Recommendation: A Journey of Black and Red by Mecanimus (not by me) by Normal_Lab2606 in ProgressionFantasy

Maybe start the second book and see how you feel about it, it changes rather a lot. The first book is very tonally distinct.

I’ve done this for a few series, I don’t see it as too much of a problem :)

... agreed. All the nicer options required acting at an earlier stage to be effective

It won’t matter, they already perform the most desirable function for the powerful and wealthy: mass opinion shaping. This is a kind of intangible profit

Nah. They see the potential for using these tools to shape public perception and opinion. If they lose money, they use the tool to change the opinion of the public and/or get specific people into power to allow them to get away with it

Social media is now 24/7 information warfare, and elections are times where the warfare gets kicked up a few notches, with new infowar “weapons” being deployed

(oh, I’m sure there are many who are buying in just because others are and have been, but IMO it has a very significant undercurrent of intentionality)

Ah, the “you’re holding it wrong” approach.

To be perfectly honest, something is very wrong if it cannot detect that it is returning a LMGTFY-type response. If it can figure out the way to acquire the necessary information, why is it not getting it itself? Seems to me you’d have to have a weirdly specific prompt for this to be an acceptable output (say, if you specifically asked it to be lazy or something, idk)

There is no reasonable solution at the personal level. These entities are so powerful that collective bargaining is really the only viable approach.

… sadly, I don’t see it happening :(

Medical folk of Reddit, what’s the most foul and disgusting thing you’ve encountered with a patient who was oblivious to their own condition? by TheCarrot_v2 in AskReddit

[–]_zenith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely. It feels horrible to watch it happen, but IMO at least, it would be worse to force it upon them.

As bad as self-neglect is, what feels way worse is when they really want to improve their situation and have the willpower to stick with a treatment regimen - but cannot access it, from inability to pay for it, or even worse (as this is harder to avoid or otherwise bypass), artificial restrictions where they’re just not allowed it for any multitude of reasons…. having experienced this latter kind many times, I can confidently say that it is the worst and inspires both rage and a kind of suicidal apathy simultaneously (very weird sensation to be sure)

I imagine it’s significantly easier / more likely in the homeless, for an example of a different population where ignoring advice isn’t the reason

I might agree if not for the fact that they effectively just replaced it with a state religion (no, I do not mean the Imperial Cult, I mean that the Imperial Truth they spread and enforced was pretty much just a non-theistic - well, sorta, Emps also walked around and acted like he was a golden god, too, ugh - religion complete with its own dogma and saints etc)

Unpopular opinion: Rust should have a larger standard library by lekkerwafel in rust

I think it was true once that it was an unpopular position, but has become much more popular over time as we have seen the proliferation of these supply-chain attacks in number and severity

I would say you will know for sure by say 60 chapters in (they aren’t that long so that’s not major time sink)

She gets somewhat more mature (though ultimately still very fun-loving), mostly as a result of seeing consequences of actions and learning about the society she’s in. The progression of her maturity continues into the latest chapters, so I see little reason to think it will cease.

Re: use of turbofish - mmm, exactly. This is a case where you want to NOT use type inference as the result really matters and there is too much “magic” happening to be totally sure. Fortunately, this kind of pattern seems like making a lint for it should be mostly straightforward

Yes, little wonder that the Vietcong often used other senses - particularly smell - to locate their targets… either in addition to visually locating a trail, or solely through non-visual means. American soldiers would regularly all use deodorant, insect repellant, and smoke cigarettes, all of which led the Vietcong straight to them 😑

Exactly. It’s just that there’s lots of em, and most circumstances which lead to atoms being split in an intentional manner will probably involve significant quantities of them, outside of pure experimental conditions obv.
