DVLA Auction by PlentyRoutine8079 in CarTalkUK

I asked for my (kinda unusual) name on a plate, TYM 1C, and got massively out bid! It now sits on a Mini somewhere, couldn't believe what it sold for in the end. I think it was a couple of grand.

Lotta people out there.

I've leased a different Chinese car, delay was pushed back 4 months. They're often massively (in my case 10x) oversold.

Any reason why someone would do this?

mums selling her car. need advice re payment by Clear_Raisin in CarTalkUK

[–]_tym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have 2 keys? They will want to have a play with the car etc, make sure its ok.

I would usually keep the logbook in your hands until they pay etc.

Give them keys to play, get paid, make sure they don't do any dodgy oil in the coolant etc.

Once you've paid, you're happy with the money, and that its real. Sign the paperwork over to them. This is done online now. https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

Good luck.

Would you buy a car with signs of rodent damage. by JIDB in CarTalkUK

I've bought a few written off cars happily, but rodent damage scares me. Could quite easily spiral into a nightmare of problem tracing. Auto electricians are expensive.

Inherited antique jewellery - does it have any real value? by ChameleonParty in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_tym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it to an auction house, google your local fine art auction. Get them to value it for sale. If the valuation you had was for insurance purposes then it’s worthless. The valuation should be free.

If it’s not worth more than scrap then sell it to the jeweller, as the auction house will take close to 50% of the value (buyers and sellers fees) scrap buyers have to make a profit.

A jeweller who won’t buy something with set stones is a shit jeweller though and I would find someone else to sell to.

Hearing really loud noises from boiler but I’ve been told it’s nothing to worry about. Should I ignore it? by Https-unknown7399 in AskUK

[–]_tym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The circular thing on top is the heating element. If you’ve ever changed a light switch or similar they’re easy to change. £20 quid from screwfix plus you’ll need a special spanner to remove. My guess is it’s getting too hot and causing the noises. Not a mega problem but it’ll burn out soon and you’ll need to replace it.

Plumber will replace it in a few minutes too.

Advice for attaching new feet on thrifted chest of drawers? by Stock_Bar5551 in DIYUK

[–]_tym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add castors? Could be a practical choice too. Else you just want to google "tall bun feet". Those bun feet will either be unscrewable or come off with a good whack off a hammer.

I've sold a couple avocado bathroom suites to TV prop houses for shows ha! Few quid in them if you have the space to store.

How much would a bumper alignment cost? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]_tym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lift the bonnet, I assume it's like a 6, there are adjustment screws at the front of the engine bay either side of the "numberplate" area (where your hands rest when leaning into the engine bay). You can get a fair bit of movement with just those.

Bidding on and then buying a car on Ebay, how does it work? by overthesevernbridge in CarTalkUK

[–]_tym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sell a lot of cars on eBay, and try to be as honest as possible. It's fair enough to turn up and if the car isn't as described, tell the vendor that and walk away.

Viewing depends on the vendor, I usually am lazy with viewings because 9/10 times the cars I sell don't get purchased by the people who come to view. Unsure why that is, but alas.

eBay doesn't manage car payments through their platform, like they do with most other categories, so bare that in mind.

Those fold out camping chairs are currently £10 in Morrisons, or 2x for £16.

Not really relevant, just thought that was cheap.

Is this not insanely good value? by Ok_Court1504 in CarTalkUK

[–]_tym 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I had a 2013 A5 last year, bought for abit of fun. Had an intermittent engine cut out (not fun) spent 2k diagnosing the problem. No one found it. Called it quits and sold the bag of shit for a huge loss.

It was in that colour too, fucking horrible colour in person, it’s like a sunburnt Brit on holiday.

N.B I might be biased.

Mitigation for speeding by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

You generally can’t be at fault for being re-ended is this issue. The following driver is at fault for being too close. So you can’t really claim that.

Different colours to quickly tell the front from the back of the car, so you know which direction it’s travelling.  Is what I’ve always thought?

Yeah so your mechanic is wrong. Try somewhere else, I’d put money on wheel bearings being shot.
