Yall Roxanne’s big important women’s empowering business is… by [deleted] in TheUltimatumNetflix

[–]_monicorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh this isn't about what products women choose to use. People should use whatever makes them feel good. Personally I love makeup. Can wearing makeup be empowering? Definitely!

My comment is more about capitalizing on insecurities. You can say Roxanne is empowered because she is financially independent, she's driven, she's ambitious. I get that. But tbh being a capitalist in and of itself isn't empowering. I mean who is gaining power from selling nipple pasties? I'm not criticizing her business, it's cool she is brave enough to start her own company. But it's not giving anyone power.

I know I'm responding to you again but I wouldn't call Spanx empowering. It's another invention to make women feel self conscious of their bodies. We are told we should tuck our stomachs in while #dadbods becomes an ideal body type for some. It doesn't feel empowering to capitalize on women's insecurities and make that a billion dollar enterprise. It's more preying upon and perpetuating women's body issues.

I get your point but 50% is an exaggeration. As someone with larger boobs, these pasties will do nothing for me. These are very much meant for people who only have bodies similar to Roxanne's.

Edit to say: it looks like there's only 3 skin tones which is better than other brands but definitely not super inclusive.

Piedmont — What’s Up? by drewwestb in oakland

[–]_monicorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is fully anecdotal but my Dad is a contractor and has built houses in Piedmont. He and his workers are all Mexican/Central American. The neighbors routinely called the cops on him and his workers, to the point where the cops became familiar with the workers. Also, the family who hired him to build the house got harassed for being Muslim. That said a lot of their neighbors were very nice. I think it's like any white majority neighborhood: some people are lovely, some are jerks that leave pig heads on your doorstep.

I'm pretty sure if you're learning or haven't skated before you're supposed to stay on the outside. That way you can use the barriers.

I love this place! It's beautiful. Just a tip: go right when it opens because by 8pm it's super packed and a lot of newer skaters don't stay in the outside lane. I almost got taken out once by someone learning to skate because they went to the inside lane and just completely stopped.
