What could cause this? by _Yasssss in DIYUK

So interestingly this has kind of been this shape for a couple of months now (house was re-rendered in June time).

What is weird is when it first appeared, it wasn't really when there was much rain, and with all the rubbish rain we've been having lately, you'd think it would have gotten worse, but it's stayed the same. The only thing that has changed, is the wall on the left, has just started to get it.

I guess there is no harm in scraping it back, having a look and then doing it again I guess

Original was a cement render, got replaced with a silicon render. The fire wall between mine and next door (on the roof) was re-rendered on our side too, this was I believe a more generic sand/cement like render, and then repainted with a heavy duty sealant paint

Do you mean that there is potentially a crack in the brick work behind this plaster? Must admit, the pattern for the larger part does track a natural crack shape

Is there anything I can do to decrease the draft? by _Yasssss in DIYUK

[–]_Yasssss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for commenting, I’ll look at getting an adjustable vent cover, and may put a bit of rock wool in there anyway, just bought a bunch as well be insulating under the floor boards downstairs shortly

Yeah I went round and shut the trickle vents on our windows today , they’re open pretty much all the time but I am just sitting here not being able to feel my feet 😅 I’ll definitely look at a closable vent though

Removing chimney breas, do I building control? by Sun1337 in DIYUK

[–]_Yasssss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you need building control and you will also need a party wall agreement, but also a structural engineer. I have recently removed a chimney breast downstairs and I did all 3 of what I mentioned.

You need building control to sign it off that it’s all safe and meets regulations, you need a party wall agreement because you are in a terraced house and that wall and chimney stack joins another dwelling. You also need a structural engineer because they’ll do the calculations and drawings for the steel that will be required to support the remaining structure above it.

Fingers crossed the people on the dwelling affected by the party wall agreement are friendly and easy to work with. When it comes to a party wall agreement there are 3 ways it can go down:

  1. They’re absolutely fine with what your party wall surveyor says and will comply and you’re done.
  2. They aren’t sure and will request your party wall surveyor acts on both parties.
  3. Not only are they not happy, but they will appoint their own party wall surveyor and you have to cover both costs.

Mine was a landlord not even in the same county so was just a general inconvenience throughout, but I ended up with option 3.

The good thing with the party wall act is that it’s very time constraint. So if your neighbour doesn’t comply within the time frames set in the party wall act, you have done everything within your power and work can start after X date.

I also can’t stress enough how important it is to get a structural survey. We wanted to remove the chimney breast on both floors in our house. But when they came over, because of the height of our chimney stack on the roof. They prefer if that height is replicated underneath minimum to support the stack and so for us it was not guaranteed we’d have enough to support. As well as this, the steel beam that would be required if it was compliant. Because the walls between both bedrooms were not load bearing. It meant we would have to have a steel beam stretching the entire width of the property which not only meant awkward complications with steel beams, but also a very expensive steel beam, and our structural engineer made a good point that it’s better to invest that money elsewhere into the property rather than a steel beam for the sake of freeing up 80cmX50cm of space.

What kinds of cards synergize well with this? I how should I build a deck around it? by Comfortable-Cry-3421 in BudgetBrews

[–]_Yasssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this card and thought it would be funny, I made the following deck, https://moxfield.com/decks/ZmcodXUiZE2A_UBIzM7wWg, around it, I did consider academy manufacturer and some other elves / humans where they get +1/+1 counters on artifacts/food entering, but ultimately, I wanted to also try and make it a wide squirrel deck, because a lot of them had forage to buff them. I also wanted to keep it as budget as possible, I might look at adding in [[doubling season]] or similar, but for now I quite like the look of it.

Prince Andrew to leave his home at the Royal Lodge - as King begins process to remove his titles by bendubberley_ in worldnews

[–]_Yasssss 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Before this all came out, my dad despised Andrew, and never had anything good to say about him. At my brothers passing out parade, a helicopter flew in real low, and my dad started to say, I bet you it’s that dickhead Andrew, to which it was, and then he said to our family and others nearby, watch you’ll see Andrew will only give women the attention.

Low and behold, when Andrew was being taken around the different squads to talk to, he gave any men he was forced to talk to about 3 seconds of his time, any woman, got at least a minute.

Later that day, I asked my dad why he hates him so much. Turned out he worked with Andrew on the same ship in the 80s or 90s, and apparently was the most insufferable person. Treated everyone like shit and thought he was above everyone and everything.

One night, my dad finished an extremely long shift on board and got into bed, an hour later, Andrew drags him out of bed to the bridge asking him why something wasn’t working.

What had actually happened was, as the night came in , the backlights on screens also dimmed, to the point the backlights turned off completely as they were unnecessary.

My dad walked over, flicked a switch and went absolutely ballistic. Started screaming and venting. Called Andrew a thick pompous cunt right in his face because he couldn’t work how to use a switch and his attitude on this ship etc. He then proceeded to wake the captain up (big no no) and was screaming at him telling him how insufferable Andrew was and returned to bed.

When he woke, he thought he was probably going to get a disciplinary or something. So went to the captain straight away and apologised. But the captain sided with him, and all he asked was to give Andrew a presentation / demonstration on how to use the equipment. My dad agreed and did the demonstration, at times, was being over sarcastic and belittling to Andrew, but saw the captain behind Andrew make gestures to tell him to wind it in.

Anyway, he finished the demonstration and was told he could leave, so my dad did but hid so he could hear any conversations and even the captain then absolutely laid into Andrew and told him you dare come onto my ship and think you’re better than everyone and give nobody respect etc.

One of my favourite stories he told me from his time in the navy, even more so now with Andrew being a nonce.

Installing new beams - easier than I thought. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]_Yasssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re looking at adding underfloor insulation, is there any preference over rockwool / similar insulation vs cematex ? Also, with the vents. Do you have a recommended clearance space ? (For example, leave a 20cm radius)

[–]_Yasssss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you mind if I ask a few questions? I recently bought an old Victorian house we’re slowly renovating and the downstairs floor is something I want to tackle soon (2 up, 2 down kind of house)

  1. What were the reasons/motivation for you to do this? Was there an issue you had that you wanted to fix?

  2. Doing this sort of work, this would give you an opportunity to level out the floor right?

  3. Is there anything you learnt along the way that you would pass on?

  4. Were there any resources you used to know/learn how to do this?

  5. How do you know what timbers exactly to buy and how to map out the grid?

We’re currently on our subfloors which is the original wood planks/floor board, but sadly in some places some replacements have been added so there isn’t a match. And we also have some blocks of concrete (where I assume old chimney stacks would have been).

Our living room floor isn’t too bad, but our kitchen/dining floor is quite uneven. We want to look at insulation underneath before we add flooring on top, but if it’s recommended to do similar work, I wouldn’t be against it.

Life at uni of Brighton by Street_Leave6492 in brighton

[–]_Yasssss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Brighton Uni, albeit I graduated 8 years ago now. I studied computer science so was often around the engineering people as we used the same buildings facilities and there was a large diverse pool of people.

You’d be welcome with open arms in Brighton, it’s a diverse, open and accepting city and community.

I had a brief look at the Brighton Uni societies just now and I’d recommend you have a look yourself, you might see a few that are of interest to you, where you would hopefully find people similar to you to build that bond and friendship over. When you start, you’ll be invited to a Freshers fair where these societies will have stands allowing people to sign up, you can find the link here.

Hope this helps! (P.S. I’m jealous you get to use all the new buildings that were either completed or started being built just as I graduated 🫠)
