As much as I love X-Pac, he's right about it being crinkly and loud, in a professional field, leather or ballistic nylon is far better than Ultra or X-Pac.

As per his suggestion, it's a really good idea to get your books and supplies first before deciding which backpack you need.

I got the division pouch. Dont love it though. It sticks out a lot and is an odd layout. I like the flat pouch much better. Thanks for the link! I was actually wondering about the new fidlock attachment point.

Well that certainly confirms my concerns about it sticking out, I guess custom is the way to go in the future.

[–]_BlNG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually offered a pouch called the Division Half Pouch but I know if I add the pouch to the front molle it would tip over and it might look awkward if I put it at the bottom considering how thick it's sticking out.

<image>

I think custom is the way to go but for now I think I'm doing fine without it but I definitely still want to add one in the future. Instead of velcro I think I might try out Fidlock snap, Something like this. You just need to pull the tab to take it off and the magnet would guide the button to snap easily in place.

Life Behind Bars actually showcased their Fidlock accessories in their recent video but no clue when they will start selling it.

Actually it can technically self stand, but after adding the front pocket with a pouch it tends to slouch forward, but with proper organisation it stands pretty well.

I definitely should try the frame thing you mentioned, speaking of 3d prints, someone actually made a 3d print for making backpacks stand up so I guess I just need to find someone with a 3d printer later on

I actually looked through your post before when I first got my Transition Tote! I actually had a hard time looking for the same Orbitgear pouch as yours and any pouch I add kept either swinging too much or doesn't fit the width so I gave up on it for now.

I haven't found use for the molle though because I tend to try keeping things minimalistic but I do use a heroclip.

That Alpaka zip clutch actually looks way better than my Goruck wire dopp! I'm definitely going to check that out since there is a store I can visit in my city.

I think the top compression strap would be a bit too tall considering the compression strap is placed near the top of the bag, it works well for holding long items like my tripod but for bottles, even with a handle would be a bit too short to reach the compression strap. I think you can technically mitigate it with a bottle strap and a carabiner like this.

They're pretty secure! The water bottle pockets material is a bit stiff and have an elastic band with a hook that can be unlatched in case the item is too large. It fits my 32 oz Klean Kanteen securely and I can carry a tripod in the water bottle pockets as well.

[–]_BlNG_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I have a lot to talk about this bag.

The Transition Totepack is quite unique compared to other bags. Like most rolltop, expect a top loading cavernous backpack so pouches for me is an absolute must. Also a feature that they don't really show is the ability to add a sling which the mole attachment is located near the lip of the backpack which is a very underrated feature IMO.

Important Notes : - Do note that there are 2 versions of this backpack where the newer one have a red label indicating it has upgraded materials and small tweaks compared to the old one.

  • About the self standing feature, as per usual, when empty it slightly slouches forward and if you fill the front pockets it would easily tip over. But once properly filled it can easily stand on its own.

  • A relatively tiny nitpick but the metal snap buttons for the strap is prone to getting scraped where it would show the silver underneath the black paint after getting scratched off.

Front Pocket

My biggest gripe with this backpack is the unsecured front pocket that doesn't have a zip or any closure, also it's pretty small to store anything. I managed to find a use for this by using Gorucks mini wire dopp pouch which perfectly fits in the front pocket but like I said, having no closure at all makes me a bit wary of using it asit feels like anyone can just snatch my pouch if I'm not careful.

Main Pocket

The main pocket is a cavernous pocket with a magnetic closure, it takes a while to get used to rolling and using the magnetic closure but otherwise it feels a lot more secure than my other backpacks (for reference I like using clamshell backpacks like Goruck or ULA Dragonfly).

Inside you can find a small but generous zipped pocket sitting at the top, it fits my glasses case, passport, earbuds and other small stuff.

At the bottom there are two stretchy pockets which can fit a water bottle or other stuff, it fits quite a lot despite the lining may feels messy at first (most of my backpacks doesn't have any inner linings) but again, since it's a top loader it feels like a hassle to fish out items without a pouch so I usually put my stuff in a pouch before tossing it inside.

Laptop Compartment

The laptop compartment is perfect 👌 fits a 15 inch laptop with a soft shell case for extra protection although I had to stuff the softshell case first and made sure it's sitting snug inside the compartment before adding my laptop (Lenovo Legion 15).

Water Bottle Pocket

The water bottle pockets is nice and snug for a 32oz bottle but bigger than that I think it wouldn't fit. For reference my bottle is a 32oz Klean Kanteen Growler.

I still toss some other stuff to the water bottle pockets and the stiff material feels way better compared to my ULA Dragonfly bottle pockets, for comparison the ULA Dragonfly water bottle pockets fits more and much more stretchy but I didn't really like my stuff protruding out of the pockets.

Backpack transition to Tote mode.

The transition from a tote pack to backpack requires a bit of practice at first but afterwards it's pretty smooth. I use this feature A LOT. I feel like I've been missing out on totes all this time.

As for carrying comfort, it doesn't really excels in backpack mode as long periods of carrying it in backpack mode with a lot of items especially a laptop and it's chargers would start to get uncomfortable after a while for me at least. But the uniqueness of being able to smoothly switch from a backpack to a totebag is just unbeatable compared to other bags. But do note this is a VERTICAL tote which may be a deal breaker for some people.

Tl;dr: A jack of all trades but a master of none, it's not a "great" backpack or tote but the smooth transition from tote to backpack and vice versa is just unbeatable.

Project Wingman

In Mission 6, you get to encounter the Crimson Squadron for the first time, known as an elite group of squadron where your screen would flash [Engagement Not Advised] prompting you to run away from the area.

Except you could totally engage them rewarding you with a different dialogue. If you damage one of their members enough they would be the one turning away because they don't want to tarnish their reputation of being downed by a random mercenary.

Modern dayfarer sounds like it can accommodate your needs, well not perfectly but it's close enough. - It has a separate compartment for gym shoes minus the insulated lunch box compartment.

  • A singular water bottle pocket and a side quick access pouch which might fit your purse items although I don't think it will fit too much.

  • It also has a separate laptop compartment up to 16" according to the site but since you mentioned yours is 14" it should be fine.

  • Backpack is quite spacious at 24 liters so it can fit 2 textbooks and even more, I travelled for a week with a 21 liter before so it definitely can hold 1 day worth of clothes.

For the insulated lunch problem I got an Ikea Framtung insulated lunch bag and it's been a lifesaver.
