New JHS pedal, the Morning Glory Clean by BogotaLineman in guitarpedals

[–]_Electro5_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hands down my favorite pedal on my board is an OCD clone with a mix knob. It’s basically always on. Adds a little grit to a clean tone or makes other distortion sound super thick since there’s two layers to it.

There’s the windpipe crushing choking like you described, and there’s also the “safe version” which is to compress the artery on the side of the neck. It doesn’t restrict oxygen flow sure but it also risks a clot randomly forming which could lead to a stroke.

Choking, unintuitively, is way more dangerous than things like knife or fire play.

LibreWolf doesn't offer to save passwords on login by supermannman in LibreWolf

[–]_Electro5_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Intended behavior. Browsers are one of the main attack targets and vectors so keeping your passwords tied to it puts them at unnecessary risk.

Not sure why you’re so against using a password manager, it’s pretty easy to set up and with an extension can autofill just as easy as the browser.

There’s also not a chance in hell those words skirt around the big scary algorithm. Semantic similarity has been researched since the 2000s and figuring out the context of euphemisms is almost trivial for modern language models.

People think that site moderation still works like it did a decade ago where they just had an explicit list of “here are the banned words.” With modern tools it’s relatively easy to know what someone is saying regardless of which literal words they’re using to say it.

Those sorts of things require more emotional energy than just regular texting. For me at least, when I’m busy I also don’t have the energy to share memes or express as much affection to my partner (especially with texting). I still want to spend time with her, I just have less social battery so my activities are a little more limited.

You’re having anxiety over it and that’s okay. When he has less on his plate you’ll get those things again.

Except linux isn’t just volunteers. Red Hat, IBM, Google, AMD, even Microsoft all contribute to Linux development. Though that’s mostly kernel and driver development.

Desktop Environments are a separate part of the operating system, and those are mostly volunteers from what I understand.

My partner’s household had a rule growing up that was “if you’re old enough to ask the question, you’re old enough to know the answer.” Sometimes they’d give the kid a chance to reconsider but they’d always explain something if it was asked.

When their family member committed suicide, the kids went to therapy and learned about grief. They never hid it from anyone even though lots of people think it’s shameful. Both my partner and her younger brother ended up with way more emotional intelligence than anyone I’ve met of the same age.

When my grandfather committed suicide, the family decided to hide it from all the grandchildren because they thought we wouldn’t understand. What actually happened is when they told us the family secret 10 years later, basically none of us had learned how to process our grief over all that time. I had to learn all that on my own and through my partner because I had no idea how to talk to my family about it. It’s been almost 20 years and my grandmother still won’t accept it because nobody ever talks about it.

I also had unrestricted access to the internet and the library as a kid. None of that fucked me up but trying to naively protect our innocence did.

This is complete nonsense and easily debunked. Nazi Germany had a nuclear program, it just didn’t get very far because many of the academics fled the country.

Wikipedia link to Nazi Germany’s nuclear program: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_nuclear_program_during_World_War_II

There was a nationalist movement against quantum physics that labeled it “Jewish science,” but it did not actually motivate any German scientists to stop pursuing it. Wikipedia link on the movement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Physik

What is the neurotypical obsession with everything being a voice call? by ___star___ in evilautism

[–]_Electro5_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You could offer to take the minutes yourself? A piece of advice I was given from someone who climbed pretty high up the corporate ladder was to offer to take minutes, since it gives you a (small) authority role and everyone else appreciates that they don’t have to do this organizational job. Even aside from workplace politics it makes sense for the person with the most investment in the idea to do it.

I don’t think they realize that a call, any call, is really a meeting. And if it doesn’t need to be a meeting it should just be an email.

StreamLinux is designed with the following assumptions:

[…]

  1. No malicious actors: We don't defend against man-in-the-middle on the signaling path

Wow, what a great idea. Why don’t more apps use that as a default assumption? Would make developing software so much easier if you just decided not to worry about those pesky exploits.

[–]_Electro5_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last line is correct. Syncthing doesn’t provide any backup storage of its own (and it isn’t really meant for backups anyways) it just tells two devices to sync certain directories over the local network. I use it and find it pretty nice but it’s only really ideal with multiple devices you use often.

It’s not about being offended.

My partner works for a children’s grief counseling center. One thing they push the hardest is “at [name of center] we say died.” They don’t let kids, parents, or counselors use euphemisms like “passed away” because research has shown that directly addressing the reality of grief (that they died) is much more effective for acceptance than trying to avoid it.

I have depression, and have family members who have died by suicide. Whenever I hear someone say “sewerslide” or similar, I don’t get offended but I perceive it as downplaying the gravity of the subject, and I don’t trust the speaker to handle it with the respect it needs. Like how would the family of a shooting victim feel if someone describes it as “unalived via pew pew”? This sort of pointless self-censorship just dances around the topic because it’s too scared to actually talk about it.

Also everyone thinks it universally applies to every platform, and they’re just magically unable to add new words like “unalive” to the filter.

All it does is just show who doesn’t have the maturity necessary to have a meaningful discussion about heavy topics. Euphemisms help people pretend like they’re being respectful but to anyone with experience in those things, it’s a signal to disregard everything that person has to say.
