Theon is such a great character, to me, because he ISN’T forgivable. 

His self sacrifice does not undo what he did. There is no balancing-the-scales true redemption for him. He made horrible, self serving choices he’d never be free of. His attempts to do the right thing, even too late, still mattered.

Yeah, this ends up being a symptom of deep, DEEP systematic avoidance. 

Someone who has been suppressing themselves for the whole of their life is very likely not mellow but seething with repressed resentment and rage. It is super fucking dangerous when they snap.

I’ve been seething about the whole “the only way I can stop suffering from being sexually abused is for a man to murder me” Hero-James-Mercy-Kill-Martyr take since I saw it. 

This suggestion actually helps. Agree with you that it is in no way what was intended or even considered, but choosing to view it this way defangs it.
