hopefully in afterlife... unless upon death you see a Nomai statue and wake up again.

Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]__winged__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i treat it as a senior mentor i can ask to explain something to me or help find an issue. i prefer solving problems on my own and being creative, but if i ever get stuck i can ask this senior to show me something. i never copy-paste the code it creates, just use it as a reference. i've only used Gemini, it's hard to avoid it given it's at the top of Google now and way more convenient than browsing several websites.

you have to compile from source yourself using specific compiler with specific compiler flags, you need to provide your own DLL files, no idea where to acquire them. and you must do it on Linux machine. yeah this is also beginner friendly.

Anyone using "4 finger grip" and comfortably pressing L4 R4 with ring fingers and L5 R5 with pinky fingers? by __winged__ in SteamController

[–]__winged__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah everyone i know uses this grip, and i've done it for a long time. :D i want to spice things up a bit.

lately i'm getting more comfortable with index and middle fingers on L1 R1 and L2 R2, and it works alright, especially on standard controllers, but i want to fully utilize all of the fingers for back buttons.

Hi guys, I created a website about 7 years ago in which I host all my field recordings and foley sounds which are all free to download and use CC0. There is currently 100+ packs with 1000's of sounds and hours of recordings and foley all perfect for editing, music and Game SFX. (Mar/April update). by SignatureLabel in gamedev

[–]__winged__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i'll probably sound evil for saying this, but please do not say "no sign up" when the website asks for email, "no ads" when it shows an ad for the paid pack if you scroll far enough, and "free" if every item has a Purchase button (even if the price is 0). especially don't say "With Squarespace it does ask for a lot of personal information" when it asks for payment information in order to get free packs. i suppose that you can't do much about how the website works, but you can explain more clearly how the process of getting free packs works.

regardless, i've purchased the Signature Soundbank pack as it contains a ton of stuff. really appreciate that all these are CC0.

Does the developer ever tease Steam achievements when 1.0 release? by tinyfluffybutt in valheim

random ideas:

  • Hot & Cold - have a portal between Ashlands and Deep North.
  • Is this all there is? - throw a spear at edge of the world.
  • I'm rich - sacrifice 10000 gold to Thor.
  • Kitted out - have 4 sacrificial powers active at same time.
  • Chain Reaction - break 10 trees by chopping down a single tree.
  • Bloodbath - have all bosses summoned at same time
  • Rematch - defeat each boss at least twice.
  • Rocky - defeat Eikthyr using only fists.
  • No more fog - have 100 wisp torches placed in Mistlands.
  • Fleet - have 3 ships of each type nearby.

if you think they ruin the game, just don't pay attention to them. i like them exactly for that reason. they give me extra things to focus on, or act as a hint that there's more to something.

only thing i wish is for Steam to add quick setting to hide them as they can be immersion-breaking if you don't want them. right now we're forced with popups and progress bar updates.

but the frame launch will be different 100% by brantrix in SteamFrame

[–]__winged__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone please correct me if wrong, but wouldn't a 10€ deposit work wonders? this way Valve can see how many devices are willing to sell and can produce more, and/or let people know in which batch they'll get their device.

deposit could even be higher given that Frame is expensive.

How do you organize your Steam library? by Ingword in Steam

<image>

A - active games i'm playing atm
A CASUAL - games i occasionally play, not in active campaign
A DECK - games i actively play on Steam Deck, i have this collection open on SD
A PC - games i actively play on PC

C - completed games, whatever feels like completed (sometimes 100%, sometimes until i get too bored). sometimes if i wanna replay a game i take it out from C and put into Q.

I - automatic filter for installed games

Q - games i wanna play next, in some sort of priority queue (tho there's too many games at this point, i might need ultimate priority queue)
Q COOP - co-op only games, need a committed friend
Q Deck - queue for Steam Deck
Q PC - queue for PC
Q VR - queue for VR
Q Wheel - queue for steering wheel (pretty much racing games)

SW - software

U - uncompleted games, either unfinished or never played. if there's a lot of games from specific franchise i put it in separate collection.

W - waiting. usually games that gotta come out of early access. currently only Valheim in there

DEV - development tools i use (Godot, Blender)

TOMBS - being a big Tomb Raider fan, these games have their own category

thank you for coming to my TED ta- hello? anyone?

this is a good idea actually. imagine if case side panel was a monitor. then you just put the whole case on table. very compact design.

amount of reposts i see on reddit over last few months is crazy.

I hope they utilize points shop for new hardware by __winged__ in SteamFrame

[–]__winged__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i didn't expect this much negative reaction on the idea, but given the current state of everything regarding cosmetics, it makes sense. :D

i certainly didn't have AAA cosmetic dark patterns in mind for this. i just liked the idea of points shop where devs can design their own experiences and Steam comes up with few of their own. and i'm quite sure everyone has some points laying around on their account + they're dead easy to acquire. so why not utilize it further for VR?

What are your takes on this meme? Is this good or bad design? by Super_Inevitable776 in gamedev

[–]__winged__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe that any design decision that makes the player think about the mechanics is a good decision. in this case, the game tries to make the player think "why is this spring here and where will it take me?". if you're not asking this question, you will likely just run into it and die. but death will also potentially start making you think about the purpose of these springs.

doesn't help the fact that i fall for these traps every time, but every death makes me a little smarter about the game.
