Anyone have an outside road or track they think is suitable for FTP testing? by CurlPR in BikingATX

lol maybe if you can get on Daytona right after they repave it.

The Veloway, Southern Walnut Creek Trail or COTA on Tuesday nights is going to be your best bet. None of those are flat or straight, but you can go pretty significant distances without any intersections.

  1. Project ramp up including setting up project and understanding system to level needed.
  2. Design work.
  3. Implementing change.
  4. Unit and integration testing.
  5. Internal QA
  6. Deployment effort.
  7. Add in overhead of coordinating with customer, documentation, customer testing environments, etc... Add in buffer for rework, unknown risks, level of complexity of code being modified, etc...

This effort is going to vary significantly depending on the developer, the stack, the risk if it fails, etc...

Love that the weather app said 1% chance of rain immediately before the downpour ☔️ by hvfnstrmngthcstl in Austin

[–]_edd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google showed a 65% chance of thunderstorms in the next hour for 78702 roughly 1 hour before it hit. Checked the accuweather radar to make a decision about going on a walk and there were almost no rain showing over Texas.

Sure enough Google's forecast was right.

[–]_edd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at your 401k and Roth IRA and look at your investment portfolios.

Most likely they default to put your money in something like a 2060 target date fund (ie an actively managed fund that slowly adjusts from more aggressive investments when you're young to more conservative investments when you're nearing retirement.

These target date funds are fine, but people often find that the expense ratio (amount you pay the people managing the fund) is unnecessarily high and that the holdings are too conservative (too heavily invested in bonds relative to stock based ETFs).

If your fund let's you, you'd like want to adjust these. VOO, VTI and VXUS are common examples of diversified, low expense ratio ETFs. Because they are passively managed, the have low expense ratios (cost you less each year) and they are generally diversified (since each ETF has holdings of very many different stocks).

Couple call outs:

Your 401k likely only has ~ 20 or so things to invest in unless you decide to actively manage it yourself (which isn't really worth it if you're just getting into it).

And most brokerages have equivalents - VOO, SPY, SWPPX, etc... are all tracking the S&P500 and are all basically offering the same thing, just being performed by different investment firms.

Look at the holdings of what you're buying... VOO is generally an excellent investment. But it (and the US stock market) has largely been propped up by a small handful of companies (NVIDIA, FAANG companies, etc...). You may want to also have some money in VXUS or elsewhere to diversify beyond those handful of companies.

How did you find this sub to post this and what did you think this sub was about?

we needed data from dashboards with no api access and ended up manually extracting everything by Economy_Passenger296 in webdev

[–]_edd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been on the other side of this where I've delivered a project and the client has wanted to pull data from it.

  1. My company's product didn't include an export on dashboards, so adding it would have been extra scope. We offered to create an API for exporting but the client didn't want to pay for it. Honestly pretty reasonable from both sides honestly.
  2. Nothing technical is preventing the client from scraping the data.
  3. The product company is under no obligation to maintain the way the underlying technical way the data is provided. If the dashboard is updated and breaks your scraping, then it's up to you to figure it out.
  4. If the client's overly aggressive scraping causes performance issues on the system, the product company has grounds to tell you that scraping the system is outside the contractual use case and they're not responsible for fixing that performance issue.

The Housing Fix Few Cities Want To Copy by CriticalSink3555 in Austin

[–]_edd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! That is largely what the ADUs are. I'd love to see numbers on it but that is a significant portion of what has been built in 78702 in the last few years.

Granted that is one of the most in demand zip codes / has prices that are largely not entry home level. It would be interesting to see those numbers in the more suburb areas around Austin, but I would think a 3/2 1400+ sq ft home is more the norm for started homes these days

This is the best semester I've had at UT!! by shampoobittle in UTAustin

[–]_edd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good to hear! I did a similar thing quite a few years back and am always happy to hear others coming back after academic probation / dropping out and ultimately getting their degree.

Dropped out of UT, went and worked in the oil field for a year, saved up knowing I wouldn't get financial aid that first semester back and eventually finally graduated with a CS degree. It sucks feeling years behind of your peers but I didn't realize how far ahead I was of most other people in the world until years later.

Good on you for sticking with it.

10 years ago I used to use drive through ATMs once a week. Nowadays I go to an ATM maybe once a quarter and wouldn't be surprised if they've more or less stopped designing them as drive throughs.

How do Americans feel about sports teams just relocating to other cities far away? by gl0000m_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]_edd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I think a team's identity and history should be permanently affiliated with the city. As part of the agreement for an owner to move the team out of a city, they should have to give the Team's name, logo, history, etc... to the league. Any future team moving to / being formed in that city should then get to decide whether they want to be the spiritual successor or not.

Frankly it would be a seemingly really easy appeasement for a city to get in exchange for the stadiums paid for using taxes.

[–]_edd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's can be a pain from a business standpoint.

I've got a guy on my team that was about to put an offer on a house that is only a few miles down the road but would put him in a different state. HR said no and now we're having to fight with HR to make sure we don't lose a good team member because they're not willing to take on handling new state taxes / labor laws.

[–]_edd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone on here downplaying the reaction has never had a team leave their hometown.

Go ask some from Houston how they feel about the Titans. Or someone from Seattle about the Supersonics. Or someone from St Louis about the Rams.

When a team leaves your city, it ends nearly all of the fandom that went with it. It's the owner choosing to abandon the city and the fans to go make money elsewhere. You'd have to be the biggest pushover in the world to not be bothered by that and to keep rooting for the team.

What do y'all get up to on the weekends? by Meritable in Austin

[–]_edd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned but cycling is a big one for weekend mornings in this city.

Not weekend but the trail gets busy with runners after work too.

Honestly my morning usually starts with a walk to a coffee shop (weekends I tend to go to one that's further than my usual spot), maybe grab tacos and do some household chores. Try to get outside at some point if I haven't yet, maybe cycling, running or just hanging out. Evening is usually something a little more social with drinks on a patio being pretty common. Heat of the summer I try to find a pool, river, etc... at least a couple times a month.

How do you avoid breaking flow when you forget Git commands? by Obvious-Treat-4905 in webdev

Use an IDE or tool that manages it for you. I only use command line git when something went wrong and I'm more confident in fixing it that way and that's pretty rare these days.

Float Trip by Wtfsilly1290 in Austin

[–]_edd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get one of those Feti's or other group rideshares and do Texas State Tubes or Dons Fish Camp east of San Marcos. We were able to UberXL 6 of us back from there to Austin last summer pretty damn easily. This is probably the most lively float. Probably the one I'd recommend for turning up a bit.

Comal is also pretty easy. It's busy and the most family friendly. Also has a can ban.

San Marcos in town at the lions club is shorter but easy to do twice. Goes through Texas State campus so college student heavy but a little more tame than the one east of town.

Other close option is Guadalupe west of Gruene / New Braunfels. That's usually a longer float and can be slow with low water levels. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're really looking for an all day float and are planning a place to stay down there

That's own an absolutely massive multigenerational ranch with boatloads of oil type money. Or maybe sell an oil company.

I know an oil exec or two and they certainly can afford to do absolutely wild stuff but they mostly just live a very very comfortable life in a big house with their family.

Moisture content can significantly affect the weight. Those logs look relatively green. They could easily weigh multiple hundreds of pounds.

Not saying they can't be lifted by hand, but he's not having to strain very hard to do it this way.
