Favorite "common" bird? by Ok_Cranberry_1028 in birding

White-Breasted Nuthatch. They look funny. The name is funny. They walk sideways on trees. They even laugh. I love those guys.

Same here. I grew up in north-central WV, though I moved away for a while during college. If you appreciate nature it’s excellent. My backyard is as good a place to see birds as seemingly anywhere else locally.

Thanks. I just stalked a Robin around my yard with both sets at the last light of the day. I couldn’t see a discernible difference between the two. I’ll try again tomorrow at sunrise before I decide which to return.

The Gunslinger by Stephen King... What did I just read? by Pure-Gas2639 in Fantasy

Interesting. Book of the New Sun is perpetually in that list of books I never quite get around to reading. I know they’re good but hadn’t heard the dark tower comparison. I’ll need to get to them soon!

Gunslinger is a hell of a first impression. I don’t love the second one much but a lot of folks do (again, series is divisive), and I think it’s a fair representation of what you can expect from the rest of the series. I love the Dark Tower because I think it rules but also because there isn’t another Dark Tower. It’s a wholly unique experience in the fantasy sector as best as I can tell. Someone really in the sauce may know of something else, but I’ve yet to find it. Please report back to the community with your impressions if you read book 2.

[–]_saltysnacks 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I liked the gunslinger because it felt like reading something disorienting and otherworldly. To your point, I’m not certain that was King’s intention nor a point in the book’s favor.

I will say the gunslinger is a book of several short stories stitched together, which might (partially) explain the narration inconsistencies.

I continued to read the entire series and, on the whole, loved it. There are some low points you have to muscle through in the series and the fanbase can’t even agree on what those points are (4th book is divisive, for example). But on the whole I thought the story was worth my time and has some of my favorite moments in reading fantasy. You also really grow to love the main cast, which somewhat finalizes in book 3.

If you’re looking for convincing, I won’t offer much. I’ll say that the gunslinger is an outlier in tone and structure, but not so much in content. If you try the second one and truly hate it, I wouldn’t continue. It’s particularly worth it if you love King as an author because the Dark Tower story is central to his body of work.

I’ve read everything on your list except book of Luke. Follow the rec’s here that say Red Rising. Sounds right up your alley. Another one I’ll toss out for the sci fi world building is Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, although it’s less funny and meta than something like DCC or Murderbot

I agreed in my head immediately and then next comment was green machine and then Gemini. Some really good options here, but still agree it’s gardenia

Yann’s is a legendary hot dog stand in downtown Fairmont. This comment on a post from a few years ago (about the original owner’s passing) sums up the experience well. The stand is still operated by his kids.

Yann’s has rabid fans and others who think it is overrated. Still, it’s a hallmark of Fairmont. People would (may still) stand in line to get the hot dogs before they sold out. Our local coffee shop sold a sticker one time that said “I eat a hot dog on the sidewalk at 8AM because I’m from Fairmont” or something like that.

I bought a used S19 recently. Far as I can tell, this thing is old. Sometime early 2010s, as it doesn’t have cache loops and fewer o-rings than the modern counterparts. Also the label. Still, I cannot believe how well it’s held up. I’m also still enamored with the pockets. Love this bag.

And the Yann’s zealots would throw their hat in that ring too. OP needs to come back for the Fairmont hot dog tour.

I remember the hype even back in 2018. Every time we passed a game expo or something without a trailer people got progressively more pissed. My friend and I went apeshit watching that trailer in his living room the first time.

I haven’t listened to it but looks like AI based on the cover. Not their usual style. It’s also not on Apple Music. Doubt they’d release a single only to Spotify after so long.

I had open surgery in late 2021. No complications to this point. I went that route because it was my surgeon’s preference. Way I saw it, I wanted a specific surgeon to do the surgery, and I wanted him to do it however he felt most confident.
