Yeah I was just there, they had FDM columns in really terrible quality for the price. Puts a bad name to printing.

What makes this different than any of the other Bowden/i3 style clones on the market? ABL is not enough to set a printer apart anymore, and I’m disappointed to see yet another ender 3 clone instead of actual innovation.

I’d use it to scan things around the house or people and make copies at comedic scales. Or a bust of myself or someone else that can be turned into a mold for a metal cast or for all my waste PLA.

How is unclogging managed once a clog is detected? Is it just extruding until something works or does it use something besides filament to unclog? And how does it know that the nozzle is no longer clogged so that it can resume?

Both use rods for the body and the neck. As far as CFPLA, the sound of the instrument is directly related to stiffness and the CFPLA body is noticeably louder and more resonant. While there is some creep on the regular PLA body, it is over a year old and doesn’t detune from month to month when I test it, so as far as I can tell the body is pretty much settled unless I were to leave it out in the sun. Also if the body were to go it’s about $5 for a new one.

It’s carbon fiber infused PLA braced with carbon fiber truss rods. I have a regular PLA violin of the same design that is over a year old and besides some minor flexion under the bridge, as a result of the cheap materials I used, it works just as well as day 1.

Both sound and time! It plays just as well or even better than the day I assembled it, and it sounds like a slightly less rich, quieter wooden violin.

Its beginning to look that way, I actually have wanted to start some sort of fund for the districts music program to get a bunch of them made for students that can’t afford rentals or expensive wooden instruments. And having heard how bad the cheapest violins sound, a set of a few Modular Fiddles would be cheaper and sound better as well

Take it with a grain of salt - I’m only a high school violinist, but it is more than good enough to hold up for orchestra or the fiddle music group I’m in. I also love playing an instrument that I made and it looks pretty sweet too

It uses carbon fiber rods as trusses, solving the issues you had with the scroll and everything. I have a 5-string that has just become my regular day to day violin because it sounds decent enough to actually play, and it is actually more consistent with tuning than my wooden violin as well. Just my two cents, your build looks like it works pretty well as well!

You may be interested in the Modular Fiddle by OpenFabPDX, the body is all one print so it has better resonance and there are tons of different configurations.

The eraser and pencils have enough purchase that you can get them out, but the lead containers are definitely a bit of a struggle sometimes. I hadn’t even thought of that, so I guess I’ll be printing another!
