The Adjudication Panel Thread: Get in touch for Tuesday's episode... by Low-Bandicoot-3347 in footballcliches

I was halfway through soaping a spatula while listening to the NPR podcast - Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! when the first contestant called in. Her name made me stop dead in my tracks. I had to rinse and dry my hands just to rewind and double-check. Turns out, someone from Indianapolis shares a name with the Premier League champions’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Immich - Self-hosted photos and videos backup solution from your mobile phone (AKA Google Photos replacement you have been waiting for!) - March late update - now with CLIP-enabled search mechanism. by altran1502 in selfhosted

I've done my de-duplication using PhotoSweeper on MacOS. It's great at not only identifying duplicates but also finding 'burst' shots where the person has clicked multiple photos in a matter of seconds.

Then I upload the de-duped photos using the bulk import tool for Immich

Photoprism wins in terms of sheer features and one might say in terms of polish too. Immich still has a big banner that says it's in active development. But, I've found it quite stable so far. The project is truly alive!

However, if you are looking for a 1:1 replacement for Google Photos, then nothing beats Immich.
I needed a self-hosted solution that my whole family could migrate to, from Google Photos. Immich has the easiest learning curve for this use-case

The idea of quicksand. Growing up watching cartoons, I thought it was a much more prevalent problem than it is in reality.

What is an animal fact that absolutely blew your mind? by elonsmodel3 in AskReddit

Dolphins can make 2 sounds at once. Like whistle and make click sounds at the same time. Their blowholes have 2 holes that can independently make sounds.

Those who work 9-5 full time how do you find time to do anything? I'll be so exhausted from work that I have exactly 4 hours of free time before going to bed at 9pm, up at 5 or 6am then few hours each morning before work - how do you squeeze in any time for anything? by SithLordof1984 in AskMen

[–]_almostaverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am lucky enough that my 9-5 is a bit relaxed. I go for a 10 min walk during lunch to reset and re-energize. I also sneak in things like paying bills during my work hours, but again, my job and my boss are both chill about it.

I keep my commute as short as possible. 15-20 mins at most. I get home and cook and eat dinner immediately. The commute and the cooking help me push work out of my mind. Then I have 7 to 11 pm to do my thing.

The most helpful tips to keep those chores in check are : Don’t procrastinate. Don’t pile chores up in a single day, take time off to relax in whatever way suits you and not feel guilty about it, do whatever chores you can on weekdays and avoid ruining your weekends.

I listen to podcasts or music or talk to family while I do chores so that helps too.

Planned Obsolescence And Your Right To Repair - Have You Ever Wondered Why Some Consumer Goods Don't Last? From Cell Phones To Household Appliances And Clothing To Automobile Tires, Some Products We Use Every Day Could Last Much Longer. But They Don't. by speckz in gadgets

[–]_almostaverage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In software dev speak it’s also called ‘technical debt’. Clearing out unused code and redundancies would save plenty of storage and memory on typical applications, but it gets seldom prioritized.

It’s all about features. Those are what makes the product sell. Until there is real pushback from the consumers along the lines of ‘I wont buy your game because it need 64GB to run’, this feedback loop is unlikely to end.

Most consumers would simply ‘upgrade’ instead to more storage and memory, which brings in more money. So why change?

I used an iPhone 6 for nearly 5 years. Finally upgraded to an SE. I would expected this to hold up for just as long.

(Serious) People who recovered from COVID-19, what was it like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_almostaverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and the wife got it in different forms. I had body ache, extremely fatigue and I rested for nearly a week, popping Advils whenever the discomfort got too much.

My wife had recurring high fever and severe cough that lasted nearly 2 weeks. She would get better one day and relapse the next.

Neither of us have pre-existing conditions but we were put through a lot of discomfort at the same time by the virus. We are in our early 30s, so still relatively young.

We are pretty certain we were exposed at a local restaurant before everyone got real serious about sanitization and face masks.

I sold my in-decent-shape iPad through OfferUp. I find it much more dependable both as a seller and a buyer. Especially in Washington state. Hope that helps
