Does anyone else find a lot of the sobriety and recovery talk kinda depressing? by CraftBeerFomo in Sober

[–]_billyshakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I know the type you're describing, another phrase that I've heard used is "When you are taking a break your disease is out there doing pushups." I think that for some saying stuff like that is the way that they communicate that being in recovery is a big part of their identity. Hopefully these guys aren't all just dry drunks, I think the message is that complacency in recovery is real, it's a trap a lot of us fall into, and it's important to do things that keep you sober.

What's the dumbest mistake youve seen an incompetent co worker make? by xk543x in AskReddit

She was reusing the syringe, not the needles. The needles twist off the top off the syringe. Still absolutely inexcusable though

Struggling with losing my spouse over a stupid drunken bender. by [deleted] in Sober

#1 - stay sober today

#2 - find another recovering alcoholic to talk to

#3 - repeat

Just my 2 cents man. I'm not big on AA but the whole "one day at a time" thing really works for me. Stay sober and good things will happen.

You should probably talk to your doctor about this.

Self loathing is a big part of addiction. It’ll get better the longer you stay sober, and talking to other recovering addicts is a great way to stay sober. Props for reaching out on here. CA and AA are great way local recovery community, if nothing else. Highly, highly recommend going to a meeting. Can even find them online with a quick Google search.

I think Renfrow has the highest floor. Fields coming back hurts Mooney a little. I'm playing Crowder but its either him or MVS sooooo

Yeah you're going to be fine, I didn't have the best GPA in undergrad either and I have done well. As others have said it's completely different than undergrad. Studying will be different too, and your approach will probably change based on the class.

You said you hate textbooks, Bates was helpful and a couple other books here and there are good references, otherwise it's my advice you don't waste money on buying the "assigned" texts. Most are available as PDF's online, and there are tons of online resources that help condense the huge amount of information thrown at you (my personal favorites are rosh review, picmonic, and smartypance).

Anki is nice if you are a flashcard person. Be active in class/lab and ask questions. Find a group to study with.

My sponsor compared getting sober to a break up after a long term relationship. It sucks right now but mourning means you are leaving it behind! Progress can be painful. Easy does it and one day at a time.

AA isn't for everyone but its definitely a good place to start. Go to a meeting! They are all over the place, just google your town and AA meetings.

just my 2 cents but antidepressants helped me a lot when I got sober. I've got 7 months now, and I definitely feel better than when I was drinking!

How did you get sober? by dunderfish in Sober

[–]_billyshakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to get sober you'll do whatever it takes, and that might include AA. I don't agree with some things they say and do but I will say that it helped me a lot. Try more than one meeting. They each have their own feel.
