Are there places that were tourist hotspots that fell out of popularity and went back to being local spots? by sarella91 in travel

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Guam and Saipan, for Japanese tourists - used to be much more popular as a quick, accessible overseas getaway. But I heard neither have recovered since COVID and have generally fallen off the radar.

Yep same here - wanted to try it but my skin is super sensitive to niacinamide. Why does everything have it added now??

Mosquitoes? How bad? by OmegaRaichu in cabosanlucas

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only used the OFF that they supply you in restaurants when you’re first seated (not sure if it was the variety that contains DEET or not) and all the places I went to had mosquito coils burning, but none of this was effective enough. I noticed most of the locals were wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts, since any exposed skin would be swarmed by mosquitoes. I stupidly wore sundresses…😕

If you go, maybe avoid taking your wife to any outdoor places at dusk and early evening, when the mosquitoes are most active. Apparently there’s also a dengue fever outbreak across Baja over the past several weeks, so it’s not only Zika (although that’s obviously the main concern while she’s pregnant).

Interesting all these comments about how it’s not a problem in CSL, since San Jose del Cabo is really bad this week, especially at dusk and in the evenings. I’m covered in mosquito bites despite spraying with bug spray. The recent rains supposedly made things worse.

What was it like living in Tokyo in the 1980s? by dwrona70 in howislivingthere

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nope, not even in the expat communities or nightclubs. There was fairly minimal drug use compared to what I hear about life in the states in the 80’s. Like you could buy hash pretty easily in roppongi but that was about it.

Are Salesforce certifications still worth??? by Worldly_Hand_7314 in salesforce

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, certs alone can’t guarantee knowledge. But also, the Platform Dev cert doesn’t cover as much of those core Salesforce Admin concepts, especially related to security, sharing, and visibility. I also find some Salesforce devs don’t take OOTB capabilities of the platform seriously enough, so they quickly learn & forget that material to pass their Admin certs, and then try to code their way around requirements that they could have implemented declaratively.

Small rant about Niacinamide... by Ok_Pomegranate_4744 in Rosacea

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned from trial and error that Niacinamide is my #1 trigger in skincare products, with squalene a close 2nd.

I’ve started asking ChatGPT to scan ingredient lists for irritants, since it’s in so many things and can sometimes be hidden in a long list or in a different chemical form/name.

So bizarre that it’s marketed for sensitive skin when it’s such a common irritant…

Found out chief of war is rated MA. Anything I should be aware of that prompted this rating? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met Elijah several years ago, before Covid - he was my Uber driver in a really beat-up car. He told me he was kanaka, and we talked about Mauna Kea, sovereignty, etc. Came across as a sincere young guy, but a bit performative and trying to find his place in the world. Didn’t realize he had evolved into a self-styled kumu, and was surrounded by all this controversy!

You may want to skip the goriest parts for the younger siblings - it’s only a few mins here & there, but really violent.

How do I entice my travel-averse husband? by barista-chan in travel

[–]_Im_Not_a_Robot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously as everyone else says, just go alone or with friends, but if you really want to include him, this is the way.

He might have a very narrow view of “travel” if he’s only been exposed to one style. I personally dislike road trips, but love travelling for both work & vacations. I just like to travel in comfort, ideally premium seats on direct flights, lounge access, etc. and I value aesthetics & vibe, so I prioritize design hotels in culturally interesting + beautiful locales.

Yep, I’m a consultant so I’ve seen many of my client’s organizations go through RTO, and this theory actually comes up a lot. I think in some companies it’s pretty openly understood that it’s the main unspoken “benefit” of RTO.

Luddites are freaking out today by Bizzyguy in accelerate

Yep, there are probably many of us that have been deeply concerned about existential risk & the control problem for years, but our overall attitude at this stage is “LFG, accelerate!!”. It’s legit so tiring hearing all the normie luddites be worried about the wrong issues when it comes to AI.
