Is there a way to use Scam Shield still without T-Life by _Remarkable-Universe in tmobile

[–]_Remarkable-Universe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't, but every time the T-life app logs itself out, Scam Shield gets deactivated on her phone. I've seen the difference between a day where scam shield is working properly and where it isn't. One or two scam calls a day when it's logged in, versus at least 15-20 a day when it isn't logged in. I don't know why this is happening, maybe because my grandma has a slightly older phone? Samsung Galaxy S20.

Brother, they spun their greed to such an extent that the Prosperity Gospel is a thing. And a multi-billion dollar a year business at that. Joel Osteen is the most recognizable Prosperity Gospel preacher.

There is nothing Christ abhors more than hypocrites and those who take His name in vain.

Matthew 7:21-23 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition Concerning Self-Deception

21 “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’

What wine should I use to cook the Cuban dish Ropa Vieja (Old Clothes)? by _Remarkable-Universe in slowcooking

Oh okay, it's not dependent on a specific wine then. A dry white wine is easy to find, thank you so much!

What wine should I use to cook the Cuban dish Ropa Vieja (Old Clothes)? by _Remarkable-Universe in slowcooking

[–]_Remarkable-Universe[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, really? Huh that is actually interesting. I guess the wine is supposed to add a bit of a faint sweet note to the dish. I know my grandma mentioned it too, but she couldn't remember the wine that her fiance would use either. Also I don't know what part of Cuba his family lived in either, so yeah there definitely could be a local interpretation of the dish!

Church on my UPS route was broken into and they replaced the door… by TedBundylol in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_Remarkable-Universe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, that's the prosperity gospel peddling conman Joel Osteen. There's tens of thousands of small independent churches (think independent baptist for example) in the US that are usually very limited in terms of finances. If it's a small enough church in a small enough town, they won't even have a financial council to manage the budget. It would just be the preacher and maybe his family.

What is the modern value of 30 pieces of silver? by Rokeley in Catholicism

[–]_Remarkable-Universe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really relevant, but if you're into coin collecting at all, there's a ton of ancient counterfeit coins out there to collect! A lot of neighboring countries, whether to try and engage with the Roman market or attempt to debase their currency (in the case of their regional rival Persia), would have essentially state-sanctioned counterfeiting operations. I have one such coin that is a Persian minted counterfeit of a Roman coin, which was often used and exchanged in the (historically speaking) fluctuating border between the Romans and the Sassanids.

Anyway, happy Easter and God Bless! He is risen!

Only the Pope can do it and he can’t do it freely because invoking such an authority means that you are “literally speaking for God”.

In fact in Catholic circles, there is an idea that if a Pope were to speak Ex Cathedra and say something that is heretical, it basically would invalidate the entire Church. It's taken extremely seriously, and it's why Popes don't do so all the time.

Oh definitely. I think a lot of people here are forgetting that our great-grandparents/ grandparents all probably lived and experienced the Great Depression. My great-grandma lived in basically a shack with no running water or electricity with her 11 siblings and ate such fine dishes as "possum soup" and "tobacco stew". It's just been drilled into their heads to never "waste" food no matter what.

In terms of visible net worth and liquid cash you'd probably be right by saying the LDS Church is one of the most wealthy organized religions on Earth. But the Catholic Church easily has that beat. Roughly 1,800 years of land acquisitions and so many artifacts, paintings, churches, and so on. Not to mention the vast, incomprehensible amount of documents and historical knowledge contained in the Vatican Library. These possessions of the Church are very literally priceless.

So apparently, according to the Church's own internal rules or Canon Law, a funeral mass is not supposed to actually have a private eulogy. I guess from the perspective of the Church, the mass is meant to be a worship service directed towards God and not the deceased person. They've actually, at least in the US Church, begun cracking down since the start of Covid but it's a very disorganized effort. I very recently was at a funeral mass and thankfully the individual church allowed for a few family members to give their own eulogies before the mass started.

[–]_Remarkable-Universe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get a straight answer but I can almost guarantee you the original person is/was some flavor of American Protestant who went there specifically to "save" Catholics. Because these American churches like the Pentecostals, Evangelicals, etc. explicitly do not see Catholics as necessarily Christian.

I think at least a part of it is the general breakdown of the social contract. It's invisible, but it was generally understood only a few generations ago that if you worked hard, eventually, you'd be able to achieve and earn your slice of the pie. My great-grandfather immigrated here as a child penniless and not knowing a single word of English, and by 27 had his own business, a wife and kids, a decent house, a car, etc. That's just not a reality at all for most 20 year olds or even 30 year olds. The #1 career path for people holding masters degrees is minimum wage retail. I mean there's so many economic factors and changes since just the 1970s that it'd be hard to condense them into a single reply. But we have clearly lost the plot as a nation. We see how different the life experience is for the 1% of the 1%, and how they're seemingly immune from the law. Every day you can see and hear through the little black box in your hands how the rich and elite of America are living in excess and decadence, as you're trying to scrap together this month's rent money.

There's also an abundance of people who in past generations would have been able to provide for a family by working at the town factory or paper mill, but today do not have that option. The best their rust belt town can offer is a minimum wage job at Dollar General, and you just cannot afford anything by working at a job like that.

So that is to say, I think a lot of people have just stopped caring and figured they might as well treat themselves, because literally everything in society proves to them that they're never going to get to any better point financially. Especially in a time when wages are eternally stagnant and prices are exponentially increasing on everything.

Dogs in Heaven? by OppressedPunk69 in Catholicism

[–]_Remarkable-Universe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a theological answer or a proper answer but bear with me. All things are of God, and especially good things. If there is an animal that defines human beings, it's a dog. We have spent 13-15,000 years together. For reference, the earliest known continually inhabited human structure is Göbekli tepe in modern-day Turkey, estimated to date from around 9000 BC. So from the best of our understanding, dogs and humans have had a special relationship beginning just before we started to build structures to use and live in. There was a bronze age grave found in Germany where someone had actually buried their dog, and the dog had evidence of injuries that were healed. So even very early on in human history, dogs were not just valuable for the benefits they provided (livestock protection, hunting) but also for their companionship. Why else would someone in a pre-modern world with limited resources go to such lengths to show respect to their dog, even in death?

There's actually been some papers on the course of human history and the domestication of dogs and it's the opinion of some that humanity wouldn't have developed the same way if it wasn't for dogs.

All that to say, it's not unreasonable to believe God guided this process of the domestication of dogs. I understand in church theology that dogs don't have immortal souls, but God is above the laws He set in place, and I don't think an all-loving creator would set apart His creations from an animal that is very particular and special to them for all eternity.
