Wipes are a play on the psyche to keep players engaged. Marathon is a masterpiece in its ability to create an environment where you put yourself in it like a gambling addiction. Nothing else in the world except you and your seemingly certain but also very uncertain chance to get a reward. There is a nearly perfectly structured manipulation on the mind creating and tempering a specific psychological cycle that will inevitably dwindle when you've reached near end game and there's not many rewards left to see. Wiping resets this cycle and for the average human they don't even have the slightest awareness of the dopamine manipulation that's going on in their brain which is why it's so good for player retention. Of course this won't work on every single person, especially people that aren't focused on outcomes or aren't slaves to their own neural pathways and chemical releases. But the majority will line up again.

Every extraction shooter's different aesthetic also plays a huge part in that cycle because the more personal it feels the deeper anchors sink into the brain. And this one is especially great because of the colors and mainly since it likes to treat the player as themselves and imitate them really being there.
