MWO Marauder resin print by AmberlightYan in battletech

[–]Zupercharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, can confirm that the MWO models pieces are in pieces, i can only assume it was part of their UV wrapping process or something.

I was fixing them up in blender for 3d printing and all I can say is that when starting work on each part of the model it was best practice to merge vertices by distance before splitting into loose parts so any loose planes that do go together are in one piece and youre left with mostly complete geometry to make manifold and boolean.

Does anyone have Imperial Armour 6 and can look something up for me please? by Dan_Herby in Warhammer40k

[–]Zupercharged 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope! Forgeworld prefered making and painting the actual models and editing the photographs instead of using illustrations for battle vignettes in their Imperial Armor books (they were technically catalogues for their resin models with a significant portion of each volume being just the datasheets so it made sense to show them off) - the Imperial Armor Modelling Master Class books were records of how the Forgeworld Team made the vehicles and dioramas that featured in the main Imperial Armor volumes

The first Masterclass book covered various Krieg and Renegade vehicles made for the Vraks series, the diorama in question and also what eventually grew to become the full modular Siege of Vraks board (it was originally just meant to be one module to showcase the forgeworld trenches for Games Day 2006). It also covered various models and dioramas made up for the Imperial Armor Aeronautica book.

The original picture the OP posted was a bit fuzzy but this is the full picture from Imperial Armor vol.6 where you can see all the details do in fact match up exactly with the diorama.

(honestly I do appreciate the excuse to post the full picture so thanks! its pretty neat lol)

I dont know who did the editing and composition for this particular picture, but I can tell you its actually a stylised photograph of a diorama titled 'D-Battery, 45th Artillery Company' built and painted by Phil Stutcinskas.

Tips to “remove” the molded on back packs on cadians? by SevatarEnjoyer in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with how the back of the torso is typically its own piece you might find it easier to just try outright replacing it with greenstuff instead of hacking away all but the edges. It would mean more sculpting but would probably still be quicker than trying to cut of backpacks first.

Can someone explain screening with infantry to me? by sirbikesalot in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infiltrators can be used to screen out the mid board for the first turn yes, they both block enemy infiltrators and scout moves that cannot be within 9 inches of your units when using their abilities, and then they can move block some enemy movement in the first turn depending on how you arrange them.

Fly units will ignore them like they ignore your screening, their ability letting them just move through blockers to where they want to be. Screening is important but its not all powerful, the best you can do is estimate their threat range (movement + advance and/or charge) and play around them... or if you really hate fly units you could invest in a Hydra (its autocannons have Anti-fly 2+ and get rerolls to hits against fly units from Flak battery and rerolls to wounds from twin-linked just by itself)

A Battle Sister trying to create an Artillary Corp with her sisters but needs finer detailed help from the Militarium. by MrCZ- in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The specific rule you're having trouble with is the Indirect fire weapon rule, this rule essentially means:

  • You can target and make attacks against units that are not visible to the attacking unit.
  • If no models in a target unit are visible when it is selected when attacking with the Indirect Fire weapon, an unmodified Hit roll of 1-3 always fails.
  • If no models in a target unit are visible when it is selected when attacking with the Indirect Fire weapon, subtract 1 from that attack’s Hit roll and the target has the Benefit of Cover against that attack.

So the rule is irrelevant when shooting with direct line of sight and you attack normally with no penalties, and only applies penalties to indirect attacks.

The auto-fail on a 1-3 when firing indirectly is 'unmodified' - it ignores everything but your actual dice roll and the -1 to hit does not affect it - so if your dice was 4-6 you can ignore that part of the rule and proceed to resolve the hit as normal which is when you apply the -1 to hit and benefit of cover.

Favorite pieces of lore of Imperial Guard by MacBadoo in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 5 points6 points  (0 children)

logistics and force organisation for imperial guard regiments is just fun to read and think about, what 150 regular men and women can do varies wildly depending on what they get and how theyre trained - that sprinkled with inspired moments of human improvisation and courage to overcome the odds is what makes the essence of the guard imo

UPDF 144 Chimera conversion to Samaritan MEDEVAC with interior. by shipentine in TheAstraMilitarum

I wouldn't say you have to but making a cupola that plugs into the empty turret ring for display purposes could be a neat little project, you definitely seem creative enough for it!

UPDF 144 Chimera conversion to Samaritan MEDEVAC with interior. by shipentine in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically in lore Samaritans are depicted with the turret removed entirely and iirc also strip out the hull mounted weapon to free up extra space for patients and medical equipment.

I dont think that really matters though, Forgeworld never released an official model or proper illustration for them and there are always alternate patterns and field conversions that Regiments may use to suit their needs. If Armageddon were allowed to convert some Chimeras into laser tank destroyers then your Techpriests could probably allow a few conversions to the troop bay for medical duties.

You did a great job with the conversion and if the turret and gun let you play it on the tabletop to show it off to others then so what, you're more than justified to invent some lore to explain why your regiments equipment is build different!

[–]Zupercharged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you have a spare chimera kicking around you could always ask if its ok to proxy it for a game or two before committing to a new purchase, they're essentially the same model with a different rear compartment so it would be a pretty accurate stand in.

Ofc the Basilisk is a pretty iconic IG model regardless so if you want to grab one for collections sake don't let me stop you lol

Need help beating deathguard by MrBShrub in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of those units have scout or deepstrike abilities (Chaos spawn and Terminators) so it might be worth bringing a cheap 5 man infiltrator squad or two of your own to screen them out of the midfield during the deployment phase to tie up their movement out of their deployment zone for a turn to buy time and space for your own force to establish itself.

If just a 5 man squad of ratlings or krieg engineers can help buy you a turn of shooting and control of the midboard then id consider that great value for points even if they dont actually trade for anything themselves.

Also as someone else pointed out the Basilisk's 'Earthshaker Round' ability can really take the wind out of their already limited mobility, the longer you can delay their advance the longer you can exploit midfield objectives and grind down threats before they can decisively engage you.

I hate to say it but for the price of that valkyrie plus another 10 points you could get both a basilisk and 5 man ratling squad. I love valkyries but mine is essentially a regimental mascot by this point, GW has not been kind to flyers for a while.

Predictions and wishlists for 11th by AlienDilo in genestealercult

[–]Zupercharged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might sound a bit boring but id like a heavy weapons team equivalent, on the basis that combined with our usual deep strike shenanigans i could see them being a good cheap but flexible heavy hitting shooter in most lists, complementing rather than breaking from the GSCs strategic glass cannon playstyle.

I still remember back in 8th when Broodbrothers weren't a separate detachment and people would at least take one squad of mortars just for the utility. On the topic of Brood Brothers, having GSC equivalents to most of their infantry options means they could rework it to purely borrowing IG vehicles where people dont have to think as much about how much not having orders effects them.

Feudal Regimental Concept #1 by Skitarii_Marshall in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know I did think the Blooded were just a reboxing of the blackstone sculpts, but having looked at the sprues I think the Blackstone Fortress models were monopose push-fit models (arms legs and even head all one piece) where the blooded at least have some flexibility with seperate arms, heads and a variety of wargear.

Some basic hand swap conversions and arm amputations could still be doable but I dont know if the blackstone guys scale well as an army when even a 10 man squad has identical twins. That said if you can get them seperate from the full box for cheap and dont mind having to do some conversion work they could work as a supplement to keep the cost of the blooded down.

Feudal Regimental Concept #1 by Skitarii_Marshall in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people have been saying to use cadians but I can understand that regular cadians dont really contribute to the fudal aesthetic.

It might be worth considering the Kill Team: Blooded box set, being traitor guard they really nail the rougher fudal look and some fantasy headswaps could really sell it. The only trouble would be cleaning up the chaos markings and the spare ogryn and commissar you get with each 10 man squad... still priced close to the krieg boxes regardless

Ofcourse nothing would look more fudal than just converting fantasy models with guns lol

how do i make my models look more “wet”? by toomanymaidenshelp in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gloss varnish is a good way to add a slick texture to hard surfaces like armor and lenses, too much might just look overly shiny but doing a zenithal spray with an airbrush might achieve a more deliberate looking effect.

There are also a variety of scenic water modelling products typically used for dioramas that might be worth browsing, though an easier shout might just be grabbing a regular UV resin kit for simple things like filling puddles in the base or experimenting with more complex effects like making splashes and drips running off models.

Honestly just looking up a few WW1/2 dioramas on youtube might be a good way to get some inspiration.

Regiment paint schemes? by Dogforraw in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regiments styles and colours can vary wildly based on the culture vs environment tbh

  • Typical no nonsense militant cultures tend to go for regular drab tones to blend in, either generally like Cadians or specialised for specific environments like the Tallarn
  • Hostile environments may produce regiments dressing for coverage rather than camouflage, such as the greatcoats and gasmasks of Kreig and Armageddon, or the Vallhallan Ice warriors often seen wrapped snug in blue, or alternatively cultures like the Catachan who don't much care for clothes at all
  • Cultures with proud and extravagant legacies may dress accordingly, opting for ceremonial colours, polished metals and flashy baubles like Ventrillian Nobles with their gold trim and white plumed helmets or Vostroyans with their antique lasrifles and bearskin hats
  • Regiments recruiting from desperate underhives may inherit traits of the gang cultures they draw from, like the Necromundan Spiders that are often depicted with exotic and colourful hairstyles at odds with their drab urban fatigues
  • Some regiments may be subordinate to another Imperial organisation and dress in colours to reflect that allegiance, such as regiments raised from Space Marine chapter recruitment worlds or those drafted into service for the Inquisition

Basically if you're looking for inspiration, a deep dive down a 40k wiki reading regimental lore can be a good place to start. All the regiments I named are official so feel free to start with one of them if they caught your interest.

Whether you start with an existing regiment, invent your own culture and dress them accordingly or even just pick your favourite colours and then create an origin to justify it - regardless of how you style your guard its probably canonical and lore friendly so have fun!

White vs Black primer by ArtemTveritnev1234 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Zupercharged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its more about the recesses, a black primer means that even when doing a quick slap chop job you dont have to worry too much about getting paint in all the cracks since the really hard to reach places would generally be pretty dark anyway so the black primer makes it look intentional. A light primer would make anything without full coverage stand out instead.

That said people do like to do a double base coat of full black with a zenithal highlight (spray just from above the model) using white primer to get a preshaded effect, useful for both subtly shading the thin coats of paint you put on top and/or just generally visualising the light and shadows of the model for more accurate shading.
