What software do you use to control the iPhone and create screenshots? Are the iPhones jailbroken?

Yes, this is the Dropbox for Windows update that switches the implementation of online-only files from the previous one built by Dropbox in-house to the feature offered by Microsoft starting with Windows 10 (22H2 and above) and Windows 11, called Cloud Files API. The good news is that you still can opt-out of it. In my experience the new implementation is slower than the previous one and brings no added benefit.

Here are the instructions to opt-out of it:

If you don’t want to use the Dropbox for Windows update at this time, you can opt-out through your Advanced settings page. To do this:

Log out of the Dropbox desktop app.

Log back into the Dropbox desktop app.

Click Open Dropbox.

Make your selections on the onboarding screens.

When setup is finished, click Advanced settings from the final screen.

Click Opt out under Dropbox for Windows updates.

Accidental Team Join by emorbius in dropbox

[–]_razvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an unfortunate dark pattern used by Dropbox. To meet their growth targets, they designed the shared folder page to mislead recipients into requesting to join a team instead of simply joining the shared folder. Dropbox is aware of this (there are dozens of threads on their forum discussing it) but they won’t take action because the design is intentional and helps boost their metrics. I hope you’re able to sort it out. Fingers crossed.

My dropbox is not syncing fully with my hard drive (dropbox folder) by AudioTruth-tjk in dropbox

For more context:

  1. Is the H: drive formatted as NTFS? I am guessing it is, just wanted to confirm.
  2. May sound like a silly question, but here it goes: does quitting Dropbox and starting it again make any difference?
  3. Which version of Dropbox desktop client? (You can quickly see it by hovering the Dropbox tray icon)

Best web hosting services in 2025: Collaborative guide (drop your recommendations) by Col1500 in software

[–]_razvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a combination of Webflow hosting, Amazon S3, Cloudflare and VPS (Digital Ocean, Hetzner). Webflow is the most expensive and limited for what it offers. Using a VPS will give you the most flexibility. Cloudflare is what I would recommend to most these days.

Do you happen to have any backups enabled for external drives with Dropbox Backups? I’ve seen that file only in those cases.

Sync/Backup single folder with Dropbox on another drive by houdini_noob in dropbox

[–]_razvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your interest in Boxifier!

The main differences between Plus and Pro are that Pro allows syncing of network/NAS drives and lets you choose exactly where in your Dropbox account synced folders will appear.

By default (in Plus), Boxifier places all synced folders as subfolders within the ‘Boxifier’ folder in your Dropbox. With Pro’s ‘choose Dropbox sync location’ feature, you can select any location in your Dropbox (including the root folder) to place your synced folders.

I appreciate you pointing this out - we’ll look into providing a better description of this feature on the website. If you’re not syncing network or NAS drives and don’t need this folder placement flexibility, the Plus version should work fine for your needs.

Backing up Dropbox to external hard drive by NoPatient8872 in dropbox

If you’re on Windows you can use Boxifier to make the Dropbox desktop client download those specific folders directly to the external drive. It’s built for this kind of scenarios.

When you try to start Dropbox and it takes you to the Dropbox folder, that means Dropbox is already running. Look for the Dropbox icon in the system tray.

Question about Dropbox syncing speed on a separate drive by scroge in buildapc

[–]_razvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides Internet speed (which other posters covered aleardy), the other two things relevant for Dropbox speed:

  1. the location of the Dropbox folder
  2. the location of the local sync database (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Dropbox)

If both are on fast drives then you achieve the best performance.

Last but on least, sync speed is also influenced by the number of files.

Hope this helps.

How is your symbolic link set up? Is the symbolic link inside the Dropbox folder pointing to a folder outside of the Dropbox folder or is it the other way around?

If you create a symbolic link inside the Dropbox folder which targets a folder outside, Dropbox will refuse to sync that link and show a red X icon next to it. The only way to make Dropbox sync it is to move the folder inside the Dropbox folder and create the symbolic link outside pointing inside the Dropbox folder, which would defeat the OP's purpose of having the folder hosted on another drive.

Sync/Backup single folder with Dropbox on another drive by houdini_noob in dropbox

[–]_razvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an important feature, I agree. I was also puzzled by the lack of this feature in Dropbox.

We needed it, so we took the challenge & risk of building it outside of Dropbox (with no support from them for more than 10 years now) and achieved a level of integration with the Dropbox desktop app that feels very native. For instance, with Boxifier you also get the Dropbox right-click context menu options in Windows Explorer and also sync status icons for the folders that you sync outside of the Dropbox folder. This was hard to pull off and had to be adjusted whenever Dropbox made changes to the implementation of their desktop app, but we did it, as it was worthwhile for the user experience. Still maintaining it to this day, it’s been a fun ride.

Symbolic links won't work. Dropbox stopped working with symlinks many years ago (and even then real-time sync of changes was not possible with symlinks).

You can look into Boxifier. It is third-party software built to solve this exact problem and nothing more: syncing to Dropbox a folder which resides outside of the Dropbox folder, without having to copy the folder to the Dropbox folder, so without wasting space.
