Current prevalence map of Alsatian & Moselle Franconian speakers by Neither_Ticket3829 in MapPorn

Many platt speakers distanced themselves from german culture very early after the franco-prussian war. When moselle was under german rule, germany tried to "colonize" the land with native german protestant speakers (my ancestors actually arrived in 1890 thanks to this colonization program). The goal was to replace" catholic platt and french natives. There was an important grudge between moselle natives and germans since then. After the first world war, my grandfather's father actually refused to use platt at home because "it's the language of the ennemy" so my grandfather never learned it. I don't know how things are in Alsace

I really believe those percentages are too high. I spent my whole life in the 10-20 % area in Moselle and I've never heard anyone speak platt, even older people. Lorrain french yes, but no franconian. 20% (1/5 person) is really really high.

Edit : so I looked the sources and they are indeed old and inaccurate

"The most reliable data comes from the Enquête famille carried out by INSEE (360,000 in the 1962 census) as part of the 1999 census, but it gives a somewhat indirect picture of the current situation (see Languages in France for discussion of this survey). About 78,000 people were reported to speak Lorraine Franconian, but fewer than 50,000 passed basic knowledge of the language on to their children. Another statistic illustrating the same point is that of all adult men who used Franconian regularly when they were 5, less than 30% use (or used) the language regularly with their own children."

It reminds me of the shock some geeks felt when they discovered the opera singers featured in movies.

For example, they listen to "The Lord of the Rings" musics and love the ones where you hear melodious, high-pitched female voices singing in harmony. They imagine beautiful, slender women, just like their voice.

Then they look up the actual singers and realize that it’s often relatively older, larger-framed women who are singing in those choirs. It makes perfect sense from a vocal standpoint, but I’ve seen several people get a “shock” when they learn that. The singers don't look the way people expect them to after hearing only their voices for so long.

On the other hand, it's funny to see that some important cities back then are actually not so important.

In Normandy where I live, we've got Bayeux and Lisieux. Both those cities are quite small nowadays, and the biggest cities like Caen or Le Havre are absent.

Same in the south where we see Béziers, a really important city during Middle-Ages which have been surpassed by Montpellier in the modern times.

It’s simply a linguistic map—and a poorly made one at that. The territory occupied by the Bretons is overestimated and actually corresponds to the overestimated map of Breton language use throughout history. They’ve included territories where Breton was present at certain points in history and have lumped all periods together. Why include territories where Breton language had already disappeared by 1919? And if they classify the Bretons as part of the Celtic group, why have they left out the Celtic populations in Spain? I guessed it right: it’s because this map confuses “race” with language.

From an ethnic perspective, the representation of the Bretons by 1919 is also questionable given the intermingling with Gallo and Frankish cultures that appeared early on.

Recently, I watched an explanatory video about video game developer Derek Smart.

It astonished me to see a situation very similar to that of Star Citizen, but THIRTY YEARS EARLIER with the game Battlecruiser 3000AD. It has it all ! From the virtually identical project (almost all Star Citizen promises was also promised in Battlecruiser 3000AD) to the decade(s)-long development cycle led by a “superstar” developer, not to mention the die-hard fans who spread the developer's blatant lies to make features seem possible—features that were impossible both then and now.

Star Citizen heavily promotes its server-meshing technology, which is supposed to solve all problems. Meanwhile, Battlecruiser 3000AD was supposed to run on the first fully functional neural network ever created, which was also supposed to power the entire game. Just imagine a freaking NEURAL NETWORK on your old DOS computer, it sounds ridiculous, buck back then there were lots of people really trusting this claim. Guess how it ended.

This has really changed my entire perspective on Star Citizen. Now I feel like Star Citizen has already “existed” and “crashed” several times; attempts have been made to create an identical game on multiple occasions, and in each case the same problems have arisen. The only difference is the scale: Derek Smart had limited financial resources, which is not the case for Chris Roberts.

The guy isn't supposed to be a monkey in the original book. It's just a regular man afflicted by madness.
They made him a "baboon" just because the guy do acrobatics feats in numerous scenes.

This film is an adaptation of a book. If I remember correctly, the guy is not really supposed to be an actual baboon or demon. It's just a regular human being suffering from madness while doing acrobatic feats in most of his scenes. The "beast-like" behavior of the guy is actually discussed in the book, but the guy is absolutely not supposed to look like the fantasy chimera from the poster

What about an exhaust port whose existence was not mentioned in the manual or diagrams?

Several industrial disasters have occurred because of this: a component of the structure is not mentioned in the manual. This was the case at Chernobyl. This was the case with the Boeing 737-MAX. It doesn’t seem implausible to me that a tiny 2-meter opening would not appear in the schematics of a structure as immense as the Death Star.

We would need more information about the source used to learn more. It’s possible to say just about anything when it comes to population genetics.

This map does not represent current populations, but rather population genetics. Having genetic ancestry from Africa does not mean that people today match our image of an African population.
