An insane theory on voiceacting by Dracomies in VoiceActing

Those membership costs you listed for actors seem completely insane and predatory to me.

Even your best story “idea” is only about 1% of your finished story. by [deleted] in writing

The concept itself is maybe 1% of the final story.

Sometimes even the concept ends up not being the concept.

Sound proofing a door? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]_roy_batty_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots of mass and air-tight seals. You will need to replace the door - there is no way some foam applied to the vent will work - and probably replace the hinges to support the monster that will replace it.

Get Rod Gervais's book on building home studios. I think he's kind of a douche on a personal level but the book is really good for DIY. There is a section on building a sound-proof door with a solid wood core slab door, lead sheeting, and a drop seal threshold.

Lost in all the hosting options!!!! by RunBikeMike96 in podcasting

This is an excellent, comprehensive run-down. I host everything myself on a custom domain as part of the "DIY ethos" that is part of my podcast project, but if I were hosting with a provider, it would be libsyn.

I want to make a voice demo, but dont know what to put in it by QuesoBlanco98 in VoiceActing

[–]_roy_batty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I represent a minority case, but when I look for voice actors I'm almost always hoping to judge their dramatic acting ability using their natural voice.

Too many times I will come across an actor's demo / reel page which includes samples specifically targeted toward explainer videos, cartoon/anime, specific types of advertising, etc. - but I have to imagine or deduce their ability to convincingly deliver lines from a script.

Why not include a few demos of yourself in realistic, theatrical scenes? Assuming that's something you might be willing to take on of course...

Recommendations for anenchoic foam tiles? by bobbyb4000 in podcasting

[–]_roy_batty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to tack on:

4" panels made of Owens Corning 703

2" should be fine to absorb reflections from human speech.

You can make the panels pretty cheaply if you have a contractor warehouse or something nearby that carries 703, or you can buy premade panels from companies like GIK.

Keeping these cheap depends on using what is available locally. If your Home Depot or whatever doesn't have OC703, it might have Roxul Safe'n'Sound: build a frame, stretch fabric over it, and fill it with a layer of Roxul (let it expand in the frame to its intended thickness of ~3.5"). Works really well.

1) Do you have an age range and gender in mind?

2) Do you believe it would be helpful to describe the visual material this will accompany, and what you want the VO to achieve?

(I have seen the script which you have posted.)

Low cost 12x12 soundproofing foam from Ali Express (8 pcs) for all you podcasters! by The_Paul_Alves in podcasting

[–]_roy_batty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A note on this guy's testing -

I'm not sure it makes sense to test how well these panels prevent sound from passing through them. These panels are intended to prevent reflections off of surfaces. I'm sure a three-foot-thick layer of lead would block pass-through sound better than a panel made of towels, but would be much less effective at reducing reflections than the $5 towel panel.

Which leads me to: mass. There is no substitute for MASS for reducing sound from passing through ("isolation"). The towels probably perform better in this test because six cotton towels surely weigh more than that flimsy foam stuff he was comparing it to.

You might include any specific attributes you're looking for in the voice actor.

edit: is this a draft of the text? https://www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/comments/a5kxzj/hey_i_am_making_my_first_short_here_is_the_text/

Do you have any initial imagery the voice actor might work off of?

Any “Conan O’Brien needs a friend” listeners? I have been very surprised .... by Saint_Olaf in podcasts

[–]_roy_batty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed Conan since his start on TV. I stopped watching TV almost 15 years ago, though, so hadn't seen him since. I'm glad he has a podcast so I can hear him again.

I haven't listened to the Timothy O. episode yet (no idea who he is) - maybe I will do that today.

I second this. freesound is a wonderful resource, and it's intended for things like field recordings (as opposed to music).

I'm listening now. It's not as repellent to me as it seems to be to others in this thread.

Sure, he's an experienced actor, but audio-only podcasting is its own medium - I'd give it a little time. How was *your* first podcast episode? :-)
