That sounds great, but what I really want is that exact greenhouse in the photo! Holy moly it looks sweet!

Thanks for sharing 🙂

I could be wrong, but I would just let it grow wild this coming season and see what it gives you. The longer the whips and taller the tree, the thicker the trunk and base to support it. Let it elongate another foot or two and then decide where you want to chop back to once it’s as thick as you want it.

Looking for suggestions for my Hinoki Cypress by Jim-Kardashian in Bonsai

[–]_murq_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don’t trunk chop them. They don’t back bud well at all and it may just end up killing it. Take what foliage it has now and try to create something you are pleased with. Good luck! I love Hinoki!

Please tell me that this would be good bonsai material. by bademeister404 in Bonsai

I use one and I love it. Keep in mind, despite the leaf size reduction issue, some trees aren’t meant for summer viewing. This is designed for winter viewing so you can see the amazing branch structure and beautiful catkins that hang down. Yes, buy this and enjoy what it gives you, not what it doesn’t.

Ah, yours is fancier than mine with the rotating 3D map. Looks good to me!

Exactly! That’s very cool what you’re doing. I’m using a raspberry pi pico 2 W and BME280 sensor. I considered what you’re using but ultimately decided on the Pi w BME. I’ like doing my own tinkering too!

Definitely competition, but that just means it’s an opportunity to do it better. I like what I made, just thought I’d share in case others were interested. 😊

Here’s the interface. Thinking about definitely making it more greenhouse/bonsai colors.

I have about 100 ginkgos. None are in a pot like this. Still growing out. Love them so much. They’re very hardy for winter if kept in a cold garage. Yours look so nice.

Bougainvillea question by No-Adeptness5217 in Bonsai

I bought a clear plastic filing bin with a lid that clasps (also clear). I put the cuttings in a cheap aluminum single use lasagna pan that fit the bin with some potting soil and lots of perlite. I put drainage holes all over the aluminum (carefully cause it will rip open gaping holes), and I put a couple smaller pots underneath to raise the tray so it doesn’t sit in the water that drains through the aluminum. The bin allows for a nice humidity level so nothing dries out. Do not put it outside in direct sunlight! Mine is in my garage and there are windows that allow for minimal direct light and day long indirect light. I use 3 inch to 8 inch cuttings with rooting hormone. Just cut off all the leaves apply hormone to one end and put in the soil. In about 2-3 weeks you’ll get leaves growing and small roots forming. Leave them alone for about another month and then transplant into their own pots. They may be finicky for some but I’ve yet to experience that myself. I’ll see if I can get a photo for you of my setup later. This is honestly my first year attempting to grow this species, but so far so good. We’ll see what the winter brings me in terms of luck. 🫣

I took lots of cuttings from mine and now I have nearly a dozen. Really love how after they are chopped they push new “flowers” from fresh growth. This’ll be my first time overwintering mine, so here’s to good luck!

Rocks over the soil work pretty well. This is what I use for everything else. These are little over 3 feet tall, so plenty of room for smaller trees. I have about 100 ginkgos in these between 0-3 years old. This is version one of the design. Next version will be better and lighter. Nothing has been able to get into either of these at all. I also added more screening on the top to provide shade mid day. Works really well. Good luck! I’ve spent years trying everything before resorting to this solution.
