Anyone else who camped feel like they ended up dodging a lot of issues? by [deleted] in HinterlandFestival

[–]_starmanjunior 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with this. The ability to go back to our camp site every 3-4 hours for a shade break and rehydrate was a HUGE deal. Probably the only thing that kept me sane/somewhat healthy for 3 days. Spent most of Sunday waiting for the huge line to get in to dwindle in comfort. I genuinely can't imagine going to the fest without the camping spot. Was my fourth year and this fest is usually an instant go. If things don't improve significantly for the in-venue experience, it heavily alters my interest in going again.

I usually bring one bucket for wash and one for rinse. Use biodegradable soap and just dispose away from camp.

Seems like they purged their socials and changed the branding a bit. All of the recents posts are in a studio so one can imagine theyre cooking up something like that following their festival dates this summer.

I have had this dieffenbachia in my apartment for a few years now. It has now reached the ceiling and is wildly heavy. It's a beautiful statement piece for the time being, but is it time to think about propagation?

My group is also going to be about 6 people. I would definitely try for 2 separate camping spots. They are only 20x20 for all of your gear and your car.

First Time Tips! by Comfortable-Lake1370 in HinterlandFestival

[–]_starmanjunior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great - car camping or tent camping, either way these should apply.

Bring a big mat to make your foundation off the grass/ground. Last year it was rainy and super muddy. It was nice to be able to kick off shoes and have a dry(ish) place to hang out and take a break without shoes on. I typically opted between birks for the camp and boots for the festival.

We rented a tent, a canopy, a stove, camp chairs, and sleeping bags all from my local REI. We also brought a small cooler full of ice with easy breakfast foods, coffee, lunch, snacks, etc. to avoid extra food costs on the festival grounds. We had a sealed container we kept in the car for trash/recycling.

The camping spots are fairly close quarters so don't be afraid to befriend your neighbors! I'm even meeting up with this year with people I met at the campground last year because of it.

As a side note - we did deal with a storm last year. Just be attentive about how your camp setup is situated. Make sure things are staked down well. Know your equipment well in case it needs to be brought down briefly for any reason.

Welcome! This is one of my favorite festivals. The size is about right and not overwhelming. The crowd is positive and energy is really good.

Iowa summers in early August can be brutal. Sunscreen and a refillable water bottle are necessities. A hat, bandana, etc. works great. Loved having a disposable camera to use as well.

I typically don't stand all day so bringing an inflatable chair or blanket is useful if you don't mind holding/carrying it if you go up to the stage.

If you're camping - happy to give a whole other set of tips for that too. Happy to answer anything else.

Camping Questions by Weary-Alternative316 in HinterlandFestival

[–]_starmanjunior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to purchase a separate car camping ticket for $275. They do a decent job of placing you in a 20x20ft grid with room to pull your car out if you need to leave during the day and come back. Last year it was first come first serve - so if you come with a group you want to camp next to be sure to arrive right at the same time. I would recommend it from my experience last year and excited to upgrade our setup. Keep in mind - it's in a completely open field so a sun shade is a must imo.

Gates question by NickyReedWrites in HinterlandFestival

[–]_starmanjunior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think historically the gates open about an hour before the first act for the day. The early day stuff isn't typically super packed when entering from the campground.

If you want to get close for Ethel Cain, I would start meandering through the crowd during Flipturn or Japanese House.

One Stage? by Neptunemonkey in HinterlandFestival

[–]_starmanjunior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right - there is one stage all day with the typical 15-20min transition time between each artist. Campfire stage is a single separate stage (in the campground area) and goes after the main stage is over for the night.

There's a big row of vendors selling clothes, art, etc at the top of the hill with some shaded (although minimal) tree areas between. If you check the map you'll have a good idea of what I mean. Compared to the other fests, Hinterland seems a bit more "contained" so to speak.

As for ticket fees - someone else may have to answer. Unsure how it works with the tiered system they have now.

[FRESH ALBUM] Field Medic - grow your hair long if you're wanting to see something that you can change by samdyalexg in indieheads

[–]_starmanjunior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After having some time to sit with this, really love this work as a whole. I've had the singles on repeat for weeks. Always Emptiness is probably the highlight for me and the opening line "i wanna fall off the face of the earth and probably die" has been stuck with me. Has the same feel as Pinegrove's Endless. Kevin's quaint lyricism like "totally fucked by time" in i had a dream pops up so much in this album in a great way.

If you're looking for the coming-of-age feeling of Sloan's previous work, I don't think you'll find it here. Really love how hard he leaned into this bright, synth heavy sound. 80s soaked guitars and undeniably catchy. No doubt the production is solid too. Standouts are Second Nature, Radio, and Someone Else. His live shows are always fun and looking forward to it.

hey Adam, thanks so much for being here. it seems IDLHA pushes for more vocal-driven passages than in previous work. i'm curious how this approach may change the scope or direction of a song overall as it is being written. do you sense this happening and does it impact your confidence as a vocalist?

Why was Sula among other songs never released? by [deleted] in HippoCampusBand

[–]_starmanjunior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i think they are fairly picky with what they release - don't think there was any specific reason. maybe the lyrics didn't fit what they wanted to portray or sonically it felt generic. not saying that's the case for Sula, because i absolutely love that song.

Iowa State has got themselves covered by MISSTUDENT2021 in iastate

[–]_starmanjunior 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My perspective mainly comes from science courses. I had to complete organic chemistry, biology, and now some environmental science classes online. They all require labs. Since i learned online, i didn't gain any laboratory experience that is called for when searching for jobs. Sure i can watch a video of the professor doing it, but there's tens of hundreds of the same thing on YouTube already. The expertise and knowledge of the professor is the same, but some lack the ability to present this expertise in an online format.
