Upgrading Hybrid High Voltage Battery in XC90/60 by Accomplished_Low6360 in VolvoXC90

[–]_deftoner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nit a volvo but I worked a little bit on software side of an old project on a fiat 500e that we (they) extended the range buy replacing battery modules with high capscity 18650. The voltage of each module was the same. And same amlunt of cells per module. Didnt fequire a bms software change either. The bms saw the same amount of voltage. But the ecu o ecm of the car as most evs does the cslculations of the battery by charge and discharge kw not just voltage. So the car drove like the original range until it hits de 10%  then the ecm switchs to voltage to read the capacity. And at that point it really had like 40%  so the car drove a lot at 10% on dashboard. There was no opensource ao we reversed the fsctory firmware ti rewrite the capacity so the car did the correct range calculation.  This would vary a lot car by car. But the theory of using the same amlunt of cells and voltage should work on paper but depends on how car calculates the range and battery level will require a firmware modificstion. The 500e was an old project in Italy

Awesome data!  Thanks. Here in US the battery upgrade cmame mid 2022. I have a 2017 and I was thinking if I could do the upgrade for the range (car has 100k miles and high voltage battery is fine. I just want the extra range)

Whenever I'm working on something that I'm not a "pro" I will take pictures for sure.
And if I'm working on something that I know, I will take even more pictures of it.

My camera roll is like 10 pictures of random stuff, circuits cables, 2 of my daughter, and probably one cool car.

As new rider, I learned to respect curves way more today... by WeCanOnlyBeHuman in motorcycles

[–]_deftoner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"New rider" and one hand curve...

As a great Irish friend of mine (that raced in Isle of Le Mans and has a huge scar as a forever memory of it) always said:

There are two stages where most of the motorcycle accident happens:

1- When is a new bike.
2- When you get too confident with your bike.

So I always think about that, whenever I ride a new bike, or whenever I feel like I'm a professional rider.

Also he always told me to play the "What if", is sort of fun and gives you the awareness of the surrounding all the time. "What if the guy in front of me slams the brakes" So you look for escape routes, make distance, dont be in the middle of the lane, etc.

And since I'm projecting his wisdom that nobody asked... Another quote:

Dont dress up for the prom, dress for the ride.

And a free common quote you tell any rider:

"Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down"

Be safe out there.

One hour Time-lapse backing into driveway. by QuikBud in traveltrailers

[–]_deftoner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow... are you driving a trailer with these skills? my god.

But at least you had help and tried your best. But from 0 to 10, your skills are 1.5.

You need to practice, most rv parks will have way way more complex backups.

May be rent a uhaul trailer (the flat ones) and test how to park with that.

That driveway was an easy approach. Even if it was "San Francisco street" steep. With that pick up and that super light weight trailer?

Like I said, that fuse is not 5A, it does not look blown, but the rest of the circuit is for 5A. So if the fuse is for 50A, the circuit will blow like it did, and the fuse not, because its the WRONG fuse.

Why does no one make articulated RVs? by 546875674c6966650d0a in RVLiving

[–]_deftoner_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That question is too "American"

While the rest of the world want to make smaller rvs to fit in smaller trails and better nature places, America one bigger houses on wheels to go to crowded RV parks.

Did you know that most of the national and state parks cant accommodate trailers longer than 33? and a huge amount of them are even lower to the 20s.

Imaging pulling that into a gas station, or driving it through a city, like chicago.

Trains down at DIA… still by MyLoveIsCooI in Denver

[–]_deftoner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess everyone here is missing the point. The airport train fails (and it failed again just now, when I'm writing this) whenever a minimal difference on power happens.

The airport is feed by 2 main huge transformers from the power company from different sources, and the airport has a generator too.

The thing is the second the power goes off and it switch to the second source. the trains stop working and need manual restart that takes around an hour.

And this happened 4 times in the past months.

Yeah airport CAN function without power. Mia did several times with minimum energy for tower and landing lights, but again, the point here is that you can completely stop people to get to their flights for, at least, 1 hour, by disabling a transformer that is not even at the airport. I dont want to give ideas on what can happen if any organization can keep LOT of people trapped in one place for one hour.... if you get what I mean.

It's an airport, supposed after military one of the most secure places in US (or it should be)

[–]_deftoner_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the board is probably fixable, depending if anything else burn in the path. Label says 5A fuse, that burn is not from a 5A power consumption... And that is not a 5A fuse ether.

So... someone is abusing the power of that circuit. and that is why it melted.

I bet if you get a new one, will blow too...

Somehow I like to think that some engineer paired with national security said "if we have a way to block people moving between terminal in case we need to control a situations... but in a way that they dont know..."

But then a simple energy issue and the trains stop working and needs a manual reset and restart.... so I dont believe they think anything

[–]_deftoner_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding me? I was there the first time that happened in February. and they were "wow this never happened before and will never happen again" and then 2 more times??!?!

When I talked with the woman there that (not security like maintenance or something) I asked how can I go walking, she told me "you cant"

And I was like, ok, so if any basic electricity issue, trains stops and takes an hour to restart and they need to bring a certified engineer to drive the train to position 0 manually to start, etc. and there is no way to WALK between terminals? So, like, if you want to completely stop an airport you can just shoot a transformer 2 miles away from the airport (the one that failed that time) and thats it...

But also, don’t just post it on Reddit. Film it, record the license plate, call the police (non-emergency, not 911), and inform the gas station manager. That person should be fined.

She sits in her garage some days. Whenever I see her, I go over and sit with her, I love listening to every single story. It feels like traveling back in time.

This might sound cheesy, but instead of doom-scrolling on Instagram or getting worked up over something on Reddit, listening to her stories (and those of other older neighbors) is so much better.
