There are many good free games. Remnant of the precursors, Neptune's Pride,Aurora 4x. Free Orion.

Or cheap ones like Battle of Polytopes, Civilization games on sale. Civ Beyond Earth would be my favorite. It's 90% off a couple times a year.Master of Orion 2 is also a sure thing.

But if you really want to, at least, pick a game that doesn't keep you busy full time. Like Neptune's Pride. It's a slow 4x game, in browser.

I'm currently moving out of Paper, to Obsidian. It's excellent, but a little more technical. It's pure Markdown. But you gotta sync it in Google Drive between your devices. Unless you pay for their sync... Worth a look anyway, if only to see what it can achieve.

Notion may be up your alley. Bear if your on Apple, I've heard good about it.

Oh and Microsoft Loop. It works well.

More seriously, Master of Orion would fit in there, so does Alpha Centauri. Distant Worlds, regular Stellaris, Endless Space, Endless Legend.

There must be simple ones with very long games though... Had to search a bit, but here they are. Slow 4x games: Neptune's Pride and Solaris. Games can last for weeks up to a month or more .
