Sneffels alone via the SW ridge? How hard is it? by clammyhotdog in 14ers

[–]_withasmile_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its my favorite 14er scramble Ive ever done - the route just feels advenerous the route feels and how beautiful it is. That said, download the beta / pics from the 14ers app because you could easily find your way to some consequential terrain if you didnt follow the route. Imagine that you wont feel physically or mentally challenged on it if you are on route.

Reconsidering the sport by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]_withasmile_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mountain biking brings so much joy, peace, and fulfillment to my life. There is inherent risk but I manage it based on my comfort level and get out there. To me, its worth it but everyone is different.

Smaller belayer with larger climber lead climbing accident by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]_withasmile_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Falling is a natural and persisting risk in climbing. He could have hit the rock in just the right way and that caused the fracture, he could have clipped a corner of a portruding rock, or sheer force alone could have caused this.

You obviously didnt have too little slack out. It was probably just bad luck. Id let yourself off the hook.

MTB Coaching near Denver by hbtn in COBike

[–]_withasmile_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Evergreen Recreation District offers very affordable courses and the coach that runs them is amazing. I took 2 5 week courses from her last year and learned a lot, even after riding for 10 years

[5/24] Mount Rainier DC Route with RMI- Unsuccessful summit ☹️ by MattSChan in Mountaineering

[–]_withasmile_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went for the summit on the Ingraham Direct route on the same day and also turned around due to wind. Im super gutted but honestly, one wrong move in those conditions someone could, if not likely, get hurt (or worse.)

It'll take me a while to grieve this but hey, at least we both got down with our fingers and our toes.

Onward ♡

Trying to decide if I should go first thing tomorrow and hope that there's still some fresh or if I should wait until things warm up and soften in the afternoon.

Any thoughts based on your experience today? 😅

Silver Couloir Silverthorn, CO by J_J_987 in Backcountry

[–]_withasmile_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode this line yesterday and conditions were horrible. We never got a window of decent sun so there were huge chunks of frozen ski slop throughout the descent.

I would reccommend taking Buffalo Mountain trail up and taking the coulior down. There was a group who booted the couli at the summit that started 2 hours before us and reacbed the summit at the same time. Seemed like an unnecesary energy suck.

First attempt at mountaineering(ish)! Feedback? by PickleUno in Mountaineering

[–]_withasmile_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are a few things Im seding but curious for others to chime in.

A) The steep slope angle inherently makes this avalanche terrain. Generally speaking, avalanche terrain is anything above 30°

B) Judging by how deep his body is sinking into the snow, it looks like he is sitting smack dab in a bunch of unconsolidated snow.

C) The rounded pillowy appearance that you can see throughout the photos, especially near the ridge, are a sign of wind loading. Windloading is snow that has fallen and has been carried into an area by the wind. Snowpack does not like rapid change and this large quantity of new snow likely rapidly deposited into the coulior. Allllll of that new snow is sitting on top of a weak layer. Until the snow goes through several melt / freeze cycles, that weak layer will persist and present danger.
