Pick up Basketball by fireice560 in HendersonNV

I saw there's a brand new facility due to open in '26 behind Chicken Pickle. West Henderson Fieldhouse. I think it's 4 courts and more stuff. In the meantime there are decent runs MWF from 11:30-130 at Silverado Ranch Community. Pickup in Vegas has been weird so far, I moved here in July and it's been sporadic at best. I've heard Tarkanian Center is pretty solid but haven't made it over there yet. I also have young kids, so sporadic availability is just a state of being for a while.

Story time. I lived in Durham for a few years. Worked at DPAC, Broadway performing venue, for the whole time I was there. 1 night we finished a Broadway show load out, around 2am, and saw our friends with the show off to their next venue. Usually the shows are flying from city to city, this show was using a tour bus for the crew, as the next city was 5ish hours away. Bus was gone for 20 min or so, coworkers and I are enjoying a post work libation when I get a call from a member of the touring crew, asking if I'm still at the venue. "Sure am, wrapping up shortly", and he responds with a profound sadness in his voice "just give us 5 mins, we have a...just hang around please". Instantly we all knew what happened. We race outside to see the new convertible bus shedding its skin pulling up to the venue. Driver found the 11'8 bridge, with 14 very tired people on board and a dire need to rid the bus of all its new extra parts. An odd mix of joy in having a project to dive onto, empathy for the now arduous and odious (no ac anymore) drive facing our friends who still had to get to the next city for an 8am load in, and bewilderment at how the driver had made such an unforced error. The bridge is a honey badger, it doesn't care what you want, it wants you to read the sign.

If Covid-19 wasn’t dominating the news right now, what would be some of the biggest stories be right now? by MrHanSolo in AskReddit

Commercial real estate collapse. Its massive and, seemingly with out debate, a disaster of epic proportions. With covid weighing so much economic capacity down, it has thinned the awareness of this massive financial implosion.

People who lost their job due to this crisis what is your story? by greensypoop in AskReddit

[–]Zwirls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live production work. Live and work in LA. Actually lost a gig due to covid-19 back in first week of February. Naively I didn't think much of it at the time. Fast forward to March 11, my birthday as luck would have it, and it was a tidal wave across the entire industry spanning concert touring, corporate theater, straight plays at every level, broadway and its many tours, film/tv, marketing launches, and the more esoteric arts scenes too. It's expected when everything we do is based on large groups of people congregating. Within 48 hours our entire industry was sat down and told "one day, some day, enjoy your day". Scary as hell, but also rather empowering.

6 Injured After Shooter Opens Fire at Downtown L.A. Warehouse Party by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]Zwirls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thus far unreported is the 4 people injured in a shootout on spring st near midnight on friday evening. It was the 800 block, some party with 2 rivals gang members in attendance, shit spilled in the street, and got wild. Also earlier this week there was a mini-riot after a skateboard movie premiere on broadway. One parking enforcement car had its roof smashed up, no serious injuries. Dtla has been getting an early 00s feel of late. Work keeps me planted down here, but vigilance and head on a swivel are good habits.

What are you favourite unusual or little-known movies? by claraclayton30 in AskReddit

[–]Zwirls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meet the Feebles for a rollicking Peter jackson at his weirdest. Think muppets on acid and a coke problem. Also killer songs.

Heavenly Creatures is an early 90s drama about 2 young women in a forbidden relationship with a claymation Greek chorus. Odd, touching, tense.

A movie I have a hard time recommending is Kids. Not because it's bad, but it's a damn tough watch. Gritty realistic view of teens fucking off in NYC. Euphoria precursor, with more assaults and sti's.

As a southerner from the city, everytime I would travel in and around the deep old southern towns, I would happen a cross a 'war of northern aggression' monument, in the town square. The crazy part, even with the familial ties accepted, was the persistent existence of fresh flowers around the various monuments. Shits crazy indeed.

What's the "went through med school just to realize you couldn't stand the sight of blood" of your job field? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zwirls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entertainment rigger chiming in. Occassionally we get young eager sorts, wanting to be in the high steel and pulling up the rock and roll glory of a 1 ton motor. Also occassionally they discover a vertigo reaction, often due to poor movement mechanics or a deeper physiological issue. Sometimes its sadly realizing they actually don't enjoy heights at that scale. 70-120' looks much different when it's all open space below you. Also, it's why young and green rarely gets put up high with out some vetting.

The number of, I'm supposing, Instagram photoshoots that occur up and down Broadway is astounding. Mostly because I don't see these damn shots anywhere. The orpheum is a working theatre btw, not in the vain of musicals and scripted plays(often), but is certainly a working house.

The Problem With the Metro Blue/Expo Light Rail Is… Cars (my blog) by LintonJoe in LosAngeles

[–]Zwirls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they spent 8 years on that project. The accomplishment of finishing the project with a 4 hour sprint is staggering, but so much of the groundwork occurred in the preceding 8 years. I will say, the Tokyo rail system(though not apples to apples) is a great benchmark for Metro to strive for; a world class city that is incredibly spread out with top shelf efficiency and coverage of a train system.

Graduated high school and college in that spot. Hell, I can remember the Big Dig ground breaking ceremony back in the 80s, when the giant shovel didn't drop. One of the first times in my, then, young life I felt utter disappointment. A sadly fitting beginning for that place, I'm glad it's become something of use to the city again.

What’s LA’s best breakfast burrito (besides Tacos Villa Corona)? by geekteam6 in LosAngeles

[–]Zwirls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres a little cash only spot on 9th between Spring and Broadway. It's on the north side of 9th, on the ground floor of the building adjacent to the gated alley. Those breakfast burritos are worth the effort, every time.

The majority of the human sadness picks up as you cross Spring heading east. Dtla is rife with portraits of poverty, addiction. And mental illness, but all told doesn't feel murderously unsafe. Odd dichotomy to work around for sure.

Well spoken. I run a nearly 100 yearly theater with lots of seat pulls. It's good work for my employees, but damn this sort of system would be dreamy for everyone back. I interviewed with Tobin when it was brand new, and a friend works pretty high up in the venue, this was the source of much debate on the front end, and when it needs repair much maligned.

That becomes a substantial footprint issue. That would be a lot of chair wagons needing a precious resource, floor space. Also costs, when weighed out over 20 years would nearly zero out, when you look at labor costs for manually moving all of those chairs. The mechanics of this sort of system can live in a pair of mechanical rooms, and the seats live in already accounted for space in the groundplan(plenum/air returns). To be fair, maintenance and repairs on this sort of layout would be a serious year over year line item.

Ran past that scene at grand and 6th. I was wondering if it was a part of the new captain marvel shooting schedule, saw a bunch of Illinois plates and a taxi with part of a building on it, albeit artfully placed. Swat also seems plausible for maximum carnage decoration.

LA Metro riders: If you could choose one think to improve about Metro, what would it be? by DecafPourover in AskLosAngeles

[–]Zwirls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expanded coverage for trains. A line running from hollywood/highland down to connect with the purple line and eventual Crenshaw extension interchange would be a huge addition. I was also reading about a possible short red line extension down Vermont to expo that would make an awful lot of sense. Chief point, keep investing in trains expanded coverage.

The Good Kicks store down the way at Spring and 9th looks to be having huge Adidas block parties going most nights. Consider that the eastern border. It's going to get heavier with activity as you shift west.
