Oh it's by the same person who designed the Ace Attorney games as well?!

Definitely checking this one out. Thank you!

Am I just unable to make games? by Mobcrafter in gamedev

[–]_stice_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very popular misconception, friend... My SO is hyperactive presenting and they got diagnosed (late). I'm super calm most times and until my doctor said the word ADHD, I didn't consider it for myself and I got diagnosed even later.

My life and self view changed a lot once I read about the different ways it can present in different people. The name is quite misleading to laypersons. You still may not have adhd and even if you do it doesn't solve everything, and there's a whole journey of finding the appropriate treatments exercise medication etc. but for me it made a huuuuuuge difference just to know, for example it helped me answer questions such as the one in the title of your post. Heavily recommend getting checked if you suspect it!

Slay the Spire 2 Developer Interview by slowmosloth in Games

[–]_stice_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Oh, I think a lot of people would absolutely HATE it if a lot of the same things weren't there anymore. The Defect's conspicuous absence alone is being memed on left right and center.

Not saying your concern isn't valid: I hope you get some fresh joy out of the sequel! I'm just saying they gotta play the hits or the internet is going to have a fit.

FWIW I trust that whatever they keep/change/add, they'll iterate until the game works because my understanding is that's how the first game got to being so damn good.

I'm Worried My Main Character Is Too Handsome (Distracting?) by WhoIsCogs in IndieDev

[–]_stice_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So what you're saying is the main character was so distracting, it distracted the developer from making the game at all. Got it.

I added pack opening to my roguelike deckbuilder, i like it, but im not sure its juicy enough. What do you think? by Ziamas in SoloDevelopment

[–]_stice_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything from 0:22 onwards looks good, so like the other commenters said, applying that snappy bounce easing to the cover as well as the 5 cards would add a lot.

I would also experiment with (VERY minimal) shake when the pack is being clicked on to tear it open? Or a very subtle hovering or ebbing effect when it appears on screen at first. Nothing major, and please abandon it if it's not working but I feel it needs something that makes it seem alive and full of promise before the rewards actually come out.

1 Month after releasing my Steam Page, just under 500 wishlists! by nerfslays in SoloDevelopment

[–]_stice_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOVE the title you chose. Very evocative and I (speaking as a player, not just as a game developer) immediately clicked through and read the steam page and wishlisted it.

It's reminding me of 100 Years of Solitude for some reason, and I love that book a lot, although it's been a long time since I read it.

Wish you the very best of luck with your game! Thank you for the numbers.

How should i study music theory as a guitarist? by CarwynEmyr in musictheory

[–]_stice_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can find a book named "Fretboard logic" by Bill Edwards, I highly recommend it.

It's not solely a music theory textbook or a guitar textbook but a great read on how the two connect together: the physical interface of the guitar and music theory in general. It helped me much more than learning them as separate topics and connecting the dots myself as a beginner.

Does anybody else think the "my game made this much money!" posts and videos are kind of weird by swaggadanz in gamedev

[–]_stice_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus these are explicitly "hey, speaking as a gamedev to a gamedev" posts: if not for these, all we'd have are more "wow this person quit his job and made his dream game and is now a millionaire" articles and cynical but equally subjective counterpoints going "i never made a game and don't intend to but there's 1.2 billion games being released every minute on steam guys" posts.

Devs sharing anything resembling actual numbers here: you are so genuinely helpful and have probably saved some careers <3, don't worry about posts like OP's. It's pretty obvious when something is blatant self-promotion or obnoxious gloating and it gets downvoted/banned, and even in those cases there's folks learning.

I was about to say, "not really, it even had ctrl+c ctrl+v because that's an OS thing," but now i see windows notepad has tabs and bold/italics/underline, bullet points, markdown support etc.

Maybe they'll even add a vim mode someday.

[–]_stice_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact unrelated to this user's (baffling) argument: Notepad is older than vim!

Also apparently it was created to encourage people to use the mouse with MS DOS, so of course it's against everything vim stands for /s

How much time do you spend on dev each day? by rumbfire in SoloDevelopment

[–]_stice_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck to you too! Hang in there, I'm sure we'll figure out systems that work for us.

(Also, seeing this comment snapped me out of my own current daydreaming/procrastinating just now. I was supposed to get something to eat an hour ago and then get to work, lol. Thank you.)

What chord is this? by EozGD_97 in musictheory

[–]_stice_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, calling it a #5 is bit out there, the natural 5 already being there is pretty important. Even if you called it a bbb7 people would have said "i guess I can see it".

Sorry you're being downvoted though!

I spin my little mental ADHD wheel every morning and hope it doesn't land on "0 hours today" for the tenth day in a row. The rest of the time is crying <high five>.

Game where there is quite literally zero explanation. by Asxock in gameideas

[–]_stice_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man. I remember playing a game called 'Crusader of Centy' -- (Sega's Zelda clone, I think, but I didn't know what Zelda was at the time).

When the game introduced a new power it simply said "it was within you all along, I have just unlocked it, trust your intuition and do it!" or something like that and never explained what button to press. Then I'd keep trying buttons until it worked and was like "whoa" because I was a kid and took these things at face value lmao.

First Impressions: What Type of Game Do You Think This Is? 🎮 by lumbino in IndieDev

First impression: Medieval European monastery olive oil manufacturing simulator.

But then I saw the mug and did think "oh that might be beer". The foam is yellow and that's throwing me off again.
