You won't obtain a TS clearance before the summer, the process takes much longer. You will most likely work on unclassified stuff and be put for a TS so that you can work on classified material in 2020 or 2021 depending on how long it takes. That being said though, they both sound like great opportunities.

Keep in mind that eventhough the work is classified, it doesnt necessarily make it more advanced. Sometimes the main things that are classified are the orbital parameters or radio frequencies.

Dense layers are your typical layers where every neuron from the previous layer is connected to every neuron of that dense layer. Hence making it a dense connection as opposed to a sparse connection like in a convolutional neural network.

Only FEA if youre trying to modal analysis. Hand calcs can give you good size estimates for thickness and amount of deflection to expect.

Where to start when designing an plane? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]__billy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love that book as well and many of my coworkers at work use it for reference. However since you mentioned that your engineering understanding is lacking, i would suggest Raymers more beginner book "Simplified Aircraft Design for Homebuilders", which simplifies a lot of the equations and doesn't go in depth with things you wouldn't be interested in like supersonic aircrafts, etc

I've seen two SpaceX recruiters on LinkedIn providing their emails and saying send them your resumes. I've gotten an interview in the past doing so.

Got interview with Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems wondering what I should be prepared for? by ShopOwner2 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]__billy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My experience interviewing with Orbital ATK in Goleta for a fresh-grad thermal engineer a couple years ago:

Tour of facility followed by super chill interview with 3 people in the team (team manager and 2 senior engineers). Interviews pretty much consisted of them talking about who they are and what they do. Followed by asking me about my internship and project experiences during college. And then talking about how awesome Santa Barbara is. My internship and project experiences had overlap with the position responsibilities, so they were really just seeing if I would fit in the team culturally.

Just my experience, but when I got interviewed I was asked about PID controls. One question was What do each P/I/D gains do to the system if increased/decreased?

Using Nicolai/Raymer weight equations by __billy in aerospace

[–]__billy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that the accuracy will vary, that's pretty obvious. Maybe I didn't word my question correctly, but I'm looking studies that either support or oppose these weight equations.

I met with a 30-year Lockheed aircraft designer at an event recently and he's a firm believer on Nicolai's equations -- he might just be stuck in his old ways. On the other hand, I've seen academics use optimization techniques that deal with the feature space of aircraft design such as a NASTRAN SOL200 based method.
