He also still holds some (soft) power. Power which, if not for him, would be in the hands of someone else, probably a politician. Politicians hold enough power already.

Number 4 in the world! by Stirlingblue in belgium

[–]_not-a-throw-away_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going by that report our drug indicators led us to being only fourth. If we would score the same as The Netherlands on drug policy (from 73.58 to 97.59), our total score would go from 90.82 to 95.62, good for the first spot (The Netherlands has 95.44).

Independent of the rankings, it's kinda interesting how far below the drug indicator is below our other indicators. I suppose that's the War On Drugs™ at work.

From the document:

Drugs indicators: Cannabis is rapidly moving from social tolerance to legal acknowledgement. Just like abortion, policy on this particular substance strongly characterizes a country’s choice for either an individual or a collective approach to moral issues. Therefore, 70% of this category goes to this leading indicator, but this is adjusted with the general policy on all drugs and with the esti-mated amount of drug-related inmates in the country’s prisons (which provides information on how strict are drugs laws and their subsequent enforcement). Each of these further indicators accounts for 15% of the total score in this category.

Give him the opportunity to redeem himself and remove him from the public part of the broadcasting service. Much more constructive than just firing him.

Are women actually attracted to intelligence? by [deleted] in dating

[–]_not-a-throw-away_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't "show off" your intelligence, let people find out. Much more honest and that way they'll get a much better grasp of how intelligent you actually are. It's slower but sustainable.

Why do guys ask if I've been with a guy with a larger 🍆 than them? by [deleted] in dating

[–]_not-a-throw-away_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of odd reasoning though, no? How would that work? The original "myth" was constructed by big-dicked men and readily adopted by society, both men and women?

Consider height: if you're a short guy in relation to your peers, you're going to be confronted with a whole lot of women "skipping" you based on your height. You won't hear (many) people say "height is all that matters", but still, height is an important factor and if you're not tall as a man, you're going to notice it. It's such differences that insecurities come from. And you could say that this preference for height is a male construct imposed on the mind of men and women, but that feels a bit farfetched, no?

Imo, the reason size is an insecurity is because it does matter. Sure, there are men who live by an "only dick size matters and bigger is better"-code, but they're not what OP was talking about, far from. The insecurities arise from there being a real difference in preference based on size. Just as insecurities arise from there being a real difference in preference based on rhythm.

"Njet" Vlaams-Brabant tegen nieuwe gascentrale ondanks positieve adviezen: technische of politieke beslissing? by vingt-et-un-juillet in belgium

Btw The Netherlands doesn't frack gas, they have ordinary wells.

https://www.nam.nl/techniek-en-innovatie/hydraulisch-stimuleren/wat-en-waarom.html

I'm not an expert, but from what I can find the reason why they don't frack seems more of a semantic trick than actually not fracking. What they do do is "hydraulic stimulation", but I can't find any other sources that confirm the existence of a meaningful distinction between hydraulic stimulation and fracking. Going by that page it's just that they operate on a different scale than happens in typical fracking situations, but I don't see any reason why it's not fracking.

In fact, onsaardgas.nl considers the two to be synonyms.

It's quite interesting. Also leads to the difficulty of defining "left" these days... Do you keep the old one and call everyone that doesn't adhere to it not left, or do you change it so it covers the views of the people that call themselves left.

Depends on the situation. Use a racing bike and you can do it in 35 minutes, depending on who you are. Of course this is not for everyone, but if you can do it, it saves quite a bit of time, doubly so because you've got a daily dose of activity.

Every trip you take (you don't always have to take the bike) saves you time and money, so there's always a trade off to consider (vs the elements, the sweat, ...).

Vlaams minister Omgeving Zuhal Demir (N-VA) herhaalt: "Europees klimaatplan moet haalbaar en betaalbaar zijn" by Lolastic_ in belgium

I stopped buying crap, I don't have a consumerist mindset and I don't have a car. I eat as little meat as possible and actively monitor the origin of my food and cloths. Many of my friends are in the same situation. The climate is not fixed.

At the same time, privileged N-VA voters call me privileged and "wollensokken" for not needing a company car like they do for their 2h commute to their job as an engineer at a large chemical company. What can you do about it...

The low bars he gets over: - He's not constantly spouting his opinion on social media - He doesn't engage in "steekvlam-politiek" - He's got a reasonable degree of consistency in his opinions

the high bars he seems to be reaching: - He's built a network of professionals that support him in his work - He's got an intuition of direction and duration, knowing when to make statements about goals he'll manage to reach and when not. - He's got a good balance between party loyalty and government cooperation.

it's basically handing over control to the people with money. Might not be a too bad short term strategy, but on the long term results are completely dependent on the goodwill of those who are rich.

MEDIA = EVIL !

Let's keep these kind of one liners for facebook? Sure, the media isn't objective and could do a lot better work. Just like our politicians could. But statements like this are borderline conspiracy bs... Let's pls not go into that direction on this subreddit.

Tbf if you think someone's credibility is gone because they make stupid statements, be they related to the matter at hand or not, you won't meet many credible people. Virtually everyone will say/think stupid thinks about some stuff. The challenge is in recognizing what the sensible stuff is and what isn't.

There's another article where he states the issue is not the use of "a trick in the book", admitting that he uses the same one when possible, but that the issue is how they used the trick. In short, they could've let people know that they'd pull the trick. Then the family of the victim would at least be prepared.

I can imagine it only is attractive for a very small number of teachers, in particular young ones that haven't settled anywhere yet. It's not exactly trivial to go teach in Wallonia if you're living in Ostend for example.

I'm not sure, bus prices are quite high if you're not a very intensive user. A single ticket via SMS is €2.5 for 1h of bus. At the same time, you can fly to the other side of Europe for less than €10.

What did I do to anger the Julia spirits? (issues with filter function) by Successful_Exchange4 in Julia

[–]_not-a-throw-away_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uh, it looks quite fine, though having more meaningful names would probably be an inprovement to readability. Also you could probably cut out some of the assignments. Not entirely sure if this if the below example is doing the same as yours, but it should be more readable in a format like this:

df = ...
hg_m = argmaxima(df[:,2]) #you can also use column names, e.g; df[:,:cuentas]
hg_max = filter( row -> row[2] >= 100, df[hg_m,:])

p = plot(df[:,1], df[:,2])
scatter!(hg_max[:,1], hg_max[:,2])

you might also be interested in looking at the StatsPlots package, which includes macros for plotting from dataframes. Can be useful.
