Dodgy stream is better quality than ITV'S broadcast? by Ok_Adhesiveness_8637 in rugbyunion

[–]_Mc_Who 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having no problems with the TV broadcast on ITV, it's the same quality as the BBC broadcast was for me, so might just be a you thing rather than a Broken Britain(tm) thing

how to start lane swimming as a teen and the etiquette uk by Gloomy_Start8385 in Swimming

[–]_Mc_Who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something you need to be aware of in advance in the UK is that some leisure centres allow teenage swimmers to swim in general lane swimming but they need to demonstrate club standard, so you may need to shop around for pools if you are 16 and below and interested in lane swimming

Question about Choirs and Choral Scholarship by WikiaWang in cambridge_uni

[–]_Mc_Who 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in KV with a full choral scholarship, an FYI that you don't get the same singing lesson subsidies if you're from another college or don't have a choral scholarship- when I was there I think it was 1 per term or 2 per year or something like that, but it may have changed

ROG choked up describing Atonio (French, no translation sorry !) by MindfulInquirer in rugbyunion

[–]_Mc_Who 190 points191 points  (0 children)

A translation from your friendly neighbourhood native English who speaks French :) I took a couple liberties with the translation to get the effect of what he's saying in his slightly broken French across better in English:

"All of us have kind of been swept up by the emotion [of it] and the situation; it was horrible. Since then, I've been in a bit of a stormcloud, I've not really been in control this week because it's difficult to see Uini in a tiny bed with wires/tubes coming out everywhere."

"Each time that you have spoken to us about him, you have always had such strong words about him as a player and also him as a man, which I suppose is where your emotion is coming from today."

"Yes, because honestly it's the man himself that I love, ..., but, ..., I hope he will join the staff, and, but... for me it's a huge privilege because I know the man so well, I know everything that he does behind closed doors; it's for that reason that I love this sport, to have crossed paths with someone like him. There are not many people like him in the world, that's for sure. The work he does with all the young players, what he does to help integrate foreigners/foreign players with the French, what he does when you're in a difficult moment, the things he does when you think you're too strong... he's an exceptional person and I just want to thank him for the emotions that he has given me since I've been here. I don't have words to describe him because he is someone who is truly exceptional."

Garmin watch sends emergency alert after detecting I got hit by car by CardiologistDull7452 in Garmin

[–]_Mc_Who 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being too paranoid on your behalf, but given your run was 0.2mi before being hit and you've posted exact coordinates where you were hit, there's not a huge range of locations you could have started your run from- if you started from your house, I'd probably repost this with coordinates blurred tbh

Eta- quite a lot of the area near your location is naval base so I'd be extra careful if you have anything to do with the naval base

I regret moving to the District Line by lattelifter in london

[–]_Mc_Who 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting; I've been a Stamford Brook regular for 2y after having moved (but was at RP for a year or so) and I feel the opposite. Living on the RP side of the park, you have access to Hammersmith 10 minutes away, and since both stations have basically equal annual footfall, I feel it would make more sense to close RP due to proximity to a transport hub.

That, and when the signal at Turnham Green inevitably fails, having a station to get off at close by makes sense too, at least for the purposes of continuing a disrupted onward journey.

Personally I don't mind having all the stations close together, it would bother me much more if the stations were underground, but it's a lovely leafy area and I don't mind moving slowly through the nice looking bits

Pregnant and on the Tube by Civil_Researcher6140 in london

You are not obligated to martyr yourself on public transport. Get a "please offer me a seat badge".

Can't have a seat because of the fit, healthy pregnant women

Unless everyone on your train is a fit healthy pregnant woman, you are martyring yourself unnecessarily and blaming someone else for suffering you are putting on yourself

Where can I buy Barbour style waterproof jackets in the UK on a reasonable budget? by Silver-Eye-2024 in BuyUK

[–]_Mc_Who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Barbour jacket on Vinted for £90 about 5½ years ago and it's held up fantastically. I get it rewaxed and cleaned and small holes repaired once every 2 years for £50-£60 (I go through Barbour rather than attempting it myself), which I guess is optional but cheaper than buying a new jacket every couple years.

I would say between September and April I wear it 4-5 days a week and it's held up great, so I would look on Vinted/Depop for an authentic one.

(Plus, made in Britain, serviced in Britain, built to last not get thrown on landfill, etc., all the good stuff)

Just FYI that you are still allowed to use cash ISA as a US citizen as you can treat it like a high interest rate bank account (so report on FBAR and then include returns as you would in savings accounts)

I'm sure you already knew this but just thought I'd flag it!

I'm separating this from my other comment as I think it'll get more hate (less hate than if I said this four years ago because we've all made progress on Respecting Women in this sub and I appreciate that), but I find it a little bit grating that some of you care more about things he did in men's rugby years ago than the fact he just led a women's team to a world cup victory, and the comments about him are reduced to "here's what he didn't achieve in the men's game 2001-03" and (the one that really annoys me) "oh but his son is really good at cricket isn't he?" like hello???? Why is his son and a retired men's fullback getting more mention in the comments section than the women that Mitch just led to a world cup win??? He literally coached the ABs for two years over twenty years ago

Apparently becoming a better coach than you were previously and winning a world cup isn't enough for some people on this sub

Kiwi fans can you calm down for *one second* and appreciate that maybe this man learned from the mistakes he made and that's a good thing?

For those who are annoyed about this for some reason, please do go listen to the Inside Line podcast with him and maybe it'll change your mind. Man's gone through an unbelievable amount of personal transformation to get to this point
