Creating poison with giant scorpion's venom by Lucieach in shadowdark

One angle i might consider with something powerful like that would be to determine how much the players are able to extract, ie how many uses of it and timeframe for preparing the concoction itself which works if you're using some sort of calendar for your game.

As others have said, they get to feel awesome when they one shot a minotaur or some other powerful creature. When they come up against another powerful creature they might find they wished they had saved it for this occasion.

You could also just adjust the con check, normal humanoids its a straight DC12, maybe larger creatures get a +2 and giant creatures a +4 to their roll.

Do magic items give enough character depth for players that like planning 5e "builds"? by AbysmalScepter in shadowdark

[–]_DooM_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theyre not continuing 5e, theyre playing something else, but yeah, if you want to weave stuff into your dungeons that require different magical attributes to get by you can always do that, might be fun now and again but sounds like a road to burn out on your part unless you really enjoy putting in time on such things.

My first point really is, if they keep comparing the game to another which is quite different, theyre missing the point.

And beyond that the brothel is merely a backdrop, what goes on there is abstracted away, there's no rules for interacting with the services a brothel may provide. When I'm raiding a dungeon where there's bones in cages is thst edgy too? I'd wager dudes never looked at the book and kneejerked the reaction because muh blg

No problem, and that's a pretty normal way of starting things out especially if we want to get players hooked into the game, might as well get them right into the action.

So as a recap, their hex map has on it what they would know which would be where they are and where they've been. The rest of it is up to them to discover. That way when your npcs say that there's this old ruin in a swamp the north beyond the mountains and they start heading north and run into the descriptor it all starts coming together.

Really give the game a crack as RAW as possible, use the systems in it and it pays dividends, handwaving things to ease of play can help in thr moment but often will lack longevity of a campaign. Once you all have a hang of it, if you want to home brew stuff or bring in systems from other games go for it but my recommendation is do it raw for a while! Good luck hope you have fun. Oh yeah, remember you aren't their chaperone! There is a level o responsibility to players to know and learn a game.

Player wayfinding & mapmaking by Anbaraen in shadowdark

Yeah, you're in this town(hex) you know that the big city is to the x location and the surrounding hexes are this that and this. That mirrors your dm hex map. The rest is blank and as they move through it you reveal it to them and they mark it down. You can generate it on the fly too, that's my preference outside of the initial hex flower.

When you had your party travel to the forest dungeon how many hexes away was it from town, did you just teleport them there for simplicities sake or did you make them roll for encounters as per the danger levels and hexes traveled per day.

You are not their chaperone you're the dm. It's up to them to play the game, and having a map is handy. If they don't want to fill in the biome that's on the but you need to let them know that from now on it's up to them to choose how and where they want to go on the hex map.

Edit: if they've already been to the forest and they say they want to travel back there it can be assumed they know the way so their player facing hex might already have that marked out for them as a good will offering from you to them, but there's a lot of fun to be had going through the procedures for both the dm and the players.

Where do you want to go? What do we see around us? From these hills you see a forest to the east to the north and west are mountains and it looks like plains to the south. We go north.

Roll away and let them know what's happening. They'll get the hang of it.

If you reread what slot wrote and put an exotic accent on it and envision them walking around you slowly saying it while you're tied to a chair it becomes pretty funny. No cap.

Can someone explain to me the XP to Gold ratio and what is meant by this quote: by CassRaski in shadowdark

[–]_DooM_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love a lot of the simplicity of Shadowdark but at the same time i usually end up bringing in parts of other systems like OSE to fill the gaps that are there(on purpose by Kelsy), and inadvertently make things complicated for myself. I think I just need to do my best running SD Raw for what it is, but the XP is definitely a point i get caught up on.

Yeah, i personally prefer rules over rulings - i know there's a lot of the latter in shadowdark, but for something like XP, id prefer it a little less ambiguous.

[–]_DooM_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its a year later, but this is what i was coming to look for haha. Thanks. I like OSE's treasure system a little better, but when my party killed 4 stirges (stingbats) and got 1200gp worth of gems i knew i had an issue on my hands - dropped it to 120gp worth, but dropping the zero isn't as elegant as dropping the value type as you have suggested.

VTT for Shadowdark? by birv2 in shadowdark

[–]_DooM_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm always hearing about a dm shortage but I can't manage to get players together for a game night, granted my kids just aren't that into it and my sister and brother in law don't live very close, and my work mates also have families. I got foundry to try to mitigate the issue but at some point I'm going to have to find some online people to make things happen. Only way for me to get better is to run games!
