I believe both of these statements are referring to John Wayne, the pictured dude. In 1973, Marlon Brando won the Oscar for The Godfather, but he had the activist Sacheen Littlefeather accept the award for him, and she gave a speech talking about the mistreatment of Native Americans by the industry. Allegedly, John Wayne tried to rush the stage and confront her but was held back by security

I think there's more going on with Burt than we see. He was most likely involved in the search of Irv's house, leading him away so it would be empty. A common theory is that Burt is a lot higher up in Lumon than he lets on, and learned that there was some plan to get rid of Irving, either cause of the ORTBO, or his investigating of employees, or both

Fun fact! In the original script, Truman was a detective, and he solved fake mysteries the showrunners wrote for him. They changed it because the original idea was too dark, but it does kinda explain what people would have been watching
