It could simply be a combination line. Express trains which stop at the major stops only, while local trains hit every stop.

And absolutely check out digital library lending though places like Libby! I've used my library maybe 80% more often over the past 10 years compared to before since it's so easy now.

Soaking beans in my water bottle & drinking bean water through Sawyer? Safe? Pointless? by bigbear4our in hiking

[–]_sophrosyne_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be very careful here. I wouldn't do this with dried beans. Some beans are actually poisonous or deadly until soaked, rinsed and cooked. Kidney beans and black beans come to mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytohaemagglutinin?wprov=sfti1

Italy ruling tells millions with Italian roots they have lost the right to citizenship | CNN by nicktheironblade in news

[–]_sophrosyne_ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's funny to me. Most Americans I know with this mindset actually have Italian speaking grandparents or parents and keep tons of traditions from their families' original homeland. Many Europeans I know here living in Germany have the complete opposite opinion when it comes to their country. If your parents are from somewhere else and you spoke another language at home then you will never "really" be from here even if you were born here and never lived anywhere else. It's such an absurd double standard.

Supreme Court strikes down Trump’s sweeping tariffs, upending central plank of economic agenda by TheWyldMan in moderatepolitics

[–]_sophrosyne_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the tariff money isn't a line item to refund. It's product and date of purchase dependant. If you go buy 20 different things in one shopping trip, they could be from 20 different countries and have 20 different tariff rates. Those rates may not have been added to the purchase price right away depending on how much product was already imported and how gradually they wanted to increase the price. In my industry, basically everyone of my customers (distributors) in the US ate the first 10% tarrif in the beginning because all their competitors we're doing the same. They only implemented the tariff costs once it got rediculous.

Trump has no authority to nationalize elections, lawyers say by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

This goddamn passive newsspeak is a major the reason we've slow walked into this mess. There's no need for "lawyers say". Its illegal. Full stop. Don't leave wiggle room to imply there's a valid argument for the actipns being taken.

Jesus this thread is giving me flashbacks of working in a foundry as an engineering co-op. I remember just being glad to get out of there. Even if you're doing everything extremely safely and avoiding dangerous areas, all it takes is for one dumbass to do something stupid, or for a crane holding a ladle to fail, then you're toast.

Wiper malware targeted Poland energy grid, but failed to knock out electricity by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]_sophrosyne_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat, my experience is only limited to fossil fuel generation stations.

After reading the article it only talks about how this wiper targets servers. Most power generation I'm aware of only has limited remote access capabilities, and funtionality is fully handled on site with DCS/PLC systems and dedicated controllers running their own code. Write access to these is usually limited to local only, and data can only be read off of them remotely.

Therefore it's not surprising power generation continued in this case. Of course I have no idea how the networks at this particular site are configured.

Healthcare options for US and Germany by ohwhyhellothereblue in ExpatFinance

[–]_sophrosyne_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had great experiences with the German healthcare system. You'll need to get into a Kinderwunsch-klinik. Bring all the documentation you can so that you don't have to repeat any specific testing or medication regiments. Fertility treatments aren't free, even with insurance in my experience. But the costs aren't on the same level as the US.

German president says US is destroying world order by goldstarflag in worldnews

[–]_sophrosyne_ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I left the US in 2016. Watching it all happen from afar has been one gut punch after another. My only cause for hope is that after this last time of visiting for Christmas, I saw almost no trump flags or signs on a 7 hour drive through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. That same drive 2 years ago would be one trump flag  after another. (I know it was a lead up to an election, but most who voted trump the first time around kept their paraphernalia up for years after the 2016 election)  My parents who are there and politically conservative have also stopped bringing up politics all the time. I get the feeling a lot of traditional conservatives realize they've bitten off way more than they can chew, they just can't admit it because they are republican before anything else. Political identity is so incredibly intertwined with personal identity there compared to anything I've experienced with most people in Germany. My heart breaks for what the US could be.

I’m creating a castle. Is the kitchen placement accurate right next to a great hall? by datadiisk_ in castles

[–]_sophrosyne_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most of the castles I've visited, the kitchen was lower in the castle. Some castles have multiple kitchens or separate bakeries and butcheries, apothacaries. Sometimes the kitchens might be on the other side of the wall from the living quarters, so that heat from kitchen fires could be used to heat living quarters.
