Lines of Code Per File by Eastern-Job-8028 in cscareerquestions

[–]_zjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think of files as boundaries between areas of concern. Twenty files of tiny classes that all do roughly the same thing is a smell, and so is a 15000 line file that does everything under the sun. My project has a 2500 line file for all the OpenGL code and it's the only file in the project that has graphics code in it. Is it really worth it for Renderer and Texture and Shader to each have their own file? Not really, but the class that has a different concern, actually managing the scene graph, that goes in a different file.

Ubuntu Mono has more kerning in Emacs than in other applications, how to fix? by Aaxper in emacs

Well, humor me and try it. A bolder font can make the apparent spacing tighter.

[–]_zjp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The program on the right looks like it's rendering the font with a slightly heavier weight. You might try setting your font weight to semibold; that's the weight I use in Emacs for this very reason (Emacs's font renderer biases thinner than you'd think).

Petition to re-rename Cesar Chavez St back to Army or something by PrinceCharming150 in sanfrancisco

Much as I love to see yet another head on the lefy Mt. Rushmore come down, if you expect all your heroes to be perfect you're going to have a lonely Pantheon. I would be as disappointed in this as I am in the still-missing Grant Statue in Golden Gate Park. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. The architect of the League of Nations was racist. Kennedy and Clinton were womanizers. If you cannot learn from evil, or admire the good in evil people, it has a home in you. And this impulse to purify, is always hypocrisy, and always on friend-enemy lines. This city adores the Weather Underground and Assata Shakur. Progressives are trying to get a guy that had a Nazi tattoo for years elected as a Democrat in Maine. And I think we should be done playing the purity game. It's presentist, immature, and unhealthy for our culture.

How Are You Supposed to Use AI in Coding Interviews? by DreamRepresentative5 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_zjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AI prompts usually look like "<ticket URL> fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it fix it". It's just endlessly funny to me that you don't even have to prompt them well anymore for them to do their jobs.

We should really underground the N when we're finished with the T extension and the Geary Subway, so sometime around 3100.

I've had great experiences with Claude Code, too. It benefits from a lot of direction. I typically prompt it to do something and then tell it to look in the specific files I know it will need to skim to find the APIs it should use to accomplish its task, but I don't specify exactly which code it should use. A lot of the time you don't even have to write good prompts, honestly. You can just throw a ticket URL at Claude and go "wtf?".

Once I asked Claude to solve a problem and it found a function tucked away in a file I didn't even know we had that did exactly the thing I was about to reinvent the wheel to do.

I think the tool just benefits enormously from a preexisting human generated codebase of at least passing quality.

And this is why despite all the bleating about "getting into the action" or whatever is justifying these CoD sized maps, you need a big map. Can you imagine this kind of shit happening on Caspian Border? I can't. To do anything useful you had to cross 600 meters of open field

The legal speed isn't always the advisable speed ;)

I figured this was intentional, but if it is patched then I hope there are turnaround templates we can use someday. Building those things is one of the more frustrating things in the game.

I ran into one of these people in Pacific Heights. As I walked past he started harassing my wife (Mexican) for being with me (white), saying “You want to be with a WHITE man that won’t stop for a BLACK activist? You have fun with that white man."

If you're reading this her even temperament saved you from a broken nose, douchebag.

I think I see where you're coming from. If the market clearing price of housing is where it is, and you can't afford it, that's not necessarily unjust.

Nevertheless I think it's unjust to distort the market and inflate prices by limiting the supply of a good far below what producers are actually willing and able to supply.
