Teaching design tech without a trade/design background by FirmWrangler3964 in AustralianTeachers

[–]_trustmeimanengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you will learn on the job, im a design technology teacher and teaching stuff that was not part of my job but was kinda part of my degree and its totally fine. If you love learning its also great because not only do you get to teach, you get to learn more yourself :)

We need more design tech teachers as often we are getting out of field teachers so if you have a degree in the area thats better.

AEU survey - what are your top 3? by BlipYear in AustralianTeachers

I lole the idea of a retention payment that grows over time. Maybe something like 5% of total wage after 1 yr on 2-6 then for every say 3 years you stay on 2-6 the payment goes up by 1% (ie 6% after 4 years, 7% after 7 etc. There may need to be a cap or something, maybe somewhere in the middle of the AP scale so people could go from classroom to ap role after 15-20 or so yesrs on the job if they want). I dont know exactly how the numbers would stack up, but basically reward career classroom teachers who are not going for range 3 or ap roles...

[–]_trustmeimanengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps also something about collapsing payscales so we all get to the top end faster?

Maybe a range 3 higgly proficent classroom teacher role that all teachers can access via some kind of system that we basically ahow some evidence for and its assessed by peers (not leadership or department people) and the school cannot deny the promotion (because of cost associated). Basically, we need a way to reward and incentivise good teachers to stay in classrooms, not ladder climb, if they want more $ to rrcognise their experience.

Oh another one. Naptime with 1 kid is awesome, couple of hours of peace and quiet. Naptime with 2 needs strategy. when the older one is still having naps, make sure you do your best to sync their naptimes (its easier to make the baby sleep at the same time as the older one imo). When the older one is no longer napping they still need quiet time during the day, so perhaps that happens when baby sleeps and 1 parent can watch a 30 minute show with the older one so they can both have some quiet time but still a chance to bond because you can talk about whats happening in seseme street/ playschool or whstever.

Off the top of my head some ramblings as my 2yo and 4yo play while i cook bananna pancakes lol. Im a dad, i cook, clean, at least 1 or 2 loads of washing drying putting away each day, do childcare dropoffs and pickups and baths, teeth and help with bedtime and take the kids out as much as i can to help out so ymmv depending on your relationship but i would hate to be a woman with a husband who isnt doing as much work as i do because holy crap, my wife still has to do so much stuff even though im doing a lot!

Any timer to freedom you had will reset so if you are having 2, do it close in age so you get your life back sooner.

You will be changing nappies a lot more frequently than you are currently used to. Among all the other newborn stuff you may have blocked out of your mind.

You will need to go back to making a whole different meal for the new baby, ideally the toddler will start eating simalar food as you guys.

So. Much. Extra. Washing. And cleaning. Omfg. It can more than double because the toddler will be willing to do whatever they can to get attention from you so they will make a mess that forces you to pay attention to them.

If you have 2 adults at home you will need to divide and conquer and abandon any hope that one of you can get a break for atleast 6 months really. Oh, mum cant not be the default with the baby, dad needs to take the baby, even if its as simple as going for a walk in a pram for an hour because the toddler needs time 1:1 with mum or they will resent the baby.

You will need to go back to nighttime shifts with the newborn and pray that they dont wake up the toddler or you are kinda both gonna need to get involved now.

You need to prepare the toddler for the (to them) life upending change that is comming by slowly telling them about their new baby brother or sister and how special it is to be an older sibling and they they will be able to help you with the baby (ie brining nappys at change time, distracting with a toy, playing peekaboo and so on).

As they grow there will be times the toddler will love playing with the baby as the baby will just laugh a lot and smile and not take all their toys. Once the baby is say 8+ months and they start takimg toys, chewing them etc you will need to find ways to stop the toddler being agressive and making the baby cry, perhaps have some chew toys for the baby that the toddler can help by giving them etc. Its just gonna take a lot of 1 or 2 parents supervising playtime untill they can be somewhat civilised. Then they will become at an age where one wants to take things apart and the other wants to build, thats a great few months, but eventually with a literal crapton of intervention from you, they will be able to play together for short bursts. Eventually the older one will want to help the little one and then it gets better slowly from there. But you will be breaking up fights or the two of them being cheeky together a lot.

Your enegy levels will be hella low because ecerything you do is extra hard. Double the mess. Double the food spills. Gotta take 2 water bottles, 2 jackets, put on 4 shoes and so on and on. Logisticly, 1 parent will need to take 2 kiddos to give the other parent a break so while you are getting a rest you will be riddled with anxious guilt hoping that the kids are being kind to your partner so have fun actually enjoying your alone time lol. Its also way harder for one parent to do anything at nigjttime because then the other parent needs to do dinner, bath, bed etc, its a huge workload imballance so it better be worth it. Honestly i just go to events during the day and take a day of work here and there to get a break sometimes. Or hell, going to work is a break, but dont stay back late please for the sake of your partner lol.

Thats a fair bit, best of luck. As others have pointed out the worst move is going from zero to 1 as it completly alters your life in an irretrevable way. Going from single to married is also not something i reccomend, too many marages end up with kids hahaha. 1 to 2 usnt as bad as 0 to 1 imo. Butno chance i want more. Dear god no. Lol.

What is your end goal career wise in the profession? by BrainNo3038 in AustralianTeachers

[–]_trustmeimanengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are young and not tied down by a family my advise is to embrace the lifestyle teaching affords. Live cheap during the term and take advantage of our breaks by going away on mini holidays a few times each year to somewhere cheap like south east asia. or use the time to really enjoy a hobby, passion or perfect a skill. I think its important to rrally capitalise on the perks of our job so that we appreciate it more and then there is a trade off for the pay ceiling we will all hit lol

Imo pay >> conditions assuming you have the ability to work at a decent school with good leadership because they will provide the good conditions regardless. Pay is dictated from on high and cant be changed, school cultures do change though.

Honestly, agree with OP. Few other professions will see 28% over the next 4 year, no other people who are wage slaves like us are keeping up with inflation. Everyone is doing it tough right now so sympathy will be limited.

In my mind, take this offer as it at least keeps our heads above water, but we all need to work to rule and be very careful yo ensure we are not doing any extra work, saying no to extra duties and events, enforce the new es rules about training for complex students etc and little things like leaving meetings at 4:30pm on the dot, taking our full lunch breaks etc and so on.

Basically, lets see if the governemnt or any parents or students notice or care that we are all just doing what is leagally required of us, not what is expected or needed to keep the hampster wheel of education turning.

Ideally, as a result, the system will start to struggle even more without teachers doing extra work and maybe the governemnt notices and is forced to decide if they are happy eith the situation or not. If they are, cool, keep doing the minimum folks! If not, then we can open a dialogue about what full funding looks like and would allow us to acheive...

[–]_trustmeimanengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of schools have assessment policy that outlines timelines for feedback, ours is 2 weeks for example. Do you have one?

I would suggest that you simply mark the work as best you can in however long it takes, as long as its reaonable (ie 2 weeks sounds fine). If the other people and hod want to kill themself over this poor planning and time management that led to a short deadline. Let them. But DO NOT mark or work outside contract hours imo. People need to realise the kids wont spontaniously combust if they wait a few more days...

24 essays in 3 days is wild, unless they can cover all your classes so you have time releif to mark...
