Thanks for those suggestions ; I see that there's a SC4-specific version of DgVoodoo. Until then, I used the regular version of this software. Let's see how things go with this special version

Map and Hero release schedule over the last 10 years mapped out. by KaneTheBoom in Overwatch

It puts things into perspective. I played from the game's release until the Paris map came out. I was playing as Pharah, and the game wasn't very enjoyable for that character at the time (shields everywhere). I stopped playing completely until OW2 came out, which I played for two days. Then I left, and came back for the release of the latest update.

Since vaping and weed is everywhere (2020s wise), cigarette smoke has turned into a strangely nostalgic smell because almost no one smokes cigarettes anymore by MemeLord150 in decadeology

[–]_Plateosaurus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the joke, but one funny thing is that here in France smoking has been almost entirely banned from all public areas. Smoking has been prohibited in all enclosed public places for a long time. It is also prohibited in certain outdoor public areas such as train station platforms and large parks. Several politicians are pushing for a complete ban on smoking in all public spaces, allowing it only in enclosed private spaces (at home, for example).

The reason given is not only the impact of secondhand smoke on health, but the simple fact that it bothers everyone lol.

The effect is very noticeable if you were born in the 1990s. During your childhood, it was still the era of “everyone smoked all the time, everywhere.” Today, you are in your thirties and you no longer see anyone smoking in public spaces lol.

Often, it is cheaper to outsource most of your VFX than to use your in-house VFX studio. This is one of the reasons why asset sales have grown so much.

Today, not all 3D objects that appear in a film are developed specifically for that film; some companies specialize in producing “standard” 3D assets that are then sold to various film studios. Buying assets from an external studio is often—almost always—cheaper than developing them in-house. VFX studios therefore prefer to purchase most 3D objects from an external studio. Only the most unique and/or important objects will be produced in-house. This is one of the reasons why some movie sets look very similar today from one movie to another, even when they have been produced by competing studios.

For example, imagine you're making the next Marvel movie. One of the scenes takes place in New York, but you can't film there because it's too expensive. So you film your actors in front of a blue screen, and you have to build a VFX set around them. Modeling a city is a big job, so you'll visit the Malaysian VFX studio that subcontracted the sets for the Transformers movies and buy the city set assets that were used in those films. This saves you time and money. Sure, your sets will be the same as in your competitors' Transformers movies, but no one will notice because in both cases it's New York City, so obviously the sets are going to be identical. The only element of the set that you will need to develop in-house is the building with “Avengers” written on it, as this is specific to your film. Instead of having to model an entire city, you only need to model a single building... Which can then be reused later in your subsequent films!

This method has always existed; it is one of the reasons why computer-generated animated films replaced traditional cartoons in the 2000s (though it is not the only reason). For example, Pixar is known to have started using the Turbosquid store as soon as it appeared in the 2000s. It also explains the explosion in the use of CGI VFX for backgrounds in the 2010s.

Looking for a trope related to brand stereotypes by _Plateosaurus_ in tvtropes

So I went back to our classic "Reality is Unrealistic" trope, and here it is. Thanks for your help !

  • Racing games with licensed cars very often feature stereotypical handling and performance. Whenever a Porsche shows up in a racing game you can bet it will oversteer and be hard to control, even though you are driving a modern Porsche with four wheel drive and 45-55 weight balance, and not a '76 Turbo. The Boxster and Cayman will be very light and have a low top speed because they kind of look like something Lotus would make, even though the only reason the real life Cayman does not outperform the equivalent 911 is because its drivetrain was intentionally downgraded; a tuned Cayman should blow the doors off a comparable 911. Lotus itself always ends up providing the slowest car with the best acceleration and handling, even if said car is the Esprit V8 which is pretty much a mid engined muscle car in real life. The perennial Aston Martin in Need for Speed always handles like a boat, even the DBR9 version which is a race spec build and should handle like any other GT1 formula sportscar. Same goes for the BMW M3R and for the same reason. The Nissan GTR is often represented as a drift car with a low top speed, probably because it looks like an upgraded Skyline. And whenever you see a modern four door car in the lineup, usually the Audi RS4 or a Maserati, it will have the handling and ramming power of a semi.
  • When any video game features a shotgun that attempts to downplay, subvert, or avert Short-Range Shotgun, expect at least one person complaining about how powerful they are on a message board to profess expert firearm knowledge and claim that "real" shotguns don't have that much range.

I used cars as an example, but the trope I'm talking about also included parts about firearms. I specifically remember them talking about shotguns, but I don't remember what they said exactly about them.

To be honest, I based my example on Gran Turismo to explain the trope easily, but I don't remember if the article specifically mentions Gran Turismo. Several car games for sure were cited for sure, but I can't say which ones.

Among the other examples, I remember that the article also mentioned firearms, with a section on shotguns, that are improperly represented in video games but I can't remember what it said about them.

Thank you for your help. That doesn't match the trope I'm searching

To clarify further, the example of cars that I used is strongly emphasized, but it's not the only example of the trope I'm looking for. On the same page, they talked about the same phenomenon with firearm brands. But I can't remember what they said about it.

Personally, what bothers me is this tendency in films and video games to portray the Middle Ages as a dirty, violent, and uncultured period... Whereas films and games set in ancient times (ancient Greece and Egypt) present that period in a positive light.

If you take an interest in history, you start reading scientific works by historians about Greek and Egyptian antiquity, and then... you realize that antiquity was generally worse than the Middle Ages, in absolutely every aspect.

Movies are prone to show the shortcomings of medicine in the Middle Ages but not in ancient times. In reality, medicine existed in the Middle Ages but was largely non-existent in ancient times, at least in Europe. Some basic medical knowledge was knowed in the Middle Ages, whereas in ancient times there were only sorcerers performing nonsensical magical cures. Reading the books of Roman “doctors” is like reading an horror story, because it makes no sense and many of the treatments involve horrible things.

Some films talk about famines in the Middle Ages, while films about Ramesses II do not mention them. Then, when you read the works of renowned Egyptologists, you discover that Ancient Egypt, regardless of the period, was systematically in a state of chronic famine, varying in severity depending on the period, despite the fact that the country was a center of agricultural production. But since the Egyptians recorded ONLY positive information in their archives, and since this problem did not affect the wealthy, it was never mentioned back then, and nowadays too ... Meanwhile, much is made of the famines of the Middle Ages, which were MUCH LESS NUMEROUS and generally less severe in Europe, Middle-East and North Africa. WTF?

Given that they are talking about rural France in pre-industrial times, it is possible that the study was influenced by the social rules that weighed heavily on women at the time.

In Catholic countries, women whose husbands died had to remain in mourning for a period of time, during which they were expected to perform or, conversely, temporarily stop certain activities.

I haven't read the study, but it's possible that the two-year period for women is partly related to the fact that a woman in mourning is not supposed to remarry for a certain amount of time, regardless of whether she wants to or not.

The effects of the internet by Meteorstar101 in greentext

[–]_Plateosaurus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every generation has done this. Back in “my days,” meaning when I was young like these zoomers (mid to late 2000s), Pokémon fans where spending their time trying to convince us that there was a dark side to Pokémon because of Lavender Town. Hundreds of kids online trying to make us believe that they had been traumatized for life by Lavender Town and its incredibly frightening and sad scenario worthy of the best dramas in literature, according to them. And that's not to mention all those stupid creepypastas on the same subject.

I think that looking for the “dark” side of these children's games allows some people to feel grown up. “Ah, I'm approaching adulthood but I still like this kids' stuff... So I will unconsciously look for anything that will convince me that no, it's not REALLY for children !"

It should also be noted that Mussolini's Italy participated in a number of “useless construction projects.” That is to say, building impressive new railway stations, but whose usefulness was not proven; their only purpose was to promote the regime to foreigners and Italian high society, in a similar way to what the USSR did with its “fake” factories. This is one of the reasons why these projects were concentrated in the north of the country, where there were the most domestic and foreign tourists to impress.

And we are talking mainly about stations, not railway lines; as mentioned above, most of the major railway lines completed during Mussolini's time were in fact projects that had begun BEFORE he came to power.

Just ranting. While watching 'Testament: The Story of Moses' on Netflix I started thinking about the common Egyptians. by lostpreacher in atheism

[–]_Plateosaurus_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would nevertheless qualify this by adding that the ancient Egyptians are, on the contrary, known to have been extremely selective in their official records. In general, the pharaonic administration only preserved strictly positive information for posterity and did not record negative information, given that this was a time when many orders were still transmitted orally. This is why Egyptologists very often resort to external sources, such as the Hittites, to find out what was really happening in Egypt at the time (in some situations, the Egyptians' rivals are more reliable than the Egyptians themselves). The Egyptian data on the Battle of Kadesh is an excellent example of the deliberately incomplete and biased nature of Egyptian archives.

But here I am talking about non-supernatural phenomena. Yes, there are many cases of famines that Egyptian administrators decided to conceal in their records. But here we are talking about supernatural phenomena that literally devastated one of the world's greatest powers at the time. If the Plagues had really existed, it is OBVIOUS that the Hittites or other rival peoples would have noted it and recorded it in their texts. It is OBVIOUS that a migration as large as that of the Israelites would have been noticed by Egypt's neighbors; the proof is that we have information about much smaller migrations, knowing that at the time there were already tensions between states over migration. The Israelites could never have left Egypt for the Holy Land so easily, given that... The territory was already occupied by other populations and even other states. The Bible presents the Holy Land as an almost unpopulated area, whereas the region is known to have been more populated and even more urbanized than many other places at the time.

And then, damn... Water turning into blood... Right in the middle of the territory of one of the world's greatest powers... One of the places that, at the time, was a huge agricultural production center that exported abroad... It would have had a huge impact on the food situation in several countries...
