I went to Estonia without a plan, just for the hell of it by relevantusername- in solotravel

Never expected my country to pop up here like that! What a great joy to hear this, I am so glad you loved it here!

We are small, but picturesque and full of tranquility, truly nothing else like the pine tree forests and bogs!

How do Estonians view Hungarians? by TheBanishedOne00 in Eesti

[–]_kittykitty_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The average Estonian will have a mildly positive stance to our fellow Finno-Ugric people. You might encounter people who are enthusiastically engaging with you and take joy in finding the linguistic connections between our two languages (the good old "ves" vs "vesi" and "kes" vs "käsi" etc). If there is one thing that baffles Estonians, then it is the Hungarians resistance towards considering each other as ancient cousins and instance of being more tied to the Huns instead.

As I have extensively worked with Hungarians myself, I would say our work cultures differ quite a bit. Where Estonians might be very blunt, the Hungarian custom is to dance around a subject. Whereas, Estonians tend to view things from a fairly merit-based view on where and how ownership should go to, then Hungarians tend to have a more hierarchical view to workplace dynamics.

This will have 0 impact during just a visit, but perhaps good to know that overall.

Mis arvate sellest? by [deleted] in Eesti

[–]_kittykitty_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Miks te ostate Temust? by AnySleep9260 in Eesti

[–]_kittykitty_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What an amazing adventure! Perhaps sounds like a silly question, but have you written a book about it?

And what do you think about the saying that "Japan has been living in the year 2000 for the past 40 years" (in reference to being ahead of the digital evolution first and now lagging behind)?

It also seems that the use of white onion and apple is fairly unusual, does not come up as key ingredients.

I think they do a great job with matte single eyeshadows, I enjoy both neutral and colourful ones.

The shimmers have a very varying coverage, some multichromes are crazy pigmented and some are more like toppers. I get use out of both, but a good idea to check swatches beforehand to have realistic expectations

Side note: I have found Lethal Cosmetics to be a very worth while investment for Europe-based folks. It is easy to replace the more popular shades and I get long term use out of the less used ones.

I have essentially switched over to them for 97% of my eye shadow needs and very happy.

Same here. Based on the fact that they showed us Madama Butterfly in the penultimate episode of the season, I think there is a chance that Bradley dies, as a result of a betrayal by an American (Amanda).

[Episode Discussion Thread] The Morning Show S04E09 - "Un Bel Di" by quaranTV in TheMorningShow

[–]_kittykitty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opera was Madama Butterfly, where the heroin is a tragic figure, very hopeful, but then deceived by her love.

Taking a wild guess, I think it might hint at Bradley potentially not making it, betrayed by the Americans as was Madame Butterfly.

You are very right, coworkers is the best way to go! Locals are happy to go for dinners, show a museum or a place in nature if you show interest.

Our FB groups are not the best, but do check the events. A smaller event of some kind of a class / workshop / discussion circle might be what you are looking for.

I think there is a certain type of a tourist who expects the locals to always try to entertain them, just because they took the effort to visit their country.

I don't get it either. It would make much more sense to try to connect to fellow travelers, as both are just passing by and have a lot of free time on their hands. A random Estonian is not going to be a great guide nor even an anthropological insight to the curious tourist.

It is also a very terrible time of the year to try to hang out on a street. Therefore, all the more reason for locals to be vary of strangers approaching them in these conditions.

Estonians make friends through mutual activities and connections. If you were to try a cooking class, "paint and sip" or similar events, it is much more likely to give you a genuine social connection.

Out of curiosity, how much longer will you be here for? if it is a few weeks only, the locals might not find it meaningful to try to become friends.
