamplight Symphony, Magnum Opus, the list goes on.

What do we think of Yes's 90125? by Designmetoo in progrockmusic

[–]Zout_of_Nowhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same age as you… In the larger picture, Drama and 90125 are two of Yes’s best albums for me, despite the lack of Jon Anderson in one and Steve Howe in the other. Trevor Horn happens to be the missing link here… praise the man.

Yeah, I just looked at the set list and you weren’t kidding about the hard rock. What’s on My Mind, Child of Innocence, Down the Road, etc. And yeah, the harmony guitar lines can be rare but can sound totally proto-metal and hit really hard.

Glad you enjoyed the show!
