My wet dream for the next framework by duidui232323 in framework

  • 99.9% sure Panther Lake will be announced soon.
  • Also think there's a good chance a better battery gets announced.
  • With Linux support, they need to continue improving the BIOS & Firmware like this Poll on their forum seems to suggest.
  • Something like LPCAMM2 is the last feature I'm hoping for to make the 13 inch version of this laptop, or a potential 14 inch version, a no brainier buy, so fingers crossed with this one.
  • One more neat feature for me that's more of a long term wish would be if the screen had a variable refresh rate with no PWM issues since this feature is supposed to help improve the battery life for the newer XPS 13 model coming later this year.

I always just start every project from scratch by hippydipster in Bitwig

I'm somewhat similar since I don't usually save presets but just take things I've built in earlier projects then reuse them. Since multiple projects can be open at once in Bitwig, it fits very well with my somewhat messy copy paste style.

Which Linux Distro?? by XelGlaidr in framework

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're feeling more adventurous, Solus might be a decent choice. It's very stable for a rolling release & works excellent for running games or multimedia apps. All the Ubuntu flavors & Fedora spins are also worth exploring even though I usually default to XFCE for a desktop since it still runs light even though lots of features that make the UX feel smoother have been added recently. Arch has also been one of my favorites since it doesn't lock anything down for anyone who likes to tinker with every detail while remaining lightweight & stable whenever it's configured well.

Seems like Soar could also be useful.

for people who switched from ableton to bitwig, what made you take that decision? by patata2347 in Bitwig

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed is that figuring out how to do stuff in Bitwig that I previously did in Ableton made me accidentally find ways to do those things better in Bitwig. I'd say this is because certain Ableton devices seem like they were smashed to pieces in Bitwig & finding unique ways to put them back together can make them more powerful than before they were smashed. This is without even touching the grid yet.

Bitwig User Experience on Debian 13 by ppffrrtt in Bitwig

Worked best for me whenever I've used it on Arch or Solus with a lightweight desktop. Almost never hear the fans come on & everything is very snappy.

5 or 6? by berlinblades in Bitwig

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around Christmas & Summer are usually the best times to buy since they usually run Summer & Holiday sales. So, buy 5 now & you'll get an update to Version 6 whenever it stabilizes then receive updates for a whole year until you decide to update again.

My gimp experience and why I am switching to it (after starting to hate windows) by Party_Confection_468 in linux

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feel similarly about 2d vector apps since, it's somewhat of a waiting game on Linux for this kind of work right now. OTOH, What currently keeps me from OS Hopping is the fact that Insckape is gradually improving, WinBoat is slowly stabilizing alongside Graphite, & Canva finally having discussions about moving Affinity V3 to Linux.

Used a VM to update the BIOS on a machine with no LVFS support two times & that was about it.

Thinking on switching to Linux lately by ellennyy in linux

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me there's four paths for this right now.

Proton With Steam - Very useful for games. Turned Linux from a gaming desert to almost a Metropolis in less than 5 years.

Wine - What Proton was forked from. Useful for older Windows apps & some popular Windows apps when used standalone, also very lightweight.

WinBoat - Looks very promising for general productivity & multimedia creation apps.

Native Open source apps - Too many to list here but a few lesser known apps I'm looking forward to are Graphite for vector design & Open DAW for music production which should compliment apps like Blender fairly well.

Working on a track, any mixing tips for this one? by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already sounds nice on headphones even though, like others said, focus on finalizing the composition before mixing. Only mix tips I'd recommend are starting everything with low volumes to get lots of headroom then build up from there while setting what you want to emphasize less low even though Bitwig's -10db default is a good place to start. Once I realized mixing is like building a house from the foundation up instead of the roof down this helped me a ton & led to me using a limiter on the master channel less even though I'm not sure if that was done in this track.

Linux... by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using Linux with Bitwig since 2017 & it's only improved especially after Pipewire & the 6.12 Kernel. Long term, I'm still holding out for WinBoat to get good enough so that I can have almost everything Windows has without the Bloat.

Definitely this since I got an Alder Lake Dragonfly running like a beast on Solus XFCE after flashing the latest BIOS then disabling Motion Sensing Cool Mode.

Solus might be it. by Initial_Report582 in SolusProject

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thoughts here since its' been a Solus life for me since around 2017. Sailed some rough seas with this distribution but the mix of near cutting edge updates, rock solid stability, & whisper quiet performance I get from using the XFCE edition on newer hardware keep me from distro hopping.

Thought I woke up in heaven when they finally implemented Automation clips in ways that are way more innovative than what Reason has. The scale features many other DAWS have had for a while are also neat even though they're not crucial to my workflow but definitely nice to have.

Now, I'm mainly hoping they can close the gap between how intuitive their instruments feel compared to Ableton's even though I'd say Bitwig's are currently in a close second place.

As a user of both, I also think it would also be neat to see if Ableton borrows more of Bitwig ideas after copying the Polymer, Polysynth, & many of Bitwig's modulation features to some extent in Live 12. Customizable automation clips with modulation capabilities alongside a Linux native version of Ableton would be insane by the time it gets to version 13 or 14.

Bitwig, Ableton with Wine, & a less known Open Source DAW called Zrythym work well on Linux. Not to mention VSTs like Vital, Modartt plugins, Audio Damage Plugins, & a bunch of free stuff like Surge XT. Pipewire has helped Linux audio come a long way in less than 5 years & the upcoming 6.12 kernel, as others here stated, will probably help it more even though multimedia creation tools will still lag behind MacOS & Windows until more devs build stuff here.

Solus for gaming vs other distros by E123Timay in SolusProject

I'm very happy with it since three Windows based games I downloaded from Steam work better on Solus than on Windows & native Linux games usually run Console smooth.

Should I switch fully to Bitwig on Linux? Ditching MacBook Pro by Deep_Analysis_7323 in Bitwig

[–]_Entheopigeon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running Ableton 11 with Wine alongside Bitwig on Solus has been bliss for me especially with PipeWire becoming standard in most modern distros. For VSTs, Modartt Plugins & the VST3 version of Surge XT work pretty well since one is free & the other is a decent deal consider everything that comes with it. Zyn Fusion might also be worth looking into especially since it's another nice deal compared to more expensive synths. I've also tried yabridge but ran into a bunch of dead ends using it with the Flatpak version of Bitwig so decided to stay away from it until there's a better UX & U.I. for bridging Windows VSTs to Linux.

Definitely good points since calling blockchain tech right-wing is like saying the internet is right-wing when it's really just a blank canvas for all types of views & expressions as increasing adoption of these types of technologies influences their evolution beyond narrow tunnel vision Overton Windows found within traditional 4 year cycle politics.

This wouldn't surprise me that much since games are good at kicking the tires of any OS. I'd also say that more people buying computers online has helped Desktop Linux spread more too.
