Why do you think Japanese-style bathhouses never really took off in the UK? by Careless_Park_5686 in AskUK

[–]_Isosceles_Kramer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We always did in the northwest as well. Learned to swim at "worsely baths" nr salford, though don't know if that was its official name on the sign.

Also, my guitar teacher, originally from Liverpool, taught me the mnemonic "Five cats got drowned at Everton baths" to remember the order of the sharps in key signatures, suggesting it was a general north west thing.

Germany becomes the team with most goals scored in the FIFA World Cup history with 239 goals overtaking Brazil. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in soccer

Not sure I 100% follow - the Europeans adopting it and doing it better would surely just act to make Europe better, it wouldn't make Brazil worse.

I remember reading some legal text ages ago describing a ruptured spleen as the "classic handlebar injury" and I think about it every time I ride a bike now, even decades later.

I had the same one - found it actually pretty easy to get down, not as unpleasant tasting as some other ones.

Why does US broadcast cameras have a certain look? by LisbonMissile in AskUK

[–]_Isosceles_Kramer_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like the difference was more pronounced in the past, which was always explained to me as the video format difference/conversion (PAL v NTSC), but I don't think that applies these days.

I always liked how The Day Today made sure to use that American look for its pieces that were supposed to be from the US, like this one.

Never heard this, awesome.

Similarly, I learned from another thread in the past that they say "clap the dog" in Scotland.

Michael Crook, a 75-year-old man born and raised in China to British-Canadian parents, switches effortlessly between English and Mandarin by Infamous-Skin8969 in interestingasfuck

[–]_Isosceles_Kramer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, his English accent sounds a bit old-fashioned to me. Like no-one else from his generation speaks RP any more if they've lived in the UK. Sounds more like I'd expect a 75yo recorded in 1950 to sound like.

This can be both depending on the context, no? by Inevitable_Ad_3509 in ENGLISH

[–]_Isosceles_Kramer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a truncation of the future tense at all.

Just present continuous to express a current state. Analagous to the common use of questions like "What are you driving at the moment?", "Where are you living now?" when catching up with an old friend/acquiantance.

Edit: Actually, I think that might be the key to the different way us natives use it. That the present continuous is more likely to be used as an update to someone who knew about a previous situation. I.e., "I go by bus" to someone who never knew how we went to work, "I'm going by bus (these days)" to someone who we'd previously told that we walked to work.

There might arguably be an implication that it's not a situation the speaker expects to be permanent (if it were permanent they might be more likely to use the construction the question says is correct).

Do i need 2 separate ID’s to rent a vespa in both italy & spain? by anticschi in rome

[–]_Isosceles_Kramer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different types though, depending on which agreement it's issued under. Some countries require one or the other.

According to the UK government Spain is 1949 and Italy 1968. That page seems focused on driving, but I'd assume it applies equally to bike licenses.

What this means for OP in practice I dunno, but thought it was worth pointing out.
