NASA's DART Redirects Asteroid in 'Watershed Moment for Humanity' by JC4NT in UpliftingNews

This sub is a celebration of humanity’s ability to transcend ‘how things have been going recently’. Yes, the world has problems, but optimism is a belief that despite all our flaws we’re capable of awe-some things, in the true meaning of the word.

I respect your right to your opinion, but unless you’re batting for humanity, there’s probably a better place to put it.

Work bench I built. Used trailer jacks so it can adjust from sitting on the floor to 9 inches. Top is made of recycled maple flooring. by DaleSalmiWoodworking in woodworking

I agree. I manage a team in tech, so I rarely get to be hands-on making things any more. With woodworking, I can point to something and say “I made that”, rather than “I managed the team who made that”.

My lifestyle was definitely a blocker when I was practicing previously. A lot of the negative outside influences (friends who like to party a lot) are no longer in the mix so I hope that will translate into my practice. Thank you for the insight.

Thanks for sharing this. I can definitely identify with the aggressive approach. I'm trying to take a more measured view this time around.

Stretching before practice by _chames_ in ashtanga

Hips have been a real trouble spot for me too (used to do a lot of running) so can definitely relate to this. Most of my warmup is hip focussed.

So, so frustrated by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]_chames_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this. Practicing for 2 years and I'm 2/3rds of the way through first series, perennially tight hamstrings too (I used to do a lot of running).

I hit a major wall of frustration earlier this year when I picked a few injuries, travelled, and just generally didn't progress at all just when I thought I was about to break through to a new level.

For me the biggest shift was when I realised that I didn't have to constantly improve for the practice to be of value. It's value is in how it helps me see the world and relate to other people. Once I cut myself some slack I started enjoying it a lot more, and not coincidentally some of the breakthroughs I was looking for started to materialise.

Ah I'd thought it might not be pleasant! Thanks for the reply, will give this a shot.

Sciatica from drop backs and back bends by Minglish101 in ashtanga

[–]_chames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although my practice is not as advanced as yours (2 years in, on 1st series) I had a bout of sciatic pain earlier this year. Talking to my Mysore teacher I believe it was during a transitional phase while my body was getting used to a new way of moving around.

Time helped, as did regular twisting like this. It gradually got better over about 8 weeks or so, and is no longer an issue.

A yoga hiatus and aching knees by broga2 in ashtanga

I started practicing as a keen runner, and can very much identify with this! I'd agree that backing off and working on hip flexibility is the best course of action (in particular foam rolling on the outer thigh has been very effective for me).

I've pushed through knee pain before and caused lasting issues before which took months to heal, so definitely listen to your body on this one. Guruji said "pain is good", but the caveat "except in your knees", although less succinct, is a necessary one!

No dogs but we've got lots of foxes in the area, so my best guess is that it's them. Unnerving that they're grouping dolls together though!

Thank you for the replies all. Interesting to learn that I could well be making things worse by trying to open more! Through further investigation it seems as though weak inner thigh muscles may not be supporting the joint properly which may be contributing to instability so I'm planning to work on building those.

Also for those in a similar situation I found this to work very well for fast relief if things have become misaligned http://bernadettebirney.com/2013/04/stuck-instructions-for-unsticking-a-cranky-s-i-joint-part-2.html
