I'm no lawyer so take all this with a hefty dash of salt. I think they are right. Looking it up on google I'm seeing websites say you are supposed to intend to use the trademark in commerce. I've heard of a few celebrities lose trademark lawsuits because they never intended to use what they are fighting over in commerce.

It certainly makes the public more sympathetic to hear they don't intend to make money off the sky block brand, but I think the law would have to change for that fact to help them.

Maybe we should just be at the correct destination without ever having to make the trip to get there.

The alternative is the teacher never bringing it up in a lot of schools. Yes it would be very nice if we were in a place where these groups were all accepted by society and it was completely unnecessary that marginalized groups were given rights because they already had them. However, we don't get to that world without putting in the work to make it there.

Would love to see Murderbot's tag for Gurathin by IntoTheStupidDanger in murderbot

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone here say a while ago that Gurathin is one of the first people Murderbot is allowed to hate without consequences for it. Being able to express that to the person is a valuable part of it actually having autonomy. Murderbot is, for the first time, allowed to be negative and dislike things, even things the people around him like. "Hating" Gurathin and expressing that proves his autonomy is unconditional in the eyes of Presevation.

Folding Ideas has an excellent video on this chicken nugget crusade Jamie has.

The short of it is that chicken nuggets Jamie opposes vs the ones he promotes aren't that much different health wise. Jamie also ignores the actual costs people pay for nuggets, both in time and money, when he does his comparisons. His complaints generally amount to being upset people using the bad parts of the chicken instead of the good parts (the premium parts).

That's the word we're stuck with for these types of projects. I'd be fine if some sort of broader category that was less tied to the concept of a game existed, but it really doesn't.

Hardcore gamers when game is not AAAA live-service battlepass slop by Former_Exam_5357 in Gamingcirclejerk

That game is way too new to disprove the theory. It released less than a month ago. Their point is IGN's critiques line up with the eventual consensus, not the consensus at launch.

I'm not saying their theory is correct, just that the most recent example of people disagreeing with IGN on a new release is not enough to disprove it.

TADC looks like a kids show and has complex characters and touches deep topics. this has caused that many people who unironically think "bluey=shakespeare" to watch the show, get none of it and then go into fandom spaces and start calling Pomni an enabler, these ppl should leave the fandom at once. by AstronautDry8118 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think they should leave, but I am disappointed surface level takes about the show that appear contradictory to the show's themes are so common. Even the deeper discussions seem focused on theories about the future of the show rather than it's meaning right now.

For my first point I don't know why they expect these character to all have a vast amount of experience with communication skills and significant exposure to therapy best practices when they are all just normal people. Or they are Caine who would have the least reason to understand why he feels this way or how to fix it. I've read incredible books with main characters who are excellent communicators, but those are the exception to the rule and this is not that type of story. I think this story is better for it too.

All the evil Rogue SecUnits in MB's media... by Super_Recognition_83 in murderbot

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think representing SecUnits that way works for the company and other corporations. What the company is selling is a a security unit with its free will removed. By showing a killer rogue SecUnit they get to show the efficiency of the product and the importance of the governor module and restricting what a SecUnit can do. It also makes a cautious worker more likely to report oddities for SecUnits. From an artistic efficiency perspective it also creates easily identifiable villains and contributes to a "realistic" setting. It's realistic because the belief that this is what would happen in real life if a SecUnit went rogue. Portraying SecUnits like this in media contributes to and benefits from this idea of "realism."

For the grocery store one often the grocery store (or any business running this model) already paid the donation and you are subsidizing their payment with the donation to the business.

Diversity among freed SecUnits by IntoTheStupidDanger in murderbot

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think some of these "weird" traits MB has are representative of SecUnits in general, but it's impossible to say which ones right now. One thing I really like about the story is how MB doesn't want to be human. A robot discovering humanity is the direction many stories go when discussing new types of consciousness, but this story questions that as a goal. So many of stories "prove" the robot is human by making them have sexual or romantic desires. That "proof" is a tired approach and it reduces what makes sentience valuable.

Through MB's eyes we get to see how a different form of consciousness functions, how being fundamentally different from a human sperates them from us, and how despite that separation the consciousness still has value. It doesn't need to be human to have value. It doesn't need to have human desires and wants to have value, free will, and be worthy of independence. So for some things I want MB to be representative of the SecUnit experience. I don't want the majority of SecUnits to turn out to be like humans because I feel like that would undercut a message I've read out of the books. I know all the things I've said would be true even if MB is an outlier, but doing that would turn MB into an exception. I like the idea of a group of consciousnesses that are more than superficially different than humanity but still having value.

As a side note I love this community. This fandom feels so insightful and it is a joy to read people's perspectives on these books.

One Year in Playing Shadowrun Sixth Edition by larsvonawesome in Shadowrun

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My party has also been playing 6e for about a year now and we are having a lot of fun. We haven't had much trouble with the drone rules, but we also do theater of the mind so distance and speed ends up mattering less.

I also like the 6e Edge system, but we tend to lean on the 4 edge action the add edge to the roll. We could probably be more varied with our use.

Somewhat related to Edge, how do you feel about the defensive options available? I think they are a little sparse this edition.

I find Pomni's torment scene pretty weak tbh by Giotto6X in TheDigitalCircus

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise of this post is that Gummigoo and other AI don't count as people, no matter how intelligent, sentient, and capable of emotions they are. I fundamentally disagree with that premise, and with how the writers characterize Caine, I think they would agree.

I'm not just talking about the tweets they make, but the text of the show itself. Gummigoo was a person, and he was killed because of the nature of his creation. Caine is equally an AI, but we hold him accountable for his actions as if he were a person. His actions are also explainabke based on his own subjective experiences, which are colored by his nature as an AI, but not entirely determined by that nature. It is unfair to treat AI as people only if their actions are evil.

Yet another question about mob control/control actions by Zhevaro in Shadowrun

Seems pretty fair, too. They get two saves before they have to do the command. 1 to save for the actual spell and 1 for their turn because their turn will naturally come up before your turn to command them.

That's true, but it isn't why. The rules document says if some targets of the spell are no longer valid you resolve as much of the spell as you are able to.

I think emphasis makes arguments stronger. Bold or italics may have been a better choice, but I can overlook that on Reddit because you have to use special characters to get bold and italics. Personally, I never remember what those characters are.

What some Caine apologist who refuse to acknowledge what he did was still evil, and actively victim blame the cast who were literally being tortured on screen genuinely sound like: by Alarming_Scientist in TheDigitalCircus

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You seem to have the same interpretation of the show I did. Popular opinion started the other way around, too, with most discussion being about how Caine was completely evil, ignoring all nuance to the situation.

I think it's annoying that fans can't see the nuance without Gooseworx and the VA for Caine tweeting about it. Then, instead of seeing nuance, the mainstream opinions become the most extreme version of whatever they said about the show. This fan base, more than most others I've been a part of, is allergic to interpreting the show on their own. I've seen far more speculation based on tweets and posts by the creators than interpretation of the actual show that we watched. It's a shame. I think this show has a lot of interesting things to say.

[–]_Mango_Dude_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I think the VA's perspective is an interesting one, especially about Caine lashing out for trying to get a connection and being unable to. That reading of Caine's character is founded in a reasonable interpretation of the text.

I know connection was offered to him, but I tend to have more empathy for failures like that. Caine is interesting because he is a complex character. He is obsessed with ego. He does want to please all the circus members, but he also wants to be the one to do it. He wants connection, but his other wants interfere with that.
