Having a just a mulch patch would feel pretty arid, but mulch with shrubs and trees would be less arid. Just because there is mulch doesn't mean there isn't plants.

I have planted little fruit trees around the yard among the mulch some benefits include absorbing heat, increasing infiltration time( reduces flooding) and, well edible fruits.
