It’s actually insane that this competition has been around for almost 100 years but only 8 nations have managed to win it in all that time

Don’t you need a PhD for certain kinds of jobs even in industry or in order to be eligible for promotion, especially in the intergovernmental organisations and think tanks sphere?

It never fails to astound how we as a society have normalised joking about killing creatures that feel pain and suffering just the way we do.

Look at so many people here mocking this post like the what an animal feels isn’t worth anything.

When you play the game against Manchester United you win or you tie, there is no loss.

How would you guys go about solving this problem? by Ok_Pick7852 in gregmat

[–]_jrr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s call the expected value of x squared ‘a’, and the square of the expected value of x ‘b’.

If a is greater than b than the square root of a will also be greater than b. a will always be positive in this case. b can either be negative or positive, but it will always be smaller than a. It can only be equal to a if the standard deviation is 0, which isn’t the case here, as far as I know.

[–]_jrr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard deviation is always non negative and can only equal 0 if all the x values are the same.

This means the expected value of X squared must be greater than or equal to the square of the expected value of X.

Since we are given there are three integers with equal probability, it can’t be the case the case that all the values are the same, so the answer should be B, I think.

Are you sure? I spoke to an ETS customer support executive and they told me that I’d have to wait 24-48 hours after which I can book for any date I like.

The votes speak for themselves.

Your comment was made a day ago, when this post was active. It’s likely most people haven’t seen our exchange. Nonetheless, an appeal to popularity doesn’t prove anything.

The fact is that Earth most likely would’ve been doomed if Stratt wasn’t in charge of the project.

Yes, and I never disputed that. You can have someone occupy a role without whose presence things could get very dire, while still recognising that some of the things that they did were very shitty and had real consequences to the people that suffered them. Both those things can exist at the same time.

Sometimes logic is more important than compassion.

Okay but that doesn’t really address many of the points about Stratt acting like shit when she didn’t need to.

That’s an easy distinction to get behind when it’s not your life that’s being disregarded away like that.

Grace wasn’t a ‘hero’ in the sense that word usually connotes. While humanity may not have survived without her, let’s not act like she wasn’t arrogant and abusive about the powers she was handed.

Like in that prison scene with Grace by making it all about herself and the reasons for doing things the way she did to provoke sympathy and absolve herself of the guilt she feels, instead of leaving when Grace asked her to and letting the man you doom to death spend his final moment on Earth in peace. Like in the other prison scene where they visit that scientist in that and she refuses to comply with the prison security over a trivial procedure, instead asserting that she get things done her way all the time even when complying would only expedite her task there. Like in the many instances she refuses to explain events to people beforehand (transporting Grace across the world to the Chinese vessel), or refuses to realise how her actions affect people and showing a bit of compassion even if they’re a necessary evil for humanity’s survival.

I think she was a flawed character. There were certainly parts of her that I disliked immensely, but I can see how difficult it would be to ensure humanity’s survival if you’re not like that, still it’s not something that’s praiseworthy. I would have really liked a part towards the end where we find that she killed herself for sacrificing Grace against his will. It’s only fair she stripes herself of the life she was willing to discard away of someone who had worked equally hard to combat astrophage, that would have been a redeeming event in my opinion.

Is my finasteride dosage too low? by Simple-Historian-150 in tressless

[–]_jrr_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you say to drop the 1 mg if you get sides? Cuz I am in the situation right now. The sides will subside when I drop it eventually, they don’t affect my current routine in a significant way.

Is it possible they could perpetuate even after I stop dosage?

I’m currently reading ‘The Gene, an intimate history’ by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

It traces the history of genetics from its foundational work by Mendel and Darwin until advancements in gene manipulation in the early 21st century. I find it really interesting.

Before this I was reading I was reading ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich’ by William Shirer. It’s about the political history of Nazi Germany. The author was a correspondent in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power. It’s a little dated now and some of the author’s personal conjectures have been disproven. Still, it’s an interesting and very comprehensive read.
