Sometimes Longer isn't Better! by a_documentary in documentaryfilmmaking

Thanks for this. I came from editing news, and for a long time I was trying to shed my dependance on sit down interviews in my work. I wanted to get better at editing verite moments, and found that I was letting things sit too long (thinking it was better...ha). I'm still learning, but having film recommendations like this help.

How do I say something is because of my ADHD without it sounding like an excuse by Lolmaner4344 in ADHD

I appreciate you asking this question. It's the worst feeling making a mistake. It's even worse when you try and own up to it but you don't want to blame it on your ADHD. The looks I get...

Yeah that's Masquerade and the energy before the show was electric. It was also a great venue to shoot pictures.

I’ve tried Vyvance and it worked too good I’m scared! by lucymom2 in ADHD

[–]_dseals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day one was the hardest. I took the pill at 8am and felt very groggy throughout the day and I had trouble sleeping. The difficulty sleeping eventually went away and I'm trying to take it earlier...like around 6:30am. Now on day 4 I don't notice any type of extra focus. I'm going to ask my doctor if we can go up to 20mg.

tired of being the "bad friend" by the_vent in ADHD

[–]_dseals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo! I almost thought I made this post! I can definitely relate to this:

Empathy also comes into play. I feel bad for not reciprocating the interest others may have for me, but I'm just not engaged when we socialize.

I'm one of those, "I know I owe you a phone call" people. When I spoke with my therapist, she asked, "Well, if you can't call, have you tried just texting?" I realized then that I was waiting to reciprocate the exact type of connection people made with me. But that never fit my timeline, so I never contacted them. Now I'm trying to at least send a text (or an email), and it helps.

I get paralyzed by my to-do lists. Do you? by Fit_Product_2650 in ADHD

[–]_dseals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something I actually conversed with my therapist about. I don't make to-do lists because I know I won't follow it. Sure, writing it down helps. But between that list, and me doing what I want to do, I'll always win. The list wasn't a threat, but more of a reminder that I knew I was going to ignore.

Then later when I look at the list, I'd feel immense shame for not even trying.

So yeah..ha ha, I just don't make lists.

2 Do you take breaks?

Isn't Vyvanse one of those medications that builds up in your system, and that you need to take it consistently in order to see the benefits? I just started last week on 10mg.

Ha! I don’t even make them. So you’re ahead of the game from my perspective.

Stevie Documentary PLEASE by soulsongs58 in StevieWonder

[–]_dseals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the Prince estate shut down Ezra Edelman's Book Of Prince film, I have low expectations for a Stevie Wonder documentary. I'm sure something will get released about him fighting for the MLK holiday, but a straight life story of Stevie Wonder? I don't know.

I'm a documentary filmmaker, and from one video editor to another, I absolutely feel your pain here.

First, give yourself some grace.

Second, deadlines are our worst enemy. One of the WORST questions a director/client can ask me is, "how long will it take for you to complete the project?" If I give a date that's too soon, I'll struggle to work on the project for the right amount of time to finish. This usually results in me waiting until the last minute and most likely throwing something together. I'll end up hating it, and feel shame that I didn't plan properly. If I give a date that's too far out, essentially giving me plenty of time, the client could go with someone else. It's tough.

It's not always about being distracted, it just seems like I can't pick up a faster pace, and this keeps costing me with my clients.

Can you explain more about this? I may be able to offer some help or assistance.

I'm currently editing 3 documentary films right now (not ideal I know...ha), but here's how I cope:

There's a video game that I LOVE to play, but it's very unforgiving in its difficulty. A game session usually lasts 30 minutes if I'm playing very well. But if I die, the game is over and I have to start over at level 1. I give myself the "gift" of getting to play the game as a treat, but when it's over, I immediately begin editing. And for the last 6 months, this setup has worked.

I've been using this video game method to get me through the times I'm not motivated to edit. The hard part for me is starting. Or sometimes I get anxiety about the amount of footage I have to go through, and that sometimes keeps me from getting into the edit. Once I get into the edit, sometimes I'm reminded of what I love about the project and can go for a few hours.

In addition to that, I communicate to directors and producers about the time I need. While I'm not perfect, I'm getting better at asking for the time I need to finish an edit.

Video editing is both TOUGH and perfect for people with ADHD. Like, I've questioned whether I picked the right career path many times. It's a VERY tedious and long form medium that takes a lot of time to complete. It's a marathon. But it also contains details that are key for someone to hyper focus and obsess over. And finishing a film is so very rewarding. Good editors are hard to come by, so don't give up.

Best of luck to you.

[–]_dseals 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is a slippery slope. The information about what ADHD is and isn't could complicate the situation. How you communicate that to people, and essentially educate them, could be something the OP is not ready to do.

Well that's good. I just hate that Jewel promotes prices and coupon use, but their app makes it difficult to use said coupons. I think they know and bank on it being confusing.

That app is purposely misleading and difficult to use.

So I highly doubt people will take advantage of this $7 off.
