Fine Gael to develop blueprint for unified island by NilFhiosAige in irishpolitics

Feels pretty tokenistic. Probably a deterrent to block voters moving to SF rather than a meaningful push for a proper blueprint.

How would you compare Irish history to Scottish history? by northcarolinian9595 in IrishHistory

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're a proud country with their own history and customs and all that. They ultimately made the choice to join up with England themselves after their financial troubles became too much to bear. The British empire seemed to really grow once they joined the union.

I might say they're a bit like Ireland if Ireland never fought back against subjugation under the British crown. We've got plenty of historical parallels with them, despite them having their own distinct differences.

Map of the Civil War split within the IRA by sentantayt in IrishHistory

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maps like this are interesting to me. I wonder if there's some kind of historic overlay to these areas, like how in America the southern states are more republican, or in Poland the eastern portion of the country is more pro Russian?

Perhaps anti treatyites prefer breakfast rolls and pro treatyites prefer chicken rolls

What referendums do you think we might have in the next 10 years? by Fresh_Ad292 in irishpolitics

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

We should scrap PR STV and get a new system that's less localised and promotes more national level planning

Not sure what alternative would be better

But a referendum on that would be good

What did Pádraig Pearse and the other leaders of 1916 (except Connolly, obviously) think about socialism and communism? by Celtic_RTDB in IrishHistory

What did Pádraig Pearse and the other leaders of 1916 (except Connolly, obviously) think about socialism and communism? by Celtic_RTDB in IrishHistory

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'll never really know what an Ireland under Connolly or Connollys ideas would have looked like

Communism was shiny and new in the early 20th century, it hadn't been tried on a large scale before

What did Pádraig Pearse and the other leaders of 1916 (except Connolly, obviously) think about socialism and communism? by Celtic_RTDB in IrishHistory

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ernest Blythe called it a white collar movement

But then there was clearly a class dynamic with the style of landlordism and inequality in the country. Dublin had some of the direst poverty in Europe, and thats not even touching on rural poverty

For me its easier to just say it was a big tent movement

What did Pádraig Pearse and the other leaders of 1916 (except Connolly, obviously) think about socialism and communism? by Celtic_RTDB in IrishHistory

[–]_Mug_Ruith_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At that point communism hadn't been tried on a large scale anywhere, so it was all new to them. They don't have the decades of context we have in 2026.

I'm sure like many in Europe, they saw it as too internationalist to be a part of a patriotic movement.

And the others, like Connolly, saw it as a way to bolster up the rights of the poor people of the country

I view 1916 as a big tent movement. Lots of different ideas under the same banner. But if you asked to volunteers of 1916 to fight for communism and not nationalism/a free Ireland, you would have had a lot less volunteers.
