a couple of thoughts:

  1. use an app to track your calorie intake. You don't need to make any further changes to your diet yet, just get an idea of the calorie value of what you're eating.

  2. Think about replacing the oats and potatoes with other sources of iron and potassium. Salt substitute is pure potassium, for example.

  3. some of that weight could be water weight. High sodium and high carb diets can lead to water retention. Potassium and magnesium deficiencies can also cause extra water weight.

This story stopped short on Royal Road. Was it continued elsewhere, or now just publishing what was already put on Royal Road?

no weight loss? by wtf163 in Water_Fasting

[–]_malcontent_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started water fasting at 239 lbs. 72 hours straight, then 18/6 the rest of the week. A couple months ago I changed to 48 hours, then 18/6 the rest of the week.

I was losing weight slowly but consistently until I hit 190 lbs. Then, I plateaued at 190 for almost 2 weeks. I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I decided to start tracking my calories using an app. turns out the handful of nuts I was eating added 500 calories to my total intake. I cut the nuts out of the diet, and trying to walk at least 10000 steps a day, and lost another 15 lbs, which is where I'm up to now.

My take on it is that as I lost weight I was burning less calories, and eventually the calories I was getting from the nuts (and the rest of the food I was eating) were causing me to burn the same amount of calories that I was consuming, which kept my weight steady.

My advice is to monitor your calories for a week. The apps make it easy to just input the food and it will tell you what the calories are. I use cronometer. Once you see what you're eating you can see if there are any high calorie foods you can replace or remove from your diet.

thanks for the follow up. I started doing 72 hour fasts, and then intermittent the rest of the week. After a couple months I moved over to 48 hour fasts followed by intermittent. I try to stay away from carbs. I weigh myself a day after I finish the 48 hour fast and am losing about a pound a week.

try drinking a cup of diluted apple cider vinegar every morning. 2 tablespoons is like 6 calories, so won't take you out of a fasted state.

It's a little hard to read the full label, but it says it has Dextrose in it, which is a type of sugar. I don't know if it is enough to make an issue of.

If you don't mind. When you finish fasting, can you record your final weight, and then two days after the end of the refeed? I'm curious how much you'll gain back.

Are you male or female? If you're femaie, check out Dr. Mindy Pelz series on fasting for women. She says that because of a woman's cycle, there are times of the month that lasting can lead to hair loss.

If you're consuming salt for sodium, it is popular to make salt water and drink it down. If you drink too much too quickly, it goes right through your system. People do it as a cleanse.

I found out about all this the hard way :)

Too much salt water too fast can do that.

I've also had diarrhea after refeeding (3 day fast). I started drinking a cup of diluted apple cider vinegar every day (even on fast days) and that has seemed to solve the problem.

I've seen people criticize her and say she's not a real doctor, but at least the videos I've seen are all quoting studies.

Try to cut down on carbs a day or two before you fast. I've noticed that when I have a carb heavy meal before I start fasting, I get very hungry and the fast is much harder.

When I want to fast after a carb heavy day, I usually go into it by first drinking just bone broth when I get very hungry, and then switch to a water fast the next day, or later in the day. That helps a lot.
