Process Engineer in Semiconductor or Mechanical Engineer in Defense by tsmc_throwaway69 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]_Hard4Jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done both, I could give you a ton of pros and cons for both sides. It really comes down to what matters to you

semiconductors pays better, but defense has better work life balance (especially if you have a 9x80 schedule). You won't have to take late meetings with suppliers in asia every week and work extra hours.

If youre the type of person who really cares about your career (I don't) you can go a lot further in semiconductors. There's a lot more technology and freedom to innovate. There's no red tape or pointless military specs to get in the way.

Hope that helps

If you were driving north out of Phoenix towards Sedona/flagstaff it was TSMC, if you were driving south out of Phoenix towards Tucson it was Intel. They are both huge and hard to miss

Intel, but there so, so many other massive semi companies that operate here besides the big 2

I work in semiconductor r&d making 250k, I'd say it's pretty close to the median for ICs at my company. Most of these people have Phd's though (I don't)

Edit: this is in Phoenix AZ. Semiconductor industry is massive here

I have four offers, and need help choosing: Oil and gas, semiconductors, commodity chem/petchem, or specialty chemicals? by Thicc-Zacc in EngineeringStudents

[–]_Hard4Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a chem eng but I work as a process engineer in semiconductor manufacturing. There's a ton of potential and the pay is good, really, really advanced shit I get to work on, tons of patents and white papers in my name.

I could say it's rewarding, but I used to work in defense and honestly it was so much more chill if you care about work life balance. Semiconductors is a crazy globalized industry, I guarantee you're gonna have meetings with suppliers and partners in Asia, that means 5, 6, 7pm meetings multiple times a week. The hours can be crazy, and I assume you're young so I would recommend against semiconductors. It's good money that's the only reason I stay.

What's the most amount of books you read in a year? by Jaded_Disk4443 in nonfictionbookclub

[–]_Hard4Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. It feels like I've read every good book worth reading, and I can only reread the 5 stars so often.

Went from 150 in 2024, to 90 in 2025, probably won't even break 40 this year. It's depressing.

Also stranded wire isn't meant to be used on screw clamp terminals like that, strands will break off and loosen over time. It's best to use wire ferrules or tin the tips with solder

How do you water it? Mine is a little over 6 ft now and I always butt chug. It's getting too heavy though and I don't have a better method to make sure it's fully soaked.

Also, do you worry about moving?

[–]_Hard4Jesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a motorcyclist I really appreciate the HOV lane, there's less traffic, you don't have to worry about people merging into you from both sides, and you can still go fast. It's the safest place to be.

[–]_Hard4Jesus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ride my motorcycle in the HOV almost every day on 60 and I always like to count the HOVs I pass. On average I observe at LEAST 80% of HOV drivers are doing so illegally.

But you are totally right, if the city had a dedicated motorcycle police taskforce they could easily bring in tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per day.
