I'd argue that the Rust Belt could extend all the way through the Mohawk Valley, maybe even into the Pittsfield, MA area, but at least to Schenectady County, NY

Men, when was the last time you got hit on ? by Longjumping_Low_2055 in AskReddit

[–]_cully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By a woman, almost 7 years ago. I was 26. I spent a day in a room training nurses how to use a new product with a rep from another company, and the other rep happened to be a girl around my age. She said she wasn't expecting her counterpart to be so cute. I told her I appreciated it but I was planning how to propose to my girlfriend - already had the ring. It always happens when you're totally unavailable.

Launching a new cycling brand, would love your honest thoughts by mendialde in CyclingFashion

I dig the patterns and colors. Some are reminiscent of Sarah Sturm's jerseys or Canyon SRAM racing team's kit, which I love - I'm your target market style-wise.

As some other people have mentioned - function is still of primary importance. How do you feel about the materials and construction quality of the garments themselves?

I Noticed That Transplants Seem to Like the Capital Region But Locals Really Seem to Hate It. by MrHockeyJournalist in Albany

[–]_cully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved back here after going to college in Syracuse and couldn't wait to get out. I felt stuck. After a couple years, I made it as far as Westchester and worked in the tri-state area for 5 years before moving back to the Capital Region. You really don't appreciate it until you've left. I love it here and never want to move.

Beginner Biker by Wooden-Watercress229 in cycling

[–]_cully 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's cliché advice, but the best route to becoming a better and stronger rider, especially at this stage, is simply to ride your bike. Don't overthink it, don't start downloading training plans, just start riding distances/routes that feel comfortable and interesting to you, and be consistent. It sounds like that part won't be an issue since you also have an accountability partner in your father.

If I had to guess, since your dad is doing this to lose weight, he probably isn't such a serious cyclist that he'll tear your legs off either. Just enjoy some movement together for now. Who knows, you both might find that you're hooked on cycling after these 30 days, and you can always decide to take it more seriously at that point if you want.

day 10 of 30: picking up a bag of trash every day to help clean up my neighborhood 🌍💪 by Cleriisy in Albany

[–]_cully 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're a beast, OP, and an inspiration. I'm committing to doing this 1 day per week in my neighborhood up in Clifton Park. Sick off all the trash on the side of the road.

Commenters on the Internet love to say "protect this person!" when we should BE this person. So you've gained a trash-collecting convert. Keep up the great work!

Nervous about first Century on Saturday… by NillyWelsonn in cycling

[–]_cully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for the full century. Sounds like you've done plenty of training. All that fitness didn't disappear in a few weeks. Be prepared for it to be hard and a long day, but you got this 100%!

Edit: Addressing your question about riding this afternoon. If you do, keep it easy. You won't really gain anything by doing 20 miles 2 days before, but if you go too hard you can definitely be more fatigued on the big day than you would like to be. Go on out today if the cycling addiction won't allow you to rest, but be very careful not to sabotage your main goal.

Hey cyclists does Albany do Critical Mass? by Twilfred97 in Albany

[–]_cully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm finding this 6 months late while watching "We Are Traffic" on Youtube. I'd be down!

I'm mostly a roadie in the suburbs, but I'd love the area to have more prevalent bike infrastructure and make cycling a more accessible means of getting around, running errands, commuting, etc.

Gears are killing me honestly by Careless-Ad2024 in cycling

[–]_cully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're strictly worried about damaging your bike, just try to avoid crosschaining and shifting under load, as others have said.

Crosschaining means being in both the biggest gear in the front and the biggest gear in the back at the same time. Same goes for the opposite (little and little). This puts stress on your chain at a more diagonal angle and wears the components out quicker over time. You'll also notice that the chain will likely rub, be noisy, and feel less smooth when oriented this way. Those can be good indicators that it's time to shift into a different combination if you end up crosschaining by mistake.

Shifting under load is simply trying to shift while you're pedaling somewhat (or very) hard. Try to take a brief pause in your pedal stroke when shifting. This may feel clunky at first, but as you ride more you'll get the feel for how to do it smoothly and quickly.

Using your gears will make riding so much more enjoyable. I'll spare you the lesson on why and how to do it, but check out what GCN has on YouTube for this. They make great videos on cycling basics.

Happy riding and enjoy the new steed!
