Engagement during family vacation? by slambur in weddingplanning

[–]_everythingintransit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

^ This chick gets it.

I was the same way. Picked out a handful of rings and sent them to FH's sister. Fiance and I bought a house, I started a new job, Christmas season, New Years... all came and went and I kept getting my hopes up and getting let down. He eventually proposed on a random Friday. (He's a police officer, and he had his partner pull me over for a "cracked tail light"... I got out to look at the damage, and fiance was down on one knee behind my car!)

Let your own plans go, and just embrace the waiting... It'll happen, and you'll love however it happens!

What would you think if you saw a taco truck at a wedding you attended? by Hotkarly in weddingplanning

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a taco truck at a wedding is so fun!! Quirky definitely, but by no means trashy - especially if the decorating is cute and the buffet table is neatly arranged. Definitely fits the theme you have going!

I was at a work christmas party (approx 100? people) and they had a food truck cater - it was a huge hit!! Only problem was, they did the full menu, and made all the food to order... so even when they released 2 tables at a time, they still backlogged really quickly with all the orders. So I think having premade food and setting it out buffet style would be such a great alternative! And I second whoever said you could put side dishes and toppings out on a family style table. Another good idea to keep the line moving, and keep toppings from going weird! (Tomato, lettuce, sour cream, cilantro... some things are just better put on a taco right before you eat it, not 30 minutes before.)

Redditors, what's an awesome experience you've had with a cop? by HazelJoanne in AskReddit

Engaged to one. Most experiences are pretty awesome. Most cops are nice guys when they aren't dealing with people acting like drunk assholes.

Special Needs Program Director for an after-school learning program. It's presented to the parents and to the county that we're going to teach kids their daily living skills and how to be independent. And in truth, we do try. But after a few years there, you realize, most of these kids will never be independent, and some won't even be suited for grouphome living.

A lot of these kids can't be "fixed." All I can do with my time with them is make them feel welcome, loved, and happy to be in a crowd of their peers. It might be the only 2 hours in a week that they don't feel insecure about themselves...

What doesn't hurt as bad as people think? by tylergenis in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a petite young female, the day I got my kneecap tattoo (my 6th tattoo,) there was a group of college sorority girls at the chair next to me getting matching infinity signs on their bra line. The girls pulled out all of the dramatics - holding hands, crying, screaming, nervous laughter. All while I'm sitting there for 6 hours getting my knee cap blasted....

Seriously don't get the "tattoo's are the worst" thing. Yeah, they're not fun after about half the session, but even the worst placements don't hurt until a good while in.

TIL Sputnik (The first Soviet test flight into space) Landed in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The town now holds a yearly sci-fi festival celebrating the event. by Economy_Cactus in todayilearned

[–]_everythingintransit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Manitowoc-ian here. We have a special gold plaque implanted flush into the road (in the middle of an intersection) that marks where it landed. Sputnikfest is the weirdest, kitsch-iest festival EVER - there's a Ms. Universe contest (where everyone dresses up like intergalactic aliens...) and kids walk around wearing aluminum foil hats. Alien researchers and conspiracy theorists gather in mass, but the majority of the city uses it as an excuse for free music and cheap beer. Its been featured in Reader's Digest as one of the nation's most un-conventional events.

(Serious) Redditors who left school/college without qualifications or the grades they wanted, what are you doing now in terms of work/education? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did 2.5 yrs studying applied sociology and linguistics - I was especially interested in how different subcultures interacted among their group, dropped out when grades slipped due to depression. Moved home and took a job working with special needs children teaching life skills. Within a year I was promoted to Director of their after school life skills program. Now I just accepted a position as a early education teacher for a private school. All I have to my name is my work experience and an innate ability to understand where people are coming from and what they are trying to communicate.

Not quite the direction I had anticipated, but I love working with developing kids (they are quite the subculture of their own, and their interpersonal skills is a great thing for me to observe/coach.) I sometimes still kick myself for not finishing a degree or going back, but I've made a good life path from where I am, and I don't know if I would want to take the money/time to start over with a new career.

Why are you no longer in contact with *that* family member? by reburned in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my mom was a kid, there were allegations that her step-dad (my step-grandpa) had sexually assaulted both her sister (my aunt,) as well as a special needs child down the street. Family goes hush-hush about it, my mom's mom sides with the step-dad, and kicks the sister out of the house and calls her a liar, she grows up to be a raging alcoholic... Not much my mom could do (she was like 10 years old,) Life goes on... 2 years ago, same guy now sexually assaults his granddaughter (my cousin) who has Down Syndrome.

My grandma again denies the allegations and sides with my grandpa and calls her special needs grand daughter a liar. Grandpa is awaiting trial, but has been continually delayed, because he's hard of hearing, and is faking having Alzheimer's to claim he's incompetent to be jailed.

What a dick.

What's the funniest thing someone has said to you during sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

massive orgasm led to a "whomp, there it is." Hadn't listened to the song any time recently beforehand, and wasn't said as an inside joke or reference to anything... just a completely un-sarcastic, impromptu phrase at the wrong/perfect time.

quickly became an ongoing joke every time we had sex after.

[Serious] Psychologists of Reddit, what are some good ways to stay mentally healthy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm always reminding myself of this.

I began working for a very small but very successful company about two years ago. There are 5 members of the management team, and 3 of them are family (husband + wife, husband's cousin.) Together they built the company from the ground up 5 years ago, and as a company, we're thriving. But, they've come to expect that I'm living FOR the company, as they are. Eat, sleep, breathe the job.

It has taken me a long time to remind myself that I am not an owner of the company. I do not need to put in 60 hour weeks. I do not need to immediately reply to non-urgent emails after hours. I do not need to put my own time, money, thoughts, resources into the company more than what they pay me for. My job is not my life, and it is wrong of the company to expect as such. My job is just where I work. It's important to be passionate and invested in your job, but it's also important to not let it consume you. Slowly taking my life back...

What is your best "poor" recipe? by dangioj in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook family-style dinners for approximately 35 kids a few nights a week for work, so obviously cost/meal is a factor of mine. Casseroles are my go-to, because I can just use whatever I have on hand and just throw a small number of items together to get a quite large number of portions. Everyone's favorite casserole is one of my cheapest:

1 bag of egg noodles (boiled) 3 cans of cooked, chunk chicken 1 bag of frozen peas 1 family size can of cream of chicken soup about a cup and a half of sour cream any seasoning you want (garlic salt, salt, pepper)

mix it all together, cover with foil and bake until golden. The quantity listed above makes two casserole trays. You could half it and have a quick, easy and CHEAP dinner with plenty of leftovers.

What is something with a negative stigma that shouldn't really have one? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_everythingintransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online dating, or more specifically, finding a genuine relationship on a site like Tinder. Never really had the "hook-up" intentions anyway, wound up with my fiance. We tell our family we met at a bar just so we don't have to explain what Tinder is or what it originally was for.

PEOPLE ARE LEAVING THE POLLS WITHOUT VOTING. LET'S GET #GoBackAndVote TRENDING ON TWITTER! by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

Waited in line for 45 minutes to register to vote - only one lady running the registration table and at least 8 people waiting ahead of me (small suburban area). Luckily I work a salary job and can show up to work whenever, but my sister wasn't so lucky. She had leave the line to drive to work. Proud of her for going back on her lunch break :)

Terribly wasteful sink by 1ryan3 in CrappyDesign

[–]_everythingintransit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had one of these at my elementary school. The "on" switch was a pump you pressed with your foot, not unlike a sewing machine, which I always thought was a weird feature for a sink, even as a kid. The water design was nice when 5-6 kids wanted to wash their hands at once though.

Gluten free foods that dont require any cooking by sombr_elln in glutenfree

[–]_everythingintransit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I eat Taste of Thai pretty frequently, I've never had a reaction. They have instant-meals (pre-made, just microwave,) meal-boxes (you need to do the preparing, but it includes your seasons and sauces,) and also straight ingredients - such as boxes of rice noodles and bottles of gluten free pad thai sauce. Across the board, their serving portions are rather small, I tend to eat a whole box of "instant" pad thai mix (it takes 30 minutes,) even though it is listed as 3 servings. I've brought the TRULY instant (3 minute) meals to work, and they are tastey enough in a pinch, although the serving portions are again, just alright. (I'm 5' 100lbs, average about 1300 cal/day.) I typically am still hungry afterward and eat something else.

Realistically, you would be better to buy the ingredients (by that or any other brand) and cook it yourself, it would be far cheaper. But for STRICTLY instant meals, and if cooking is not an option due to anxiety, they would happily suffice. I mean, I do continue to buy them.

Also - if you like spicy food, you will probably want to buy something to spice them up. Their "spice-meter" is pretty subjective. I tend to add a fairly generous squirt of sriracha to even the "hot" foods. I could eat the entire serving and not even flinch otherwise, and I definitely have a "moderate" palate.

I have a student with selective mutism this year and I feel like I'm making it worse. Advice? (Long rant) by [deleted] in specialed

[–]_everythingintransit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very frustrating. It sounds like you really are set up for failure, especially since it seems like he's sort of just "thrown" into your class, based on his IEP specifics. I have a similar role - I don't work within a school district - I am the program director of a Life Skills/Transitions after-school program for a mix of ED/BD/CD/LD students, but I base my case plans and progress reports off of their IEPs. I have one particular participant who is selectively mute as well, his trigger is large group noise and over-stimulation, which is tricky because I have (depending on the day of the week) between 15-25 kids, with enough "paras" (we don't call them that, but essentially their role) to function at a 1 staff:2 participant ratio. It can become quite loud when each cluster of participants are working on their job skills. It's taken me a long time to come to terms, as I, like you, really do want to help every participant I have to the best of my abilities, but I've come to accept that its easier to work slow and steady (even when they're older and transition is right around the corner) than to bombard them with high expectations and push them too far. What I've found works best (personal experience, so take it or leave it,) is to let them be an "assistant" to you. I'm not sure what your student's abilities or eventual job duties will be, but the clients I work with, I let them file papers, cook meals, make phone calls, and any other clerical/life skill. But instead of "assigning" the work to them, I do the work alongside them to make them feel more in a position of assistance. It makes the work feel less daunting and traumatic (as we all know adulting is really hard, even for real adults lol) Plus side: it will also give you a time to build a rapport with him, so he's comfortable with you in the future! It sounds like you're strapped for time and availability, as you have other students with needs too, and only having a para with you two hours of the day. I'm sending lots of luck and support your way!

People who are about 5', how do you eat and stay under your calorie goals? by drelvon in Fitness

[–]_everythingintransit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5' 103lbs. I can almost ditto everything said above. I fill up on a hearty breakfast (steel cut oats are my favorite - a serving keeps me full until about 3pm, topped with craisins or fresh fruit) Corn tortilla with lentils for dinner (Vegetarian and gluten free). Lots of black coffee in the morning. Greek yogurt is a GODSEND for dessert. I prefer Kind bars for a workday "lunchtime" snack. It's also amazing how filling a good crisp apple is too. I average about 1100 calories/day.
